Figured I'd post this for people who don't already know about it. Has lots of games, some cheesy, some pretty good. Most are free. Plus who can't like a hopping elephant that shoots lasers lol

The obvious Minecraft (http://www.minecraft.net/), and the lesser-but-should-be-known free game projects of Renard (http://renard.teknolust.org/sillyslardy/), such as Dash-Da-Dash DX (http://renard.teknolust.org/ddd/), and the soon-to-be-completed Harpy! Siren! (http://renard.teknolust.org/sillyslardy/harpy.html). He's made a game you can purchase and has another on the way, but you said free, sooo...

Iris online is a pretty good game for free, it's kinda like wow but the characters are all very much in the Anime style. Totally free to play and quite impressive given that.
