View Full Version : [dev100x] An idea for adding to the auto-translator.

It was recently stated that "PS2 Limitations" were the reason for not expanding this very useful tool (which has also helped me meet some wonderful people in countries such as Japan that I could not otherwise communicate with). So I looked through the auto-translator a bit and came up with a minor solution to the problem (although it's only temporary).

There are semi-repeats in the auto-translator that maybe could be simplified. For example "Can you speak..." has the question being asked about Japanese, English, German, and French. However, English, German and French are all their own words in the translator as well. Could you not replace each of the separate questions with 1 - "What language do you speak?"

Then there's the various Dynamis zones. We all know, for example, that Dynamis - Bastok is in Bastok Mines. So instead of having a separate translation for each Dynamis, why not make "Dynamis" as 1 translated word and then we can use the individual zone names with it to make the point to whomever about the zone we are talking about. So instead of "<Dynamis - Valkurm>", we would have to put "<Dynamis> <Valkurm Dunes>". This should free up 9 slots by itself which would then allow you to add "<Abyssea>" to the Auto-Translator.

Then, of course, we have the Shadowreign Era zones. So we have, in the auto-translator, <Batallia Downs> and <Batallia Downs [S]>. Is there any way to create a translation for "[S]" and then we put in "<Batallia Downs> <[S]>" into the auto-translate to get our point across? That should free up even more and would then also cover the zones in the past that aren't even in the Auto-Translator. For Grauberg, Vunkerl Inlet, and Fort Karugo-Narugo, just add them as their own terms since we need to be able to say "<Abyssea> <Vunkerl Inlet>" anyway.

I'll do 1 more that I found (and there might be more) that can be simplified possibly as a space saver. Windurst, Bastok, Jeuno, etc. are all in the auto-translator already, so why do we need a separate auto-translation for "Windurst Residential Area", "Bastok Residential Area", etc.? Why not just make "Residential Area" 1 auto-translation and let the cities be used for the 2nd part?

I understand the game was designed with the PS2 in mind and while some believe it is holding things back, I think to just outright end support of it would lose you many fans. So I wanted to try and help with perhaps easing the idea of PS2 limitations. I know that while it is true, systems have limitations in programming, there are typically ways to get around them. For example, in high school I took a class for programming in the BASIC Language. We had to come up with a program that would list the first 25 prime numbers. Well, for bonus points, we needed to figure out a program to display the first 100 or more. The PCs at the time could not normally display numbers beyond a specific number of digits, so I had to use a programming trick in order to force the numbers to display properly (converting an integer into a string instead is how I believe I had to do it). Now I'm almost sure it's not as simple with programming today, but I would assume the same principle idea may apply and hope you would continue to show creativity in coming up with ways for us to continue to enjoy this awesome game on whatever system we so choose.

Agreed.

There are probably a lot of other auto-translates that are very rarely (or never) used. SE should pluck some out and replace them with something useful.

iirc they said not long ago they can't add any more to Auto Translate due to PS2 or something like that :s

that's because the current auto-translator is "full". They could replace some of the current entries with new ones, which is what OP is suggesting.

Here's another one - the resist job traits. Slow, Gravity, Charm, etc. are all in the translator already, so why not create just a <Resist> translation and we can combine the two for the rest. It would cut out even more to start adding new spells, abilities and traits to the auto-translator. I'm not sure with all of these if enough slots would be open to cover everything, but I'm sure I'm missing some of them.

Was hoping this got a bit more attention from people since a lot of people in the past have posted how upset they've been this system hasn't had any additions in over a year now.

PS2 Limitation!

Realy though, we need more auto-translate.

inb4 drop ps2 support

I'm well aware that's their response, but I'm giving an idea to get around that limitation for now and perhaps give them more time to come up with a better, more permanent solution. This new development team seems to be pretty creative.

They tweeted that they were already working on this and doing the exact thing that you are suggesting I believe.

True, but I was hoping I could help them a little bit with some suggestions in case this isn't a top priority for them.

Here's a few more - East Sarutabaruta, West Sarutabaruta, East Ronfaure, West Ronfaure, Eastern Altepa Desert and Western Altepa Desert - could we not just simplify this with the <East> and <West> auto-translator terms and then make 1 Sarutabaruta, 1 Ronfaure, and 1 Altepa Desert? Heck, we also have <North> and <South> in there, so just decrease the 2 Gustabergs to 1 <Gustaberg>.

Could we please, for the love of god, get "Would you like to alternate?" or "Would your party like to take turns with mine?".

I think we can generally agree this would be very useful inside Abyssea, and perhaps outside in some places.

They should drop PS2 support.

For the love of god, does this really have to come up again? I play on PC, but am totally sick of people flaming on about PS2 support.

Drop the topic and post it in a thread where those of us who are sick of that conversation can avoid.

When was I "flaming" PS2 support? I merely suggested they should drop it.

Agreed, dropping PS2 support is something I've expected SE to do for a long time.

Then you ignored my original intent for my post because I believe they've stated they aren't going to do so. I'm fairly sure they can adjust the programming or manipulate it in many ways to get around the "PS2 Limitations" issues for game play. THAT is the intent of this thread. If you want to discuss the merits for discontinuing PS2 support, there's at least 2 other threads to discuss that in already.

That all said, do you have a criticism of my ideas?

No, I think your ideas are great. That doesn't change the fact that my idea of dropping PS2 support would overall be a healthier option.

Someone else made a thread about this and figured they'd missed it way down at the bottom, so I'm bumping it up again. I do communicate with Japanese players, so the addition of more up to date terms will help out a lot.
