View Full Version : Ranged Attack for animators

Just a random thought, but I think it would be interesting if animators had a minor provoke effect when using it as a ranged attack. Enough to claim a mob if unclaimed, but not enough to keep it's attention for long if you remain out of range.

A better idea would be an ability to "provoke" a target.
The basic concept why puppetmasters don't have such an ability is that SE claimed that you'll use your automaton or just stay back and let other people in your party do the trick.
I for myself like the idea that you don't have to rely on your automaton, subjob or other party members to support your party (or soloplay). Maybe SE decides that it is time to get us something (animationwise) like frypan? *g*

Hate to say it but I doubt the devs will go for this. I can just hear them saying "if you want provoke on your pup, sub /war"

I don't have a problem with this idea, would be pretty neat giving PUP its own type of enmity+ JA. But you have to convince SE to actually make animators into some type of /ra first.

It already is considered a weapon, just without an attack animation or effect. You lose TP when (un)equipping an animator.

Just because the Animators are equipped in the /ra doesn't make them weapons. Is it subject to the rules of that gear slot? Yes, just like an instrument or a real weapon or fishing pole, you lose TP swapping it in or out of said slot. Again, the TP loss is a function of the slot, not what's put in the slot.
Still think the idea is neat.

Instruments, stat items and fishing rods do not lose TP.
It's not a function of the slot, it's a function of the item category being flagged as a weapon. It functions as an instrument, has ammo like a fishing rod, loses TP like a weapon, and is the smallest item category in the game.

Sorry, just getting back to this

Sorry, but you are flat wrong. I even went and bought a 1k horn to go check on my lvl 25 BRD.
Naked with just the horn, i ruffed up some rabbits in east ron. Took off horn and poof went the TP. Did it a few times and its not a fluke. Then to be thorough, i ran back to MH and swapped to SAM for meditate and grabbed my fishing pole. Ran that test outside MH, same result-TP was lost.
Now i didn't test TP loss from switching out the Ammo slot. There is no need there because i know from first hand experience on RNG and THF that you can swap ammo until the cows come home and never lose TP. As long as swapping ammo doesn't force a de-equiping of whats in the /ra slot of course(ex- You can swap all arrows with each other w/o losing TP. But suddenly swapping in bullets would cause a bow to de-equip, and all accumulated TP to be lost.)
So there you have it, you learned something today. And oddly enough, i still think your idea is kinda cool.

I'll have to test it myself, because that's not how I remember it when I posted something similar years ago. I'm not 100% sure about fishing rods, but instrument swapping does not cause TP loss. I have entire macro swaps around that for my low level bard. (Perhaps that is what I remember, only instrument > instrument not causing TP loss.)

Honestly, I still stand by it being absolutely ridiculous that we, for a long time, had higher throwing skill than hand to hand skill, yet could not even equip a throwing weapon because of our animator. Just put some dmg/delay on them and be done with it, it's not like the different animators have anything actually different about them, aside from how much dex they give, and that they're not animator +1, giving HP/MP.

Every melee brd set up created by anyone who's ever played bard disagrees with you.
