View Full Version : VanaFest Golden Gobbiebag Giveaway Blank Page Bug

Hi There!
I've got a NA SE account and I'm having trouble entering the contest.
I go here: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml
Then I click here: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/event/vanafest2012/index.html?id=gobbiebag
Then I click here: https://secure.square-enix.com/enqt/e/NMB2012NA/html
...which takes me to an SE account login page. I log in and it takes me to this page:
https://secure.square-enix.com/account/app/svc/login?ret=https%3A%2F%2Fsecure.square-enix.com%2Fenqt%2Fe%2FNMB2012NA%2Fhtml&cont=enqform
...which uses the SE template (logo top left, footer with about/privacy/copyright). The main div on the page is blank.
I have tried the following combination of browsers, OSs, ISPs - none with popup blocking, adblocking, script blocking, firewalls, or anything else that would create a problem:
Windows 7: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE (ugh) on sonic.net
Windows 7: IE on AT&T
OSX: Chrome, Firefox, Safari on sonic.net
Windows XP: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE on sonic.net
Windows XP: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE on AT&T
All exhibit the same blank page behavior.
When I view the source of the blank page in the last URL I pasted above, and check the web console, I see the following errors:
main.css, line 973, "Expected end of value but found 'px'. Error in parsing value for 'width'. Declaration dropped.
swk.js, line 58, "a is null"
So... are either of these things causing that blank page that's not allowing me (and apparently ONLY me, since no one else is reporting this) from entering the Gobbiebag Giveaway contest? Could it be something with my specific SE account? I'm able to log-in just fine to both FFXI and these forums.
I've already gone the support route (ticket number 1687731, please reference it!) and they suggested contacting my ISP even though I've gone to the trouble of testing this on two ISPs and a variety of hardware and browsers.
The clock is ticking, there are only 2 more days left in the contest...........

Update: I've since gone to a neighbor's house and pleaded to use their connection which is on yet a third ISP: Comcast. I used their Windows XP desktop (with about 4mb of RAM, thing was slower than Genbu) and got yet the same result. I now absolutely refuse to believe there's any sort of blocking going on at the ISP or browser level. Please hurry and fix whatever's wrong so I can enter the contest.

While waiting for an official answer, here are some thoughts I would personally look into if I were having the same issue.
If you had not tried so many different methods already, I would have suggested something simple and quick-to-try like SystemRescueCd.
But it is indeed quite unlikely that the issue lies there, since you have tried so many different things. Only thing I can really think of is a router problem, as in router on the way to the destination, not the modem you may or may not have (and I do believe some different ISPs might use the same routes here and there, though that's just my uneducated guess). Following the last link you mention not loading correctly, does indeed load up just fine for me.
Could you perchance try a 'traceroute' or 'tracert' to the address 124.150.158.110 and 199.7.71.231?
The latter is of VERISIGN.COM and seems to change a lot and has possibly nothing to do with this issue, but as it is obviously the 'verisign' that appears, or should appear in the middle with the log-in boxes (which I understand are not appearing for you?), I figured that might be worth not disregarding completely.
I'd also suggest trying the European link but it seems to connect to the same places (might still want to try it out). You would be unable to actually complete the survey, but that part comes after logging in obviously, so I'd try that just for curiosity's sake if for nothing else.
As for that error in main.css, I am quite certain it has nothing to do with this issue either. I've not yet looked into this too much so I can't say for sure what it means in this case (thinking of more like a warning about the width not playing along with something), but I can say that I do get it just as well with the other dozens of 'regular' java-script errors. ^^;
Just some thoughts~
Best of luck to ya!

Thanks for the reply. I've tried using the European link and I get the same blank page (not the region error, which means it's not getting far enough to do the region check or it is and it's unable to display anything).
I've then gone one further - since I'm in an EU LS, I used a screen-sharing app to login to the NA site from a friend's PC in the UK... same thing, blank screen... even logging in from another country!

