Hey everyone. I was thinking the other day when logging into FFXI. This playonline viewer really isnt necessary for us to have anymore so why do we still have to access it to play FFXI? I think square enix should create a simpler log in screen, similar to the one they have for FFXIV where you put in your square enix account information and click play and then bam youre in the game. The whole going through all the menus for playonline login, then square enix password then clicking final fantasy XI then selecting your character, its very tedious doing this over and over each time you want to play. Im sure it wouldnt be hard for square enix to implement a simpler login screen for us to access final fantasy XI. Just more of a convienience to the players out there. Let me know what you all think of this idea. :)

Because the game simply doesn't work without it. Apparently, SE never considered that FFXI might outlive POL's usefulness or that XI would be a success and POL an abject failure. They didn't give themselves a way to divorce the two. They didn't seem to be very forward-thinking when they launched FFXI and it's hurt them in different ways.
POL does still serve a purpose in the management of one's friends list and messages. I almost forgot about that. It would be nice though if they could at least streamline POL down to the bare necessities and get us to the log-in screen faster. It's not just that it's a few clicks to get to where we want to go, but the interface is slow and clunky. It's just not a very welcoming welcome experience, which is ironic because that's what it was supposed to be in part.

Not really, POL was used for Walkthrough related stuff and a portal for SE's games, but you're likely not from Japan so you never really understood POL's purpose even during XI's prime years.

Nice whiteknighting there!
It was only for Front Mission online and Tetra Master.
SE always used and posted guide and tribune articles on PoL website as well...

Fantasy Earth, Everquest II, Dirge of Cerberus, and JongHoLo also were on the Japanese version of PlayOnline, which meant seven games at one point used it in Japan.
You are actually validating her point. Most people outside of Japan didn't have access to most of these games through PlayOnline. Everquest II outside Japan uses Station. Fantasy Earth didn't get localized to North America until after they began to discontinue PlayOnline services. Dirge of Cerberus had online multiplayer removed before the North American and European releases. JongHoLo was never released outside of Japan.

How condescending. Yes I'm not from Japan, but I do understand what it was meant to be. A game portal, a welcome screen, a friends list manager, a chat room, a messaging system, a help and support resource, an account management system, a community support tool, etc. Did you miss where I said "in part" even though you quoted it?
I swear if I posted that the sky in Abyssea is red someone would have a beef with me over it. Welcome to the internet!

ITS MAROON!

I was under the impression that pol was what supported the cross platform emulation required to well play on multi platforms... not that there aren't better ways to accomplish that though.

they do still need POL for FFXI, however they could turn it into a straight launcher that goes right to FFXI from the login screen and put the update option as something that happens when you start POL rather than waiting till you log in(like FFXIV), given the spaghetti code throughout POL and FFXI however, this might prove to be a difficult task, that is probably why they leave it as is

All I'd want is this.

It would streamline the log-in process to be on the same level with all other modern MMOs, but also still allow you to faff about within the Viewer to manage friends list/e-mail if need be.
If the Japanese still have more than one game for POL, make it a drop-down selection list for them rather than a checkmark box like I shopped in there.

They won't do that simply because you won't get to see the notices and warnings screens POL viewer pops when it loads the game page. Also, it won't show you that "don't forget your work, family and friends" banner, no ?
FUNNY ENOUGH, FFXI does have graphics on it's data for standalone login screen (within the title screen) and graphics for a standalone update, again at the title screen... :)

I honestly took that as a joke the 1st time around, was funny. After that, became nothing more than an annoyance, not like people actually read the thing every time they log in, I mean its only been the same for years.

You sure that wasn't legacy data for the 'first time running' POL screens?

Add it to the "By clicking Accept you agree to ToS bla bla bla" menu prompt when FFXI starts up, prior to the main menu.
By clicking accept you agree to the ToS, and that you'll never forget your friends and family while exploring the thrilling world of Vana'diel

I am. It was never used anywhere, yet it's there. You can see it for yourself with a certain "viewer" utility which goes by the name of a Goddess or so the legend say ...

they could just put "by clicking Connect you agree to the ToS set forth for this game" and add whatever else they feel they need to jazz it up
