Like a fricken minimap on the compass so i dont have to /map every 2 seconds, duh, this should have been in the game since day 1. And everyone knows autorun and /map just dont work, the game just always finds a way for u to get stuck ona small pebble, or a bush, or a tree or a freeeeking something, when ur /mapping, or just look away for one second. Can it be possible to allow our characters to traverse through or over annoying objects like this for the love of god. Its like Autorun has an "Auto Get Stuck" on crap feature connected to it.

I think we all have experienced this and yet, your post makes me LOL.
But a live mini map would rock so hard.

The slight pull to the right when running straight bugs me more than getting stuck on little things. :(

This! At first I thought my character or chocobo were drunk or something. Why can't they run straight?! xD

It's only if the camera is too high or too low. Camera centered behind you will allow you to run straight.
Also, a minimap would be very much appreciated. They did it in XIV too, and it's very useful.

This would be nice, and it would be even better if it showed terrain and obstacles, as the outlines on the map screen maps wouldn't be too helpful if they were zoomed in too far.

I like this idea because I had had the same problem with running into random trees that happen to jump out in front of me. Even when I know I should hit anything, I still do...
Or if that isn't an option maybe the ability of seeing your red dot move (instead of staying at the point you were at when you opened it) while /map is open will be helpful in preventing from running into things and to far past a point. And making the maps a bit more detailed, because there have been times when I ran into a cliff wall that wasn't represented in the map.

Easiest way to see this in action is stand at, say, right outside the mog house area right when it opens to the outside, line yourself up to the exit to Saur, then try auto-running straight to the exit. You might wind up down in the AH area or snagged against the Airship exit to Windy.

This doesnt even help genius. The map on the wiki doesnt stream your position on the map, so your STILL forced to check your exact position with /map, then peer at the wiki map to compare your position with wherever it is you're trying to go. This doesnt really help.

If you have crap cluttering up your screen then you obviously have a craptacular computer, i have so much space on my screen with the resolution i use, it saddens me that there is barely anything on it. No possible way that a detailed mini version of the map that streams your position would take up anymore room than the already piece of crap mini see through compass with transparent blue or purple lines and red dots for enemies. <------- this is where u put it, replace that dum see through compass garbage

WTF is so ps2 limitation about this. Almost every PS2 game has a streaming minimap for your character, its not streaming from the internet, but its there. I dont even understand this stupid limitation crap, the game hasnt even used 50 percent of the HD on a PS2, so why is it so hard to fit it on there?

They already said it can't be done. It's not a matter of "Well the N64 could do it why can't FFXI?" There is some facet of the game's design, its architecture, its connection and communication with the servers, or some other technical aspect of the game that prevents them from implementing this feature.
That is all there is to it. It is not "Too advanced for ffxi", nor is it "too much work". It simply can't be done based on the way the game is already set up.

Third party tools SE is very strict on that policy the banwagon a coming. On a serious note if SE don't have time for stuff like that player's who can be able to summit it to SE if they like it and make sure it legit would allow it to be use and post an offical you can use this program. But I can alrdy here the foul play from console users lol

LOLOLOL except it isnt. A map streaming my position is not against any rules. But a botting program sure is. Look at WoW, thousands of Addons to use, hell they got a program that tells you the name of the equipment, where it drops, and who drops it and thats not against the rules over there at blizzard, and if u ask me, thats pure cheating. They got map addons that show every position on the map that has a harvestable crafting node (mining, herbalism, blah blah) and thats not considered against the rules.
Your perception of whats against the rules must have failed the day you read the words "Third Party Program" in the large paragraph talking about the use of them and being banned.
Third party programs are ok when it doesnt ENHANCE or give you an advantage while playing. And WoW is a tough example because they have so many addons that actually do enhance or give you an unfair advantage in so many ways its disgusting they allow it to be used.

ITT: Blizzard and Square Enix must have identical rules surrounding the use of Third Party Programs.
Seriously, get over it. I'm not mentioning anything. If you pay attention to the other responses on this page, you can use Google and find everything you need.

I think you're a critical part of the "except it is". This isn't Blizzard. It's Square Enix. All third party programs are against the ToA/ToS and people have been banned for them.
Edit: If you think that's stupid, that's fine but don't attack other people for stating the truth of the matter. That's stupid.

Well bravo SE, your officially retarded for banning people for using stuff that HELPS the game, and not makes the game give the player an unfair advantage over gameplay.
Thats the major difference. If we cant use ANYTHING, thats just stupid, cuz instead of us crying for things to change, we can just go and implement the change in a 3rd party program and everyone would just shut up. Bravo SE, FAILURE

While agree this should have been implemented from the very start, it either can't be (like someone said a page back or so) or won't be for whatever reason. Also, while I agree with Mordanthos that having a third party program that streams your position on a mini-map wouldn't really give anyone an unfair advantage, sadly all of the programs that I am aware of offer more than just that. For example showing all mobs (alive & dead), npcs, ???'s ect.. on the map, combined with ability to filter out the items you do not want to see does give an unfair advantage.
And by definition, ANYTHING that is added to the game that is not packaged with the release or added via an update would be considered third party unless SE themselves release it for use. Even if it is something that SE wishes they could implement themselves.

too stupid to type /map and check out where you are?
sry you don't belong in this game then.

Unfortunately, you just kinda proved the point for SE. While using a 3rd party app to give you a minimap doesn't direclty alter the game, it does enhance YOUR particular gameplay and not anyone elses. By that simple definition, it alters the gameplay as a whole, no matter how insignificant the difference may be, it allows your client a feature that directly enhances YOUR gameplay, and it is something that is platform specific (only available on PC now).
But, more importantly... one of the more popular apps out there is contraband because of this:
all of the programs that I am aware of offer more than just that. For example showing all mobs (alive & dead), npcs, ???'s ect.. on the map, combined with ability to filter out the items you do not want to see does give an unfair advantage.
As for implementaion of the mini-map by SE...think it had to do with the different texture layers or something. The overlay is using "normal" D3D implementation (why 3rd party apps are able to render to it), while the game itself is rendered to off-screen texture and displayed differently and would require almost a complete rework of the engine to add it. To do it the way the 3rd party apps are doing it (rendering to the foreground layer) might expose them to more exploits or something (maybe another pos or claim hack), who knows why they won't do it... but they have their reasons.

Clutter is somewhat of an issue on the PS2, but all that is needed to address this is an option tot urn the map graphic on or off.
But the compass radar already obscures your view as it is, so adding the map as a backdrop doesn't really make things worse.
I fully support this idea, and let it be known to all you people who say I'm a pessimist or disagree with everything.

If you are persistent enough, a way would be found. It would most likely just take more work than they're willing to put in, and/or the original people who designed certain parts of the program are no longer on the staff.