I know the question you're going to ask about my first hop being >1ms... My main desktop is connected via CAT5 to a wifi router which is bridged to another wifi router which is then connected to the LAN side of my ISP's router. Regardless, I'm hitting both of those IP's - even if they are a bit slow, it shouldn't be NOT loading something based on ~200ms delay.
The secure.square-enix.com cert looks OK. Any other ideas?
Personally, I think there's something funky on my SE account. Some flag not set properly or something. I think the JS is trying to load some information on my account object and isn't failing gracefully. I'm really disappointed in not being able to participate in the giveaway, as that Ark Scythe is the only All Jobs scythe that can be used for proc'ing... :(

OK so at least you're not being dropped somewhere on the way.
Been testing a bit and can't reproduce the issue at all.
Once I thought I might have had something by disabling automatic redirecting, entering account info, then deleting cookies (i.e., getting rid of the log-in data), but as I tried it again just now, it would take me to a VanaFest themed site with an error message (unknown error ha), instead of taking me back to that log-in page as I thought it did before.
After logging in, it should redirect you to something like this: https://secure.square-enix.com/enqt/s/run?sq=bebc026ccf1b2ebf81198bae04b8af0a64eacdbf60cacd219bb81528ad598bbb46a12060e1baae462c2860bd3be2da95febc12bdcf8423
The link will be different each time though.
Only way I could get the page to not work right now was by turning off Jave-script, which obviously cripples the site quite completely, heh. Probably far fetched but, is it up-to-date for you? (Again, seeing how many different things you have tried, this doesn't seem too plausible).
The idea of it being account related for some reason is seeming more and more valid though, as there indeed seem to be no other reports about this, but I'm not quite sure if I'd bet on that just yet.
I'll keep trying and thinking, and will let you know here if I come up with anything else!

Yeah, I keep everything pretty much up-to-date - in fact my main browser is the Chrome dev-channel release on Win7 and OSX - because I like to keep on the cutting edge. But like I said, I've tried this on a variety of browsers, including downloading and installing fresh browsers (Firefox/Safari).
The best SE support could do was tell me to call my ISP - which doesn't do any good if it's not working on 2 other ISPs as well. Then they suggested I post here. But the clock is ticking... :(

IDK what you expect. Website works fine for me, My brother, Even used my Grandma's PC at her house. So its up and running.
Its on your side somewhere. Make sure you don't have NoScript active, if you do, Allow the page. I don't know what to tell you, they can't fix your computer/internet, and the site works fine for everyone else.
Its not that I'm unsympathetic, But the issue is on your end somewhere, Just need to figure out what it is, and that unfortunately is not their responsibility.

Just to be thorough..have you run a malware scan? It's possible you could have a DNS redirect going or something that is preventing it from properly linking by the FQDN's for the verisign portion or something. Could even be your ISP's servers creating a problem for that matter--could check that through the site the FBI had partnered with about the the big DNS Changer scare (http://www.dcwg.org/).

If you've read the thread, I've tried 4 different ISPs, one in an entirely different country. I don't see how you could possibly think this is a DNS or ISP related issue. The likelihood of 4 different PCs on 4 different ISPs ALL having a problem with browser/malware/firewall/DNS, etc is pretty low. I'm getting to the site just fine - it's just not displaying anything after I log in, and I've pointed out an error I'm seeing in the Javascript via the web console. How exactly is this MY fault?
I appreciate your sympathy, but if you're going to chime in, please take the time to actually read the thread.

Website loaded finely after reading your thread. Just like the only other guy who responded was able to do. Its on your end. You're probably overlooking something obvious that you forgot about, Which is normal for someone to do, Just think hard. RAIST is telling you exactly what a tech support would.
My money is NoScript, Because when i first tried to load the page, It was a blank white, Like what you said you got... I then checked my NoScript and enabled the page, and it loaded.
It could also be your region, pretty sure quite a few regions are not eligible. While you have a NA SE Account, What region did you get your Disc from? If you've registered an imported JP Copy, You're SoL, cause your ID would be JP, who are not eligible for it. If you're having the problem across multiple computers, This is my guess - Your account is not eligible for whatever reason.
Check the rules, see if it conflicts anywhere. - Also, Do you have more than 1 account linked to your SE I.D? If so, one account per SE I.D, you might be SoL because of that too. There's a lot of issues that may not deal with your internet we could be overlooking.
Make sure NoScript Isn't active.
Check contest rules once more, See if you overlooked something.
Make sure your Flash/Java/whatever is up to date.
Try on both Google and Mozilla (Can't hurt to retry)

I did read the thread....guess you aren't comprehending what I was talking about. An infected DNS will cause problems for entire REGIONS, not just individual PC's. It would have taken you all of 30 seconds, maybe less, to verify if your DNS is not having issues if you would have just followed the link I provided.
In case you haven't been following the news....this is a roughly year old threat that government agencies have been holding at bay, but the program just went off-line and ISP's AND their customers are at risk. Note, that is the Internet Service Providers as well as the individual customer's machines. Entire companies have been infected with this crud, and were at risk for loosing internet access overnight because of it.

