View Full Version : [Suggestion] Please expose player info to 3rd party apps.
I write applets for the G15/G19 keyboards as well as some other hardware and I would like to be able to write something like this mockup I've made:
http://i.imgur.com/e32he.jpg
I want to display things like the player's current jobs and levels, HP/MP, Position on the map, recast timers, etc. Basically anything they can access themselves via the command line in game. This way they can have more of a HUD than having to constantly Echo out recast timers etc. Also being able to see your <pos> without having to open the map would be huge in my opinion.
I thought I remembered there was going to be 3rd party support at some point but I think now that might have been for FFXIV. Any chance we could get an export of this data in XI? Even dumping it to a text file or something like that would be preferable to nothing at all.
Just a thought.

as far as I know use of third party tools is against tos. And yes that is in for ffxiv.. Infact you can report ppl using windower and the tools as well as sites that host them. Just came from the support site.
May want to not post about useage of tools ^^;;
Where in my post did I say I was using 3rd party tools?
The screenshot above is a mockup, not an actual program. The game wasn't even running when I took this picture. The data displayed are hard-coded strings compiled before the program even ran. The entire point of my initial post is that I want a way to display this information that isn't against the TOS...
To clarify, I am only asking that they consider providing some read-only (not writeable) information about the game for display purposes only. A keyboard applet isn't the only thing that could take advantage of this. Some real-time information about what is happening in-game isn't a dangerous thing.

Those keyboards are made for this information, FFXI is out of date not allowing it.
A massive difference to this which effects no gameplay whatsoever and what other third-party tools do...

I don't think it was about 3rd party support exactly, though it could be anything for all I know.
This is probably what you are thinking of?
User Customization Features
The window scheme and GUI scripts for FFXI will be released so users can design their own interface features.
What that really means, is yet to be seen...
I play around with a G15 myself (with Linux), and am very much interested indeed to see what it will be ! !! !
Why is your name so familiar to me!?
(No, not from the movie.)
Rosina,
You are correct, however this is not about that kind of stuff, as mentioned above. ^^;
In other words, it is to ask for the possibility of displaying the information from the game in a screen that is not the main display.
Exactly Dragoy. I was hoping for more information on this, or at least for one of the Mods here to plant a seed with the Developers to release this information.
Are you talking about the name Wint? I'm a moderator over at Zam.com, maybe if you are over there? Otherwise Keyser Soze is indeed from the Usual Suspects :D

Yeah, I as well would love an update on that, and everything else announced in the particular thread, but I think we need to wait some more!
As for the name, I mean the Keysersöze indeed, and I am sure it's not the movie why it's familiar to me...
Oh, OH! I remember now!
Someone on a certain Counter-Strike: Source server which I somewhat frequently visit uses that name as well.
Wow that almost bugged me slightly insane.
Even though I don't currently own the hardware, this would be pretty awesome. Also, not game breaking. I certainly wouldn't feel, as someone who doesn't own a G15 that someone who did would have any real advantage over me.
I'd also really REALLY love it if SE put some official apps out for XI - I'd totally spend 5 bucks on say a FFXI clock or something for my ipad (yes I could just look on a website, but a nice, well designed app would be ace) - other apps I'd love would be interactive maps, bestiary, spellbook and recipe book (could call it Shultz' stratagems lol) with some of the basic stuff like mob ecosystems etc in it. Maybe some new lore, or even just accumulated lore. An official quest and mission guide would also get my cash. Yes, there are third party websites like ffxicyclopedia that do this stuff, but they are getting out of date, and why should they make money off the game when SE could make a nicer, more complete, more functional and user friendly app and make cash from it?
Anyway sorry to get off topic, but I'd love to see the devs either make this sort of thing (the G15 app/ipad apps) available themselves or open it up for the fanbase to make.

I use a G19 Keyboard. To have that info on the LCD Display would be a Godsend, or even being able to port the map of the area to the LCD Screen would be helpful (Even though it would be pretty small)

Basically it's not so much about just G15s and such whatever keyboards that happen to have a display integrated to them.
Were this information available for use to create these LCD-applets, it would mean that other external applications would be able to use the data as well without them being 'cheats', since the information would be available (or OK to be used).
You could have a larger display than what keyboards usually do, and send the information there. There are lots of displays available that are intended for use in cars and such, which already tend to be quite a lot larger than those in keyboards. Basically the same thing as sending the information to another display, but to one that is not quite as large and not intended to be used as a main display of a computer.
Such would be able to display for example a map quite well.
Olor,
As one of those who edit the wikkis, I am sorry that they are quite a lot out of date nowadays. I mainly edit at the Gamer Escape nowadays, which obviously has even less users than FFXIclopedia does now, but in the end, it's all about man/woman power as well as motivation and time to make them up-to-date. ^^;
