Please add a filter for the sound of <call> >_> I would like to not have to mute my computer (as I enjoy other activities synonymously with ffxi) in order to escape the ear piercing sound of multitudes of people un-aware of the chime-tell function to grab someones attention.
You can go into the config menu and disable all game sounds via Start Menu > Programs > PlayOnline > Final Fantasy XI > Final Fantasy XI Config. Click on the Sound tab and uncheck "Enable Sound". This of course means you lose battle music, background music, sound effects, everything beyond the PlayOnline login process. This is the only way I've found to turn off the calls without muting the speakers all together. I agree a filter would be nice though.

A filter would be too binary for me, however there are two volume controls in the FFXI client, one controls sound effects and the other controls music. Perhaps we could have a third one for calls so we could still have calls without them being so loud that player's ears start to bleed.
On a side note, until this simple feature is implemented, if you are fortunate enough to be running a modern OS like Windows 7 instead of a decade old computer with obsoleted software, you can adjust the volume of FFXI itself from outside the game independently of other programs, then tune the sound effects and music bars so that they are loud enough to hear without the calls being too loud.

A better option would be to have a sound slider for them. As it stands, all <call>s play at max volume regardless of what you have the overall sound output set to under Config, which is extremely annoying when I'm playing using my headphones.

I'm gonna have to agree with this. For a long time due to my room set up, I had to play ffxi with headphones. I need to play ffxi with sound or i get bored quick, and everytime someone uses a call it hurts my ears because i have sensitive hearing. Pretty much docs said i hear slighty higher and lower frequency then normal. So a call even with my sound both in game and my headphone settings to low it still sounds like the volume with call is full blast. Constently telling people to not use calls due to making my eardrum go nuts gets old.
Either that take the calls out completely as personally speaker, they have no use other then to try and get the attention of an afk'er. Most of the time people just zerg events w/o a plan and just do w/e. Or they use vent to relay the plan.
only time i seen call used is
1 stun chain
2 weapon skill chain starting
3 dynamis pulling.
4 get the attention of an afk'er
and most of those no longer apply.

As someone who uses various calls, primarily <call3>, to annoy both myself and other people; I am opposed to anything that would make them less annoying.

When Botulus uses chainspell <call3> is highly appropriate to get people using fools drink asap.

Let me represent every event organizer or party leader who has had to use an annoying call to get the attention of the DRG reading forums or that WHM who stepped away 10 minutes ago...
{Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass.}
Calls are our best resource to wrangle in the people whose attention goes elsewhere during downtime. Sure, you can "deal" with it if it's a repeating issue, but making 2-17 other people wait while some guy looks at Christina Hendric's leaked pics... No thanks!

Make the window button flash instead of those annoying <calls>.

A call filter is a waste of time, we need brd and cor filters.

I think this would be a great option if the game weren't multiplatform. :\

the calls are too loud though... I feel my eardrum vibrate after peopl use calls. If you dislike people essentially leeching events then stop having leeching be "OK". And start not only kicking people in the event but boot them from the LS. Leeching in events was never an issue years ago. And it saves the ears of the rest of your members. I went deaf for a few seconds once from call 2 after my eardrums vibrated for 3 seconds. Which btw is very painful. Didn't help i was already sick with a cold resulting in my ears being congested.

You could just replace the sound files in the game with others. I have a set that makes the first four calls play as low volume Navi sound effects from Ocarina of Time. It's been around for years, and I've had no trouble finding the links to it.

And a full dump of the PS2 DAT files has been available for a couple of years now, with a means to put them back on the system. I know at least a couple of hundred people have downloaded them. Someone must have the knowledge to figure out the file structure and make modifications for them...

Goddamn you do nothing but whine and bring your personal issues/ailments/relationships into 90% of every post you make when it's completely, totally, one hundred percent irrelevant. You have THAT sensitive hearing? Turn sound off then, for crying out loud. Make a choice between being bored and having your ears hurt.
As for a <call> filter, I don't deem it necessary at all. The call function is there for a reason; to get party members' attention. If someone in your party/alliance is abusing the function, kick them or blacklist them.