The reason I'm posting here is because SE support thinks it's a website bug. I just want it addressed before the contest ends.
Again, it can't be noscript or anything like that if I'm using completely fresh browser installs (no extensions AT ALL), which I am. Others have already said they've gotten a region bug when logging in to the wrong region's contest site - but when I do, I'm not getting the region error - just the blank screen that I've already linked to. I get this screen with every browser, on every platform, on multiple ISPs. It literally cannot be something to do with my specific setup as I've tried it on computers that don't even belong to me and aren't even in my country. If it were a problem with region or something with my account, at the VERY least I'd expect an error message instead of a blank page.
As stated before, I think the Javascript that's throwing an error is trying to read information from my SE account that for whatever reason isn't set - which is why it's coming back as null. That whatever this value is, it hasn't been set, and hasn't been a problem prior to Right Now because I've been able to use the forums and FFXI. It's only now that my SE account is being accessed via the contest website that this problem is coming to light. I just want them to fix it in time.
My account meets all the stated eligibility requirements on:
http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/event/vanafest2012/index.html
I'm just a paying customer (and have been, for quite some time) who wants to be treated like all the rest and be able to join in on the fun. I'd love for Camate or Bayohne to chime in on this.
Karbuncle
07-12-2012, 01:42 AM
Thats just the thing though, Camate and Bayohne can't help you. They're Community Reps, They have absolutely nothing to do with Websites not loading or site bugs, Thats what the techs are for, Not even the Dev team knows whats going on with the sites.
Theres literally nothing anyone on this forum can do to help you, GM's, Camate, etc. You'd have to go directly to Square Enix Support, and even then, You'll likely get a guy telling you to check your connection, because he's going to log on to the site, be unable to duplicate your error (like me, Raist, and the other guy did), and then tell you there's nothing he can do.
Working at a hosting company as Customer service for a while, i can tell you, there's very little someone can do if they
A) Can't duplicate your Issue
B) Can't directly access your PC to verify what you're saying is correct.
Its just how it works with Internet sites not loading. If they can't duplicate your issue, they're going to tell you its on your side cause their client loads it just fine. IDK what to tell you, Its a sucky error and i feel bad for you, But theres nothing anyone here could do for you. Try contacting SE Support. If you already have, try again, speak to someone higher up... It might not help, But its the best you can hope for.

I have spoken with support yesterday and again today. They say the engineers are working on it but can't give me an ETA. I'd like the community reps to chime in because... hey, I'm a member of the community who's getting the shaft. Maybe what we need aren't community representatives but community advocates. :)
Going through these forums looking at all the locked threads with subjects like "omg, can't get my destrier beret" - well, it's disheartening. What makes this issue such an annoying one is that there appears to be a deadline attached to it. If they can't figure it out before the contest is over, that's it. No recourse. Hell, I may not even win anything - but to be kept from entering for reasons not within my control? That's pretty damned frustrating.
RAIST
07-12-2012, 06:04 AM
and to add insult to injury, they are pretty much insulated from any claims against them if something out of their control is preventing you from entering. One of the downsides to signing a User Agreement.
As Karbuncle said...nothing can be done here. Your bone to pick with them is a completely seperate division...I don't even know if you can get in contact with their webmaster(s) about site issues. I went through this last fall when I got cut off from the forums with the payment snafus--glitch in the site beyond FFXI's Support team's control that could not be resolved until my FFXI account was fixed. Almost 3 months later, I bit the bullet and switched to Crysta to reactivate---and magically everything was all hunky-dory with SE AM again.
Edit:
Here's a thought. Do you have access to the web at somewhere like a library--be it College Campus or a Public Library? These networks are <usually> kept pretty clean, might be worth a shot.
Enochroot

I've already gone to the trouble of testing on 4 of my own pieces of hardware (desktop, macbook air, thinkpad, ipad), my girlfriend's brother's laptop on his internet connection, my neighbor's desktop on his internet connection, and a UK friend's desktop via screen-sharing. Given that my local public library is currently being moved into a new building and everything is temporarily housed at the local YMCA, I don't think their network will be anything more than ad-hoc at best.
At this point I'm pretty much resolved to my fate. Come tomorrow after business hours (but before the contest ends) if I still can't enter the contest, I'll just drop my multiple choice answer and pick of shiny things here and hope someone at SE takes pity on me. Shame, too, apart from the moogle suit being cute, that all jobs scythe could be really useful.

