I started playing in 2008 and never got very far, but am back due to nostalgia's sake. Of course, I'm a bit confused because I still kinda remember Dunes parties being the done thing, then Qufim on to Kazham.
So I did my first Gusgen party the other day, and was amazed at the speed of levelling. Now I'm wondering -- I heard that Crawler's Nest is the next place for me to head. What level should I be doing that? I just hit 30 WHM. What about after that?
And for the sake of discussion, where do you enjoy partying most these days? Where did you enjoy partying before? Were you like me and actually rather liked the Dunes? :)

Crawlers Nest parties normally take people in at 35, however 30 would probably be ok seeing as you are a healer for one, and also a potential level sync later on after you have leveled a few times.

Sounds good, thanks. :) I feel a bit awkward sitting in a Gusgen party at 30 because I feel like I should be experiencing more difficult content and learning, but I can probably stick around for another few levels before jumping over to Crawler's Nest (which I've never been to before -- 30 was my highest when I played before!).
Thanks again!

No problem, Crawlers lasts from 35 to 58, 58 is the highest level for a sync anyways, so it should last you for a fairly long time. :D

Even with this failed attempt at being funny he did bring something useful up. Since you're 30 you should go to Port Jeuno soon and talk to the NPC Joachim. You'll start the Abyssea content with him. He'll start stacking up all your Traverser Stones for you. Might not make much sense now but it'll help you out in the long haul.

It wasn't an attempt at anything, it's the truth.

Oh don't you worry kitten, difficult content and learning curve will awaits you at level 99. Seal farming, endgame events, voidwatch, dynamis, neo nyzul, all the older endgame contents, they will give you plenty of satisfaction on learning how to play your job and overcoming massive grind fest of gearing your characters. The game now is all about the fun at 99 and no longer focusing on the grind to get to 99. Enjoy the new FFXI where fun, accessibility and addictive contents awaits you. Frustration has been lowered to minimum fuss, travelling has been made easy as well.

Yeah, you would, if you had cruor to be the key bitch. New players don't.

And no, I'm not talking about RMT leeching either.

Isn't Crawler's Nest certain death at 35 unless you have 6+ people? The monsters at the entrance are incredibly tough to 35 if I'm not mistaken.
Anyway, for 30~34 solo, I do page 1 in Korroloka Tunnel (very easy solo). For 34~40 solo, I do Gigas and bats in Lower Delkfutt's Tower (need my adventuring fellow with most jobs until near the end). Then for 40~44 I do Hecteyes and Stirges in Ranguemont Pass (once again need fellow until near the end).
Once you're 44, you may be semi-decent for the entrance of Crawler's Nest. If not, Sea Serpent Grotto page 1 works for that level solo.
Grounds of Valor is 99% dead on Quetzalcoatl. The 3 areas that are sometimes occupied are Zeruhn Mines, Gusgen Mines, and Bostonieux Oubliette. Nowhere else ever has GoV groups when I check.

Crawlers nest was once and so far as I know still is popular on Phoenix, could be wrong however. In either case I assumed it would be much the same. Here 35 is starting level of entry for people in Crawlers nest. :x

I know it sounds strange, but some players actually like to be at least slightly useful while they exp too.
I could have leeched/keyed up all my jobs, I easily have the cruor/gil for it, but I think it's boring to key, and I don't like that afk leveling is even possible.

I never understand this mentality, as you then have to spend days skilling up your main skills to even be anywhere useful, and also have to learn your class. At least in page parties you are hitting things and using your spells, as a keyer, you are just increasing the gimped gap immensely. Even with food, it took 3 days (around 3-4 hours at a time) to go from dagger skill 50 to close to cap, and that was with food) while farming scrolls and my THF knife pop. Thats the same amount of time I could take 2 jobs to 99 in page parties, so it's functionally null if you don't already have your skills waaaaaay up there.

Skilling in GoV is slow & nearly impossible seeing as everything dies so fast & you only hit each mob 1~3 times, or at least thats my experience.

That's still infinitely more times than you hit a mob while on key duty

I paid my dues already and thus have earned teh right to burn. 2.) Skilling up is infinately easier after the fact. 3.) Burning a job has nothign to do what-so-ever with your ability to learn it or not.

Please not this discussion again. Just ignore him like everyone else does. Just don't start with this again. Let at least one thread go unpoisoned. (Or at least don't lie about it.)

While you are correct you can not say skilling up is really done much if at all. If you went 1~60 with GM & CN as your only 2 leveling areas, using GoV alone. Then you would probably hit a skill level of maybe half your cap at best in the end I think. Which is not all to great, it is better, but not good either.

You're right that you can't rely on it for skilling up everything to cap at any given level, but having leveled a few jobs to 75 with pages in for example bostanieux, I'd say that it is not unreasonable for your skill at 75 to be around the level it should be at 60-65.
Then again, my last job was samurai, and I was using a soboro in those parties, and the parties were usually just 5-8 people, not full alliances. Even if you don't attack VT+ mobs, once your skill starts lagging behind by a 30-50ish points, you'll see a lot of skillups roll in from fighting EP and DCs, so it usually won't lag behind much more than that.
Still though, a one handed weapon shouldn't be too different from that, considering they swing a lot faster than other two handed weapons. For magic skillups, i'm not going to comment. Those are probably a lot worse.

It's a game no one can win. There's just losers. And you initiated it. It's still better than the retarded EXP debate again, so I'm all for it.

Solo 1-10 in a nub zone, takes like an hour, do 10-30 in Bostaunieux Oubliette, takes 2-3 hours depending on the amount of scrubs in my way, then 30-99 in Abyssea over 2-3 days is how I lvl my jobs.

By level 30, you should have roughly 100 skill in <insert weapon here>. If you plan ahead and bring food / gear for skilling up, you can begin participating at 70 ish and have said weapon skill close enough to cap to not be a major hindrance by the time you hit 99. I just say "hey guys, who wants to take over keying? I'm gonna whack stuff with my <weapon> now.". Atmas can speed this process up considerably. Any deficient skills you have by 99 will typically be capped by the time you finish getting af/af2/af3 / magian weapons for said job, so that by the time it is ready for prime time events, all skills are suitably leveled.
This will obviously be harder if you are leveling your first character, because you won't have atmas etc. However, in the case of the OP, he can stand there and spam cures / enfeebles / enhancing magic as much as he wants, regardless of the leveling method and skill up completely naked if he wants. White mage is also a good choice for getting into pickup groups so you can get your atmas etc.
EDIT: Of course there are some jobs with multiple lame / rarely unused skills, or access to multiple weapon types. These jobs will require separate skill up sessions regardless of the method used to level the job.
