It's downloading a patch and when it downloads everything and gets to "patch.txt" it just stops and then gives me the error pol 1160. I keep just hitting retry and now its download the patch again but very slowly whats the deal? everything else works fine and just yesterday I was playing this game with no issues why now does it do this? makes no sense.

Same for me, patch.txt is a huge roadblock and is what destroys my chances everytime.

Getting same code on my PS3. also its saying

D:image/ffxi/ROM/285/9.DAT

Must be a corrupt file, SE please fix this as this is how my wife plays the game. and the Update won't let her past it.

What basically happens in an update:
Viewer goes through all of your FFXI files stored locally and reads each to find their individual version numbers. This is all internal and no connection is yet made to the update servers.
Viewer then downloads patch.txt, which contains a list of all the individual file version numbers for the latest update. This is the first real attempt to communicate with the update servers.
Viewer then compares patch.txt to its own list of version numbers to see which individual files need to be downloaded. This, again, is performed entirely without communicating with the update servers.
Viewer then starts downloading the specific files that need updating. This is the second time Viewer connects to the update servers in the process.
Viewer goes through the process of installing all the new individual files. Naturally, this is again offline.

I want to say thank you Ziyyigo-Tipyigo that actually explains a lot and means why this time its taking so long because its actually downloading something instead of checking locally.

It's a totally brain-dead system, the stupid design means that there's a huge increase in server load since everyone is trying to get patches, their clients error-out and the whole tihng re-starts downloading the patch info. I expect something like 95% of the server load is this asinine re-downloading the patch.txt EVERY DAMNED TIME AN ERROR OCCURS.

Truly a cretinous bit of software design that hasn't been sorted out in the 10 years it's existed.