You won't know until you try. These are common things you need to verify first. IF you do actually get someone from tech support to help you, they are going to want you to go through these steps. It is standard protocol. Some of these things take just seconds to verify, and have been known to pinpoint the root of the problem.
And like the DNS check earlier, verifying your Java is another one of these very things. Apps don't always recognize the versioning on newer browsers and it may revert to trying to run it against the reported Mozilla compatible version in the ID string---if you don't have the Mozilla support enabled (it isn't always enabled by default), it will cause issues. I used to do IT work for an IBM and Microsoft partner...ran into this regularly when IE7 and later IE8 came out. So much so that I always go in and enable it routinely now and it slipped my mind until after I made that last post and went back and edited it in for you to verify it is enabled. I even saw it happen recently on an XP/IE8 system that couldn't get flash videos to run, and after they wiped all Adobe/Java off the machine and installed the latest versions it STILL didnt' work....ticked the box, opened a fresh browser, and BAM----videos started playing again.
Also may want to double-check your enabled plugins as well. There have been cases where the Java SSV plugin got disabled somehow and that caused problems running some scripts.

Okay I said I wont suggest this, but, one more different OS you could very easily try is Linux, or more specifically Gentoo Linux.
http://www.sysresccd.org/
The latest stable x86 version at the time of writing is 2.8.0, and I just minutes ago downloaded it, installed to a USB-stick, and verified that it indeed does load the page without a problem on a Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Pro (designed for windoze XP) using the Midori browser on Xfce (older versions like 2.4.1 uses Firefox). As with regular Gentoo, it defaults to a Command Line Interface, but simply typing startx after boot should in most cases fire up the GUI. The instructions on the screen are quite simple, and it does offer some directions on what to do if 'startx' fails (whether it works or not without any modifications depends on the hardware a bit).
If nothing else, this should at least confirm that there indeed is nothing on the machine that is preventing things from working... I should think.
And no, this is not a shameless plug for Linux. >:Ð
Just a thought!
Best of luck to ya~

Unless it was an issue that a ton of people are having then you probably won't get any help with it unfortunately.
Judging by the official page, it looks like it's an event where only about 6000 players will receive anything at all. It isn't like the previous bonanzas where you could pick marbles that ended with each digit 0-9 and guarantee yourself a prize. Don't feel too bad, there will be plenty of losers =/

Again....just to rule it out...did you verify your browser support and plugins are enabled properly for the Java side? As stated earlier, clean installs can still fail because of default settings.
If everything can be verified to not be a problem on your side, then you have to go to the next link in the chain...your ISP...than check for issues with the segments past your ISP...and so and so and so forth. Have to start at one end and work your way out.

Haha ok you're just trolling me now.
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes, I've tested all that you're suggesting and more. I'm a network engineer and web dev by trade, so this kind of stuff isn't exactly rocket science for me. This is a language I speak. What do you want me to do, use wireshark to capture the https session and post the data for you? C'mon.
And as I've stated several (getting to be many) times in this thread, I've tried this on 4 other ISP's already (5 if you count via 4G) including an ISP that's outside of the country I am currently sitting in.
I appreciate that you're trying to be helpful. But the next step would be "keep trying different ISPs!" - c'mon, man, it's getting ridiculous. SE just needs to acknowledge the problem. If they don't have the resources to fix this before today - and it's looking like they either don't, or don't care - then the least they can do is just manually enter me. And even if they can't do that - just a little bit of communication would be nice. I talk to support, support tells me to come here, and this forum appears to be a black hole where no one from SE will respond - not even to say "we're looking into it."

no, actually trying to help. You have appeared to try NONE of the suggestions put forth here. It seems like you are asking for help, but unwilling to try to do anything to actually track down your problem.
If it is working for everyone else, but not you, then it would appear to be something specific to your environment that is causing the problem. Whether that is your system, your ISP, your local network segment, the network segments your ISP partners with or elswhere.... that all remains to be determined. You have to start somewhere....we're just trying to help you rule things out. It's what they do in support....but... guess you really don't want any help with your specific problem after all, since you know it all already, and have determined it is absolutely, positively SE's problem on their end. Good Luck.

Ok, I can now 100% confirm this is a problem with my SE account. A friend has given me their account details and I've tried it with their account and it worked 1st time. On my default browser, on my desktop, on my home network.

Wasn't my first suggestion that it has to do with your content I.D/SE Account breaking some rules?
Edit: Nope, It was my second suggestion.

But SE support has said they've found nothing wrong with my SE account - which is why they referred me to this forum... website... bugs...

