View Full Version : Why complain?

What I am about to mention just haunts me at times. I don't understand it, and I hope someone can shed some light on the matter.
Why is it that I can not go a day playing FF without seeing someone complain about SE? FF is a retreat from the real world for me. It's a great way for me to relax at home after my family is asleep and I'm able to jump into a virtual realm to escape real life matters.
Such an example is something like "I didn't get the drop I wanted. The drop rate is too low. THANKS SE. I HATE THIS GAME.". Seriously? This guy is constantly complaining about things like this, yet he still PAYS for the service? You know, if someone just quit because of this, that's more rational. However people will continue to play day after day, just to complain.
Call me old fashioned, but a game is intended to be fun. It's just that I get such a huge drag from seeing so many players that complain on a regular basis. I enjoy the challenge and hard-work that goes into obtaining something that you want, even if that challenge is monotonous and requires a large amount of effort. I totally understand getting frustrated, I'm 0/100+ on both Leaping Lizzy and the Valkurm Emperor, but this seems like a different matter alltogether.
TL;DR
Play and have fun, or GTFO.

as much as I do agree with you I don't think it is a good thing to make threads to discuss people's behavior in the forum... you are calling for a troll thread.

Human nature.
People can be unemployed for years begging for a job, they get one then a month in they start complaining about the hours, no pay increases etc.
No matter what they do people will find something to complain about, case in point "abyssea is too easy".

Guess if it was a consistent rate, it might be different. But when you can be passing through and the NM is up and happen to claim it before the guy that's been camping it all weekend and you go 1/1 on it....it's just adding insult to injury I guess.
1/1 Leaping boots
1/1 Mary's horn
1/ who knows how many times I killed VE... but I got that @#$@#$ hairpin eventually.
I think what is REALLY frustrating is when they went and made R/E versions of the items everyone was fighting over, they didn't tweak the drop rate. PCA, VE Hairpin, and leaping boots are good examples. You can't sell them in the AH, so why are they such a low drop rate? It's bad enough getting the NM to spawn. There are some other items that drop 100%, and some that seem to be 1% or less at times. It's just out of whack.

Why open threads that will most likely lead to complaining?
Why bother posting replies in a thread where someone is wanting to have a legitimate discussion? There are going to be complaints in a majority of the threads in this forum. I don't want any hostility, why is this so hard to grasp?
Komori

Was that hostile? I was just saying, there's always going to be a few gripes here and there. But you can slightly glance at it most the time; and skip over it if it is.
But complaining about complaining doesn't seem to stop the complaining.
And if you've ever said "Damn, why can't this **** be changed, or this **** drop", you've complained about the way SE does things. You just haven't said it directly.

Didn't mean to single you out there. You can only pick up so much emotion from text ya know, lol.
I've complained about things yes, and I've wished that drop rates for things were higher, but at the same time I know that intricacies in the game are set for a reason. I'm not the developer of the game, if I was it would be really hard to have fun at it in my opinion. SE made this game, so they have deemed what is necessary and what is not. I respect the way things are set, so that's how I'm going to play it. What bothers me is the constant complaining about how SE screws up here or screws up there. Sure everyone is entitled to an opinion, but when the griping is bringing down my personal gaming experience it's kind of upsetting.

I don't like people who constantly complain either. I play the game for fun, not for accoplishment also like you seem to. And I understand exactly what your saying.
The abyssean threads about "OMFG, LEVEL REQUIREMENT TOO LOW. OLD STUFF DEAD" totally wrecks my nerves because the option is still there and all of them are too lazy to shout for parties. Or maybe they should make them happy by completely nerfing the EXP gained in abyssea altogether. <3
Doesn't really bother me much I only played FFXI once or twice a week at most because I already did everything there is to do for the most part. Got full AF3+2 set for my Paladin, upgraded my Excalibur with trails. Beat WotG missions. The only job I really cared about was PLD. Been playing other MMOs now too.
If SE decides to not bring back FFXI I would be totally fine with it since I already accomplished everything I pretty much could do it.

I'll agree that FFXI is full of complaining. These forums are a prime example. 90% of the posts I have read are of people whinging about the servers being down - or finding something else to whinge about of course. I think that just goes through to their game attitude as well.
It can be a very negative place in-game. Lots of arrogent people that think they know how to kiss god on the butt, however if you don't like that mentality I would just distance yourself from the players that you know have a very negative outlook on it.
I believe that the whole game is about gear-grabbing essentially. Why do we level a certain job? To go kill stuff and get cool gear for it. Why do we need cool gear for it? So we can go kill more stuff and get more cool gear. When people don't get the gear they are going for - they blame SE for not making drop rates 100%.
It's a terrible circle, and one that a lot of people are stuck in. So they whinge about it.

I would not mind that actually but my issue with abyssea and exp gain is this.
Before tit was possible to make 1 hr pt and everyone is satisfied, now in abyssea you need to do this slow build of exp chain.
to make it worth going there usually means 2 hrs min your usually expected to be more about 5 hrs.
I don't like that.
Point in saying is this, when you say nerf exp gain does it mean slowing the build? because that is what i would not like, if you mean lowering cap per mob like now its 610 lower maybe 400 then maybe it is managable.
I do not think the answer is nerfing exp gain in abyssea since human natuare don't like to be giving something then have it be taken away ( min entry 30 now make it 75)
If abyssea was 75 to begin with no one would be talking about such things.

