Using items on other people?

Not sure if I'm being incredibly dense here, but is it possible to use items on other people?

When my party is out levelling and we run low on HP or MP, whenever I try to use an item on them I end up using it on myself. I've tried every combination of targeting/using items I can think of, so I'm really just wondering if it's even possible.

If it is possible, does it only work with certain items? Does it work with temporary items? Most importantly, how do I do it?

I always found it strange that you could only use items, regular and temporary, on other people. It kind of upset me when I first started playing the game, because if I'm not mistaken, this is the only Final Fantasy game that doesn't allow you do do this(with a few exceptions, like Catholicons and the Powder/Mist items).

It's a very common constraint in MMOs. If they don't, they end with a situation where healer classes become useless (DD's can just cycle healing between one another, rendering dedicated healers as a wasted party slot) or items are so ineffective that it doesn't matter what they do.

I always thought they were going to save the ability to do targeted item usage for Chemist, but since we're not getting that job, I don't think it'll happen.

I still think it wouldn't be such a ridiculous idea, considering how frickin' expensive potions are and how little HP they actually heal. That being said, VW changes all of that, so I guess that's a pretty valid reason now, but I don't think it would have broken game balance in the past.

Now they just need to introduce Pheonix Downs, that can be used on other ppl!!
