I must say that from what I have seen FFIX is one of the few MMOs where most of the "old" content is still somewhat relevant (to an extent). With that being said, even considering that all of the content is still somewhat relevant, very few people are willing to go back and do much of the old content unless absolutely necessary...regardless of what the rewards are. It truly is a shame that some of the best gear, as well as the best story lines comes from stuff that no one wants to do themselves, or even help someone else with. There are also many things that come from the old content that are still highly relevant, but are difficult to obtain now that no one does the content for them anymore (Mythic WS for example)
So I propse the following in order to help bring the old content up to speed:
Implement a new system where the general idea behind it is that you recieve points for doing old content which can then be spent to buy AFv3 +1 seals; and AFv3 +2 Stones, Cards, Coins, and Jewels.
Let me explain:
Whenever you participate in a mission related BCNM, BCNMs and KSNMs requiring seals, kill HNMs or gods, do limbus, nyzul, assault, einherjar, salvage, successfully defend or recapture the astral candescence, and possibly do some things in campaign, you will recieve points that you can spend on the above mentioned AFv3 upgrade items.
Different things would reward a different amount of points. Consider the following examples:
BCNMs requiring seals would reward more points than doing a mission based BCNM. Similarly, level capped BCNMs would reward more points than uncapped BCNMs. Genbu, Suzaku, Byakko, and Seiryu would reward less points than Kirin. Kirin would be worth less points than say Absolute Virtue or Einherjar Odin.
The points spread could be something like this:
On the low end of the points spectrum would be things like BCNM 20s, early mission BCNM fights , assault, salvage, the 8 regular avatars (fenrir and diabolos being worth more than say Ifirt), and sky gods. Mid range would be things like nyzul, divine might, late mission BCNM fights (the last few fights to complete nation missions, COP, WotG, Zilart, ToAU), Proto-Ultima/Omega. And the high end of the spectrum would be things like Einherjar, The Wyrmking Descends, and the harder avatar fights (odin, alexander, carbuncle prime). Obviously this is just a generalization and the actual points values would vary between each activity regardless of where it is on the points scale.
So...The whole point of this?:
Get people back in to doing some of the old content and encourage people who have never done any of it to go back and do it. The idea here is to add incentive to the old content so that people are more willing to help others who are doing content that many others have already completed. It is also to add incentive for people to go and do stuff that they might never do simply because the rewards are not for LV 90s. For example: I am sure that people would be willing to help people with the Nyzul climb if they could get points from completing floors that they can then use to upgrade AFv3.
One argument against this that I can see is that people will say that it trivializes upgrading AFv3 pieces. This would not be the case. First off, upgrading to AFv3+1 is already rather trivial as many jobs can solo or duo NMs that drop seals, and anyone can solo most of the quests that give seals, not to mention you can get your seals for body and hands without even trying if you do enough dominion. Secondly, the items for +2 upgrades drop from NMs that are easy to low man, and in some cases are soloable. With that said many of the current ways to obtain these items are actually easier than a lot of the higher end old content.
Having said that generally the cost of the seals and the +2 items would be set at a reasonable price so that overall the points system would still take longer than if you were doing the current methods for obtaining these items. The overall idea being not to replace the current method but rather to add a new way to obtain these items while at the same time giving players and incentive to help others.
TL;DR: make old content give points (based on difficulty) that can be redeemed for AFv3 upgrade items. The intent being to give people an incentive to help others with older content, not to completely replace the current methods of obtaining upgrade items. As such it would still be faster to kill abyssea NMs but you can also slowly accumulate points from helping others with old content to supplement your progress on obtaining upgrade items.
