These have been in the game for almost 9 years and they have not one purpose. They're not used in any quest or synthesis recipe. Please give these a purpose. Please don't relegate these to the same fate as Nidhogg Scales which also had no purpose until SE made it used in a worthless synthesis recipe for a piece of furniture nobody cares about.
Some suggestions for Cactuar Needles:
- Some Needle Crossbow Bolts.
- Needle Arrows.
- A high level spiked mace or staff.
But if this idea is ever forwarded to the developers I bet they'll end up making Cactuar Needles used for a lame Jumbo Cactuar statue furniture piece. =(

Sorry for the delay in getting a response to your feedback!
We spoke with the team member in charge and they said that while there aren't currently any uses for it, they would like to look into using it as an ingredient in crafting or something along those lines. We can't get too specific at the moment, but the dev. team is keeping a look out for a good use for it in the future!

Um, why add something that has no use?

I think they are talking about giving something that currently has no use one.
1000* Needle Mace!
*May only contain 500 needles.

They wanted something for the Cactuar to drop, or they planned something then removed it/never added it.
This also applies to Papaka grass to an extent. It's stackable to 12 and listed under Alchemy, but it can't be used in recipes and is only used in 1 non-repeatable quest in Windurst. Yet it drops all the time off dhalmels and is pulled up very frequently in East Saru chocobo digging.

I think the ease and volume of Papaka Grass was a countermeasure to prevent people from killing all the dhalmels and price gouging the grass. SE wanted to be sure there wouldn't be congestion or price hije for obtaining a Chocobo when the game first came out.

My fear is that they're gonna turn cactuar needle synthesis into a lame furniture piece instead of something actually useful like affordable and decently strong ammunition(HIGHER LEVEL;MORE POTENT STATUS BOLTS! BRING BACK XBOW). Was disappointed that Nidhogg Scales were in the game for over 7 years until they gave them a use with that lame balance-scale furniture instead of some kind of badass body armor for Dragoon(cuz DRK/WAR/BST had Adaman Hauberk and Dragoon only had Assault Jerkin to TP in)

Someone that I played with a long time ago said they were a Sailor Moon reference.

I think they prevent agro from cardians if you hold their card in inventory, but they still link and react to attacks.

That's a really old rumor that has been disproved. It only persisted because most people never bothered trying to check it.

Not to mention inconvenient... carrying an entire deck of cards takes up a lot of space... and generally you wanted those buggers dead anyway.
Although I guess you could play cardgames with them if you could gather the whole set. Did anyone every try to collect the whole set? Poker Night at the Colliseum anyone? :D

Difficult to gather the set since the ace cards only drop in a non repeatable final BCNM Windy mission. I soloed it on THF at 99 and none of them dropped Ace cards.

Daimonic Casing
Cactuar Needles
Adaman Scales
These items have been in the game for YEARS and have no purpose. Please give them some use...

Hmm~ bit old a thread but yeah, this is dumb. Items without a use shouldn't exist, it's just torturing our inventories that already have limited room.

There are loads of items in the game that don't have a use right? They're there to add flavour.

Actually... almost every item in the game has a use and a purpose, even if its a one-off quest or another.
Still items without purpose I don't believe add any flavor to the game, dumping water in a cup of water doesn't add flavor to the water, you just got more water. Cactaur Needles could lend themselves to recipes in throwing weapons at the very least. Adaman Scales feel like they were added because every other Sheet recipe had scales, and SE just forgot to make a recipe for Adaman Scales, and Daimonic Casing... idk, It's rather unusual for them to add an item thats used in nothing that wasn't introduced eons ago.
Some useless items that were given a use involve Doll Gizmo and Nidhogg Scales.
Theres no reason for useless items to be useless. Items like Nidhogg Scales were probably seen as a trophy item back in early FFXI, a concept that was a little flawed, but items like Cactaur Needles and Adaman Scales are not trophy items, and therefor don't even serve that purpose. Also, 2 years ago SE mentioned wanting to make recipes for them lol... its like the second response. I guess they forgot

Inb4 Wyrm Blood is useless for the next 2 years. Somehow it would be cool if it was used for a future BCNM entry item like Monarch Orb for a Bahamut v3.
this goes back to a thread I posted awhile back. I wish that the devs would stop adding new crafting materials when there are already so many drops with zero use or very little.
Would be nice if more older items were used in newer recipes so that the economy could move again