Do you have any more accounts linked to yours? You can only enter 1 Content ID per SE Account. So if you linked 3-4 Accounts to one, like with family or friends, and one of them entered, You're SoL.
IDK what to tell you, the fact that you found out that its got to do with your SE Account says something... Which is not "Website bugs". So we can also add "Customer Support was wrong" to the list of possibilities.

Yes, it says that SE are the only folks who can fix this problem. I'm on hold with support... again... to try to get this sorted out... again. That they've told me there's nothing wrong with the account, and that I can enter the contest on the same PC/OS/Browser/ISP with a different SE account... means that they're wrong and need to look at it again.

Update: they've found and fixed what was wrong with my account that caused the website to error out without actually displaying an error.
When they released security tokens, I opted to get one. It died within the first two weeks - so I contacted support and they wanted me to pay the full price for a replacement, which I (rightfully) balked at. I unlinked the token from the account and tossed the token. Whoever performed the unlinking process must've screwed it up somehow. And that's that.
Why this took 3 tickets being opened before it actually got properly looked at/resolved, is beyond me. I'm just glad a friend of mine was able to verify that it was nothing wrong with my environment.
This account problem only came to light because of how the account information was being read by the contest website. It's my opinion that if this problem affects more than just me (and I'm the only poor sod who bothered complaining about it) - then SE should acknowledge it on the POL site and extend the contest entry time.
As for me, I'm glad to have had the chance to enter and would like to thank SE support rep Barbara A. for working to resolve it.

Hi Enochroot!
The Community Team is really glad that this was able to get resolved and we truly apologize that it wasn't done sooner. When we saw the situation we were discussing it internally on our side the past few days to see what could be done and what exactly the problem could be. Thankfully a solution was discovered!
With that said, good luck with the giveaway! :)

Hi Camate! It would've put me more at ease over the past few days if you'd chimed in a bit sooner to say exactly what you've just said. :)

Yeah, sorry. I offered the systemrescuecd as a one more way to test things out because that was something I could actually try out here as well, with default settings and all, so that everything should have been the same. I did imagine the result wouldn't change, but it would not have hurt to test.
Either way, this is not an issue one should need to be congratulated at all for (why are account related issues so difficult for a company to solve is beyond anything), but I think you have been very lucky indeed, so, congratulations ! !! !
You also made me feel really stupid because I didn't think of choosing the scythe myself... sigh... not that I'd win it. It would be fitting towards my luck to win and be annoyed about that tiny little bit, though, but oh well. xd
Good luck~

Don't feel bad, seems a lot of people didn't think of it. But besides Abyssea procs, perhaps the best reason to get the Ark Scythe is to dress up like the Tarutaru Ark Angel. Maybe the Shadow gear from Ein..... hmm.... {I have plans.}

Yeah, I do hope they will give us another way of obtaining it/them, but that's a story for another place.
On a totally unrelated note, I have to mention that I just happened to open a live-stream at twitch.tv, rather random, I usually don't even go there in the first place, but either way, saw someone /poke you hah! :S
Yer involved in a Voidwatch operation right now, at the Ru'Aun Gardens.
I can seee youuu~ >:ʒ

I am wondering if i could get a staff response to this.
I was one of the people that could responed and regisitar without a problem...but i'm wondering will there be an extesion to the contest? many people were unable to enter because the fix to the page problem was nearly at the end of the contest and thoes who didn't see it in time were more or less screwed out of it. I'm Glad i could enter but i'm not sure i feel like its not entirely fair to win when somebody else could have. Just a thought when reading through the forums.

exactly, the fix came too late and there was no clear way presented on where to go to enter only description of what the event is. now have to watch everyone else win and wait until the next time this happens. it's like missing the old lottery which sucks.

If SE knows exactly what was wrong with my account that prevented the contest form from displaying properly, it's likely that they could run a query to find out how many other accounts had similar problems.
It'd be nice for everyone to get a chance to enter. At the very least, if they find other accounts with problems similar to mine and those people were still unable to enter (given that the problem was only identified and solved and discussed in this thread, and only on the day the contest ended) - they should be given some consolation prizes. Send them something to make 'em smile.

I know you're all on the edge of your seats waiting for an update now that the contest is over. But after all this trouble just to enter the damned thing, I still didn't win anything. Ah, well. :)

Heh, if there was anyone I thought would won, it was you.
Same here though, nothing at all, while it seems some were able to win multiples due to being able to enter any character name as the 'winner' (or just due to having multiple POL accounts not linked to a single SqEX account).
Funky that.
Well, conglaturations to us for being able to participate, though it almost feels like as if it was a lottery on who gets to participate in the anniversary party...
