Brand new player. I've figured out how to tell what status effects I have on me but how do I tell what I've cast on an enemy? Is it all through the combat log?

Also (I haven't partied yet as I'm just playing the jobs trying to figure out what I want to do) how do I tell status effects in a party? Both what people have cast on an enemy (so I don't cast the same) and what effects are on my party (if I'm playing WHM and I need to remove the effect).

I have tons of questions! I've played very briefly before but really want to give FFXI a good go this time.

I'm very undecided on a class to play but I think I may lean towards a jack of all trades or a support class, suggestions?

Thanks for the help! I'm trying to find all this info on my own through http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/

You can only view effects on yourself. Everything else is only recorded in the log, and only the person that inflicted the status effect and the person possessing the status effect are told when it wears off via the chat log. Certain TP moves by enemies won't say they've inflicted an effect, such as Doom, so your party members have to tell you.

OK, so let's say someone casts Dia. I'm not notified of the effect on the mob. So I cast Dia, does it stack or did I just waste some MP?

Excuse me if it's a silly question. OR maybe because of the party makeup, only one person will be in charge of that anyway?

If your Dia overwrites theirs, they lose the notification when the effect wears off because it isn't their effect anymore, it is yours, and you will get the notification of it wearing off. Dia is a bad example though, in that it does damage, it doesn't state they are enfeebled. Dia and Bio never miss though, as long as they do damage, so the effect applies, if only for 1 tic, unless it wiyld be overpowered by the current effect. Things like Blind will say they have blinded the enemy, or they had no effect. No effect usually means the enemy already has the status effect on them and you can't reapply it until it wears off.

Thanks Sparhawk!

That makes more sense Bungie. BTW, how do you like your BLM? I'm still trying to hone in on a job.

I'd better love it, I spent 8 years getting leveling it to be my first job to 75, to the point that it was a running joke in my LS that the day I reached 75 would be the day they shut down FFXI. When I dinged 70 and beat Maat they started saying "Don't do it Bungie, don't kill the game." Then when I did finally reach 75, they announced Abyssea 2 weeks later.
