View Full Version : Cone attacks become AoE when a mob turns

This is annoying. Wiped to an ADL today because it did a 360 degree Tera Slash and killed every DD we had even though we were fanned out. Normally Tera Slash would only kill 1 or 2 DDs because it's a narrow cone but since someone pulled hate while it was in the middle of the TP move it hit everyone.
To fix this maybe you could make it so mobs cant change target while readying a cone attack.

This is a player fault, they really don't need to spend time on fixing this.

How exactly is it the players fault?

I's funny when it kills one person on each side, but none of the people inbetween.

How did this question actually get likes? o.O lol
Because ADL is a zergfest and they purposefully faned out to avoid the conal aoe, FYI hate randomly changes when you're zerging so i reiterate his question how is it the players fault? we all know hate mechanics are level 60 broken.
I could equally ask you how your post got a like. Edit: apparently they unliked your post

Learn to keep hate on one person? [/sarcasm]
Could've been that 1% chance where someone gets hate as soon as ADL starts using his attack...but by then when the TP Moves goes off it already hits the person right in front of them. Which is weird. What other explanation could there be for ADL to suddenly turn his cone attack into an AoE?

I found out that I clicks to reply with quote on the wrong post. LOL.
I meant to ask the guy who said: It's a player fault.
This is what lack of sleep does to me. QQ
Oh, and to point out the real issue here:
We all know hate mechanics are level 60 broken.

Did you just say to learn to keep hate on one person, not only in FFXI in general, but during a zerg?

He did.
Although, in all fairness, any job known as a staple "tank class" (cough, PLD) should be able to talk with relative success even in a zerg. Just sayin'.

Should != Can. The game is broken and doesn't function that way. You can't "learn" to tank in a situation like that, or in most situations really; there's no proper framework in place to allow it.

How did this question actually get likes? o.O lolI'm guessing you have never fought ADL or any VW mob for that matter. DDs cap hate in about 4 seconds in zergs and the mob starts doing it's impression of a washing machine agitator. The only thing you can do as a player in these zerg situations to keep hate on one person is do terrible damage. So that may be why my question got likes.
Edit: You quoted me by mistake I guess?

Key word is zerg. Who the hell brings a pld to a zerg (ok some people bring pld for vwnm but that's hardly for tanking, but for procs and add-holding)??? And even if you did bring a pld for ADL, there is no way in hell he'll keep hate, unless the DDs absolutely suck, in which case I question why you're doing ADL in the first place.

I didn't say it was wise to do it. For individuals with signatures that joke about "downs syndrom" and people posting on this forum, people like to ignore the fine print.
I said that a tank class (and in FFXI's case, this is personified in PLD) should be able to tank anything, even in a zerg, for at least 15-20 seconds, depending on monster type, party configuration, etc. Of course, for the the sake of maintaining "balance" (read as: not changing too much about anything in fear of destroying the universe), this does not work.
Moral of the story: even "tanks" can't "tank" in FFXI. And this was a problem long-before VWNMs. Which, by the way, I do every weekend with my LS.

Take a look at his post history he sits on the forum waiting for a new topic to only post the most stupid statements as the first response. He has yet to constructively contribute to the forum in any way shape or form.

but since someone pulled hate while it was in the middle of the TP move it hit everyone. Obligatory "control hate better."
Not that it shouldn't be looked at, but I've never heard of this with any other monster.

It happens with every fan-based AoE.
Always fun when a Malboro uses its bad breath on *everyone* because of a DD taking hate off the tank mid-TP move. Also was fun on Kirin's breath attack back in the 75-cap days when people were doing the zerg-strat.

The only cone it may not work with is the Ironclad style standard cone attack cause the mobs do seem to be stuck in place when they use it. If that's the case, the same mechanic should be added to TP moves.

Just because it's always been like that doesn't mean it's OK:
A rotation of a fan-shaped area is still a fan-shaped area according to Linear Algebra, one of the most important aspects of game development. It's not supposed to EXPAND unless
a.) it was intentional, and the 'rotation' actually causes a completely separate linear application from a fan region to a semicircle region, or
b.) something is wrong, or the death beam is not actually "immediate"; in other words, it literally drags the beam from t = 0 to t = activation time.
I can't imagine it would be a.) because that is just stupid and would be more work for SE in the first place.
EDIT: The game describes such attacks as "fan-shaped area" attacks, so I don't think it's intentional.

I question what you were doing in those 8 years, because it isn't an overly rare occurrence. You further exhibit your ignorance in your remark toward holding hate.

I know I'm coming in all tl;dr but...
How does one hold hate with a straight up zerg method? Once DD's reach the hate cap the mob will continue to turn to the last person who acted on it, no? The best thing would be to have everyone pile up on top of each other, like standing on a Wyrms feet so it's not turning. But then they all will be hit with cone attack. So by fanning out, you get mobs that turn during TP moves. Unless I'm missing something.

You clearly don't know what a zerg is. You also clearly don't know how the enmity system in FFXI works. I'd suggest you stop posting about it before you make yourself look even worse.

Imagine a cast-iron skillet designed with sharpened edges and no handle. Imagine heating it for two hours while making an unimaginable amount of bacon cheese-burgers. Imagine holding that skillet properly.
The enmity system in Final Fantasy XI at level 99 is that cast-iron skillet. I am now too hungry to finish my metaphor, but I think I've made my point.
