View Full Version : What's the point?

When it comes to the 99+ versions of emps, mythics, or relics, we already know that it is literally a time sink and unbelievably long trial to undergo with multiple people and all for one person. It was stated these weapons would be extremely difficult to achieve, and only a select few would ever lay hands on one.
Whats the point then? Why spend the time to program the afterglow, its effects, and colors if only 3 people on all the servers combined will ever see one? According to the census, not a single person has yet to even get a 99+. I understand the reasoning behind making it difficult, but there is a fine line between difficult and absurd.

I honestly don't mind it in itself, as long as it's purely cosmetic. What I have a problem with is the prospect of future updates. If ever there will be a need to further upgrade them, this 99+ trial stands in the way of it.

To my understanding there is 1 currently, Pchan made a statement about it. However I do very much agree with you, I see them as wastes of time. The amount of things needed is insane, the amount of worth in gil is in the billions, and overall it is not worth it.

But its not...
"Afterglow (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Afterglow)" is a beneficial status effects that is given to party members in an area surrounding (but excluding) the wielder, similar to Sphere.
The duration for each "Afterglow" is 30 seconds.
"Afterglow" effects activate when the weapon skill corresponding to the equipped weapon, excluding shields which activate upon usage of Shield Bash.
Separate "Afterglow" effects will stack if they are cast within the same effect duration. Each "Afterglow" has a unique effect depending on the specific weapon.
■Relic Weapons: Increased Accuracy and Ranged Accuracy.
■Mythic Weapons: Increased Attack and Ranged Attack.
■Empyrean Weapons: Increased Critical Hit Rate.
■Aegis (99-2): Reduced magic damage taken.
■Ochain (99-2): Reduced physical damage taken.

We have, and it's not much (you can try them on the test server yourself). And that's not an accident, SE said themselves that they never intended to make them great. They wanted it to be a sign of achievement more than an actual upgrade to the weapon.

Afterglow effect: This player has no life and has sucked the souls of all their friends.
:(
Does it still not benefit the wielder of the weapon? Maybe if the effect was "completely nullifies damage of everyone around them, and boosts their attack and accuracy up to 999" it might be worth it.

/sigh... Why am I not actually surprised.
How do you test them on the test server btw? I am on the server but never could find a way to test Afterglow sadly.

Its same as Sphere, I remember that much, you get nothing, people around you get the bonus though.

Correct, afterglow does not affect yourself, and furthermore it's overwritten by party members' own aftermath effect.

That I had heard, proving the point even more so that it is worthless ><;
Why did SE even make this?!

I see the 99 +1 empyrean weapon as a trophy item, nothing else. The actual glow is kinda cool!

What you need to do is find the trial number of the weapon 99+, then search that number at the trial moogle. It will give you a option of keeping the weapon.

Have +HQs ever really been worth it? Sure for people who could afford/obtain it. But for the vast majority, +1 gear is very overrated, minor boosts, the same for Relic/Mythic/Emp 99 afterglow. aka +1

I am of the belief that every game (single player, MMO, or otherwise) should always have nigh unobtainable gear and unkillable bosses, in addition to real gear/fights.
A players growth should never be limited by the game itself. You may have to move Heaven and Earth to get the gear/ win the fights, but the option should always be availible.

How very deep of you, and normally I'd agree with you. But if you are 'moving heaven and earth' for something that's largely cosmetic... That's where I take issue at.

Fair enough, and I agree the incentive should be there.
If anything there is DISincentive to do it now, just cuz you would look like Pchan

My favorite part is how afterglows do not stack with and are overwritten by aftermaths, so you most likely can't even use the afterglow to help the friends who got it for you.

I guess if you're selfish enough to abuse your friends to get 250 marrows just for you it clearly means that you don't care about getting them any relic weapons of their own, so they won't have any Aftermath to overwrite it with. Maybe that was the point SE was trying to make? Afterglow as a consolation price for all the pour souls slaving away for the one guy with his shiny weapon.

Yeah, the first time I tried them on the test-server, knowing what they require, I figured the 'glow' is actually the tears of the character from all the misery and nonsense. ^^;
There is a tiny little part somewhere in me thinking it's a good idea, it's only that the fact that it requires the same item as the previous trial makes it all come crashing down, beating it to ridonkulous. It really needs to be some other item you need for it, since you are obviously 'sacrificing' a lot by either not helping a friend or few get them, use them for your other weapons, or even sell them.
I can imagine it creates grief of sorts amongst players as well, and this should not be.
Why not change it require a different item, or hell, change it to 'defeat Arch-Dynamis Lord 6666 times' or something. >.>;
Blah ! !! !

With the cost for 99+ afterglow you can just spend the gil to get your fellow friends some relics and it will help more than the aura itself hahah.

Same thing I was thinking, Relic Afterglow is about 25 relics in worth, I would rather just buy everyone in my linkshell a relic and be better off lol.
