As I have been keeping myself updated with the tragic events that are ongoing in Japan, it's heartbreaking to see the loss of life, home, and comfort of the victims there.
I have come to a realization that while it is a sacrifice for us FF players (and it seems that for others it is an unbearable sacrifice) that we cannot play the game because SE shutdown the servers to conserve the energy, I feel that the FF community can do more than just bite the bullet by not playing the game for at least a week, but actually do something proactive and generous by helping the victims in Japan.
I am certain there are numerous fundraisers to help relief cause in the aftermath of the earthquake/tsunami, but I think that it is a good idea for the FF community, with the help of SE, to have our own fundraiser and contribute to the relief efforts.
SE has already decided to not bill us subscription fees for the month of April, but that does nothing for the disaster victims. I am thinking that SE should implement a way for us players to donate money to aid the relief efforts. Maybe they can have an option, similar to purchasing the add-on scenarios or optional service on POL, where we can donate a certain amount of money equivalent to or more than the subscription fees for April, and then that money is used for the relief efforts. And as a token of gratitude, SE has a special in-game item for those who donated.
The point I attempt to convey is that we can and should do more to help the disaster relief efforts (if you are not already doing so) than merely wait for SE to push the ON button for the game servers. The $12.99+ that we spend for a month's worth of gaming leisure can feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and comfort the weary in a time of most need.
If my idea seems fool-hearted or impractical, then my only hope for now is that SE and the FF community can find some more ways to be more involved with the relief efforts. Thank you to all those who read and seriously considered my thoughts.
