So, with all this talk about maps lately, how about candles?
In FFXII, candles reveal the hidden passages/areas on a map that are hidden, even after you acquire the zone's map. Barheim Candle completes the Barheim Passage map, for example. I always liked to think of it as the candle revealing hidden ink on the map.
Anyway, FFXI needs something like this. I like the idea of actually earning this feature, though; not having the existing maps simply improved. That's not always fun. I don't like appreciate Monomi: Ichi's casting time reduction much. I would have rather had Monomi: Ni. It's fun to earn and upgrade things most of the time.
Examples of incomplete maps that have too many hidden passages and definitely need candles/map expansion:
Temple of Uggalepih
Sea Serpent Grotto
Phomiuna Aqueducts
Garlaige Citadel [S]
Also, it would be nice to have all/nearly all zone lines labeled on the maps by default (not with the candle concept). It's bad enough that Batallia's mostly inaccessible zoneline to Beaucedine Glacier is shown, but Ranguemont Pass is hidden from the Beaucedine map, which is how 99% of players access Beaucedine the first time. And it's downright ridiculous that the maps of Gustaberg/Ronfaure/Sarutabaruta don't show where you can enter the cities. That really messed me up as a noob.