Some people just like to complain, it sucks but it is a fact of life. But thankfully, this forum, like the games we play have an ignore function, if you don't like what they say, don't feed them ammo to fire back with, put them on ignore then you never have to see it.

Nerf the cap down to 400 and make the building sequence even slower! Then people would only go into abyssea for gear; and it would be more endgame!
Then people wouldn't go there to leech and people wouldn't worry about the old areas no longer being unoccupied and we can all fight for camps again.
Or we could all just play how we wanted to and not worry about the rest and people who want to play in older areas could just shout in Port Jeuno to create parties.

I think he was just trying to ask question and say people should enjoy the game more then complaining so much.
I can understand for such a concern since I am guilty of complaining but sometimes it is necessary evil sort of speak.
like hoping for change, be nice to have more room for gear so it dont take so long to job change.
some basic things like that should be understandable.
Plus he might not understand why some people compain about some issues. I know it can be confusing to see someone compain about every aspect about the game and still play.
I can understand for such a consern since I am guilty of compaining but sometimes it is nessery evil sort of speak.

sometimes it is to vent bad luck like I said on page 1.
I think Komori was making a statment they don't mean. I was only trying to explain to them what I can personally handle if some nerf was done to abyssea.

I wasn't referring to this poster in particular. It's in a ton of threads.
Personally, I think why some, not all people, are getting mad about the complainers is that they themselves are anxious about when the servers will come up. So, they are in the forum trying to get a fix for the FFXI addiction without thinking about their own impatience and addiction. Then someone makes a post about when they will get their FFXI fix. And, it reminds them that they need a fix, which they are trying to not think about. And, what do they do? They take that energy/anxiety and shoot it at the other person.
It's not what happens every time. But, I think we are seeing a lot of it.

no doubt u speak of the BCNM's, however, they CAN be sold is the point, except you obtain them a different way, and actually what they did with that was stupid. Cuz Leaping Lizzy you have to wait for. U can do BCNM infinite number of times, and have the mob u need instantly everytime. The BCNM should be the nontradable ones, you can spam that, Leaping Lizzy you have to wait till you eventually fall asleep and some other ass runs by and pwns it while ur sitting there drooling on your keyboard cuz u been sittin there for 3 DAYS!!!! Players of Final Fantasy XI either have to take the game as it is and role with it. Like most people who complain about life and go on living. Why, what is it that keeps 'em going? If you can answer this, then my friend, your troubles isn't that great.
I'm fine, I haven't logged into the world of Vana diel for over a month before the tragedy in Japan. I so with I can depart the life of fantasy and face reality, maybe help those suffering families who have it worse. As if tragedies aren't bad enough, in Japan (I fear) has many people missing. Most of our tech, games and business comes from Japan. If this thread is about people who complain then is should warn them about who has the right to complain.

Put simply, just because something might not be a problem for one person doesn't mean it's not a problem for another. I consider a subscription into FFXI an investment in its evolution. It's not so much, a "My way or the highway!" as I don't believe in the whole, "If you don't like it, quit!" mentality since it just shows a complete lack of faith in the devs. And if everyone did that, the money would go poof. You then put the remaining players in the situation where if expenses aren't covered by subs, SE either does something desperate to try to win people back or just closes up shop. Given how MMOs rarely get a second chance from people, the latter situation seems more likely to me.
Now, feedback isn't inherently bad. I find the troll threads and posts irksome, and while some might want to pull their hair out at the thoughts others express, they'd rather throw a tantrum instead of trying to politely correct a wrong. At minimum, we should probably note that of all ideas posted here, they will need to be translated. I also suspect whoever handles that further picks a perception of the good from the bad. The more verbose and complicated you make something (Like the Gym idea), the less likely it's going to be conveyed. The downside of this is since the FFXI community can be rather stubborn in their views, you almost need to go into long spiels to help justify something.

I'm not searching for trolls or complaining per say. I just want to know why it seems hard for some people to enjoy the game. Over the last couple of days I've contemplated that a lot of people get so overly emerged in the game that they let it consume them. Feeling angry and something going wrong in the real world you blame a higher power. In FFXI the higher power is SE, so perhaps it's a cry out to "God" to satiate their own frustration.
Honestly, I'm the last person in the world that wants to deal with drama. I'm not gonna be one who starts it. Thanks those of you who actually read the post and commented without any condescending demeanor, I appreciate that.

Because MMO players are ingrates. I had a former F2P MMO where the devs listened to the player base, and gave them exactly what they wanted back/upgraded, and lo and behold, OMG THIS CLAS IS OVERPOWERED, THESE GUYS ARE LEECHING NOOBS, ONLY THE BEST PLAYERS CAN BEAT US AT THE THING WE WANTED SO BADLY QQQQ. (All bs fallacious argument to be exact.) The update gave them exactly what they wanted, ad still they scorn the company... players are naturally whiners.
