View Full Version : FFXI Spin off?

The question of FFXI going offline in the future has been raised a few times, and the chances of another full blown expansion is looking less likely these days. PS2 limitations, fewer players, less income etc.
But there are people who have never played FFXI, and a spin-off could be the answer. Weather it be based on a serious of offline missions and quest or an all new story set on one of the unexplored continents like The Far Western continent. While adding some mystery that can only be found out playing FFXI online (to encourage new players to go online).
Systems to do these on and retain some of the graphical look clearly be Xbox 360 and PC (they wouldn't consider going it on PS2 now), but I'd love a FFXI spin off on the 3DS as well (lol I'd love to play ffxi online on that full stop).
For FFXI players linking the spin-off to you SE Acount could then allow you to use your main character and get all the benefits and allow you to move new items/gears between games.
Just an idea...

Ooo, that could be a great advertisement for the game! Yeah, good idea! *thumbs up

An offline version of FFXI pretty much? Man, if only this was true about a week ago. I wouldn't have finished FF9 in this time off.
In all seriousness though -
As great a marketing tactic as that would be, if anything it should be a spin off for FFXIV since lets face it - it's a sinking ship, and it is SE's new "big thing". I don't think SE is trying to hold onto FFXI in the long term as such, I believe they are trying to keep it afloat while they fix the problems in 14 so they can get their new income.
So great suggestion but I doubt it's realistic. :)

An FFXI spin-off with the misadventures of Gilgamesh and Joachim? They move into the city and rent a small apartment, but little do they know that they have to cross-dress to get a job? Oh those guys get me every time. :)

There is one major problem I see with this. If you make a side-game which is entirely offline and uses your online character data (which transfers between both games) then character data would have to become client-side. This means it would be very easy for people to alter their own character data (hacking, w/e you want to call it) giving themselves whatever they want.
The only way around this would be to make it an entirely separate game, or require the player to be online while playing it.

Just download FF1 on your iPhone. You won't be bored for at least a couple of days while you wait. These withdrawl symptoms are messing with lots of heads at the moment!

Ha, that's a good point, I started playing that recently, and feel right at home coming from XI. The controls are the same, the feeling of exploration is there, and monsters freely walkaround and seamlessly translate into battles. If you've got a PS2, and haven't checked this one out, it should tide you over till XI comes back online :)

In all seriousness, FFIII is supposed to drop on the app store any day now for iPhone/iPad, and it's an enhanced port of the remake for the DS from a few years ago. It's my second favorite single player FF game next to IX, and from what I understand XI was directly inspired by it. It offers a lot in terms of custom jobs/battle tactics, and is a must play. ^^

Pretty sure bringing up ffxii, then in a follow-up post, mocking it, knowing full well that there are people who will adamantly disagree with that, is trolling. Guess I'm a troll for calling out a troll.

He wants to know if you mean the North America Final Fantasy 3 (which is actually Final Fantasy XI) or the actual Final Fantasy III (that was released only on the DS in North America a few years ago).

Reading the posts we can all but dream. SE's way of doing things its not impossible for something to happen. (however they achieve it) FFIV: After years and Advent Children for example. I guess we will have to get our FFXI spin-offs and side stories else where. Maybe just make a new offline story in a new place/time to explore and follow my idea of keeping some mystery open for the gamer to come to FFXI Online.
And one can be forgiven if they thought FFXIV was the spin-off when they showed the first ever screenshots.
I'm lol'ing at some of the replies.
