View Full Version : What do you use your PUP for?

I retired from the game about three years ago, maybe less. I've come back, and am interested in puppetmaster again. I had a 75PUP, and I really just did BC's with it. Now with all this content update, what are PUP's really used for? Is it just something you use for fun? When a more suitable job isn't required? Or is there actually a demand and need for PUP for a given situation?
In short: What do you use your pup for?

You use it when ever people ask for it... Usually from what I've experienced, fights that rely on the pets as the main attackers or tanks.

If you like it, play it. Make it fit in if you can.
But what I have found is much like before its mostly used for going out and soloing. Nobody will really ask for it and when you say you can come pup most of the responces are 'dont you have anything else?'
With the sheer amount of gil it takes to get your attachments it renders the job kindda null and void. I love pup and love to play pup but had to retire it. No one wanted it and my smn and bst were much preferred pet jobs in almost any situation.
Its sad cause if played correctly it can really be useful but its so absurdly expensive for the limited uses the player base has imposed on it.
What also doesnt help pup are the ppl who are lvling it just to have all jobs at 99 and not buying any attachments at all. I have even encountered players who were in their 50s who didnt know what an attachment was or what thier animators were for. So pup is seen as even more gimped by some players.

You can still level it even without all the "high-priced" attachments. And still have fun.

True, and thats fine for book burning but if u really want ur pup to shine and do the maximum nuking or dd u can outside of that in endgame content u need to pump gillions and gillions into attachments. And still you will be asked to come on another job. Its sad, pup really is fun

I use my PUP on pretty much anything outside Abyssea.
IMO its crazy strong inside as well as out, but the godalmighty"!!'s" reign supreme in there so i don't get to take it there as much. But that's not really a PUP specific problem as much as SE yet again not counting on the playerbase to min/max to the extreme on content.
Best answer is to lvl PUP if you want to.
You can play the "flavor of the month" with the community and be partially successful...until for w/e reason the fickle playerbase decides Y job is now the best and pushes X job out into the cold. Or you can just pick job/s you like and build them up regardless of the whim of the mob and have fun.

I use PUP in Dynamis when there's a lot of people in every dreamlands zone. Strobe/Flash Bulb/Barrage/shield bash/etc all count at WS procs, and every one of those camps is open due to the overcrowding JA proc mobs.

Currently I'm pretty much 100% PUP on everything from solo to linkshell events. Used to be RDM, but if there's any mage bringing /RDM there's no need for a RDM main, period. With /RDM being almost mandatory, and PUP's rise to godhood, it's an easy choice ;D

Can you explain this pup's rise to godhood?
Also, can someone explain maneuvers to me? Is your automaton a lose cannon? Boosting it's main stats by using maneuvers? Or is there a way to control it so that you know exactly what it's going to use/do? I played PUP before and my automaton always seemed to have a mind of it's own.
-- Sorry I'm asking so many questions, I'm all over the job forums. I've recreated a character after a long retirement, and am trying to make the best decision on which jobs I'd like to take the time to master. I've got limited gameplay time due to school, work and girlfriend, so I want to get as much information about the jobs I'm interested in from the experienced players that use them, before I decided :) --

Just a little surprised you took PUP to 75 before and don't quite understand maneuvers =\ They do anything from trigger a JA attachment (light maneuver for Flashbulb), promote use of particular weapon skills (dark maneuver on Valoredge frame to force Cannibal Blade), or just bolster the effect of certain passive attachments (thunder maneuvers to increase the base double attack from the Coiler).
What's much more complicated (and useful) to understand is overload. Simply speaking, using a single elemental maneuver too often can cause the master to overload which prevents any maneuvers from being used for a varying duration. This does not make the automaton useless; however, it certainly affects its behavior that you should be properly influencing with maneuvers. Helpful details about overload can be found here : http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Overload
I love PUP. From the appearance to the play style. I use mine mostly for soloing and lowman scenarios. Especially since they patched the A.I. of the mage frame, PUP is a par monk with a versatile pocket white mage. It's not keen at staggering in abyssea, so solo play is perfectly efficient. But you can sub THF and with a tarutaru sash and Dread, you can have TH4 (I enjoy farming this way). Most PUPs will tell you, it's pretty much about the fun, though.

The automaton stopped trying to kill us and learned some new tricks (such as buffing us through the roof ;).
Ofcourse, SE is still trying to sneak in the occasional end-game mage gear with no relevant stats for PUP, but I guess that's barance for you.

Godhood, lol, I like the sound of that Bokmog.
SE has done an extreme overhaul of what PUP used to be in the 75 days, 99% of it aimed at fine-tuning the Auto itself. Its a WHM/RDM/BLM/PLD/MNK/WAR/RNG hybrid, can cover a shitload of roles all in one tiny little unit. Its not without its fair share of negative feedback from the constant AI screwups (still ain't right, SE, but you're close! honest!) and various other jobs. With all the funky Empy +2 gear and H2H buffs (from the 75 days, we used to have C- grade H2H.. its now B+.) we can solo alot of mobs, NM's, without outside assistance.
That, and Stringing Pummel is crazy.. got it right straight off the bat, SE. :)
EDIT: Feel like I should expand on this;
In the past Stormwaker frame/head combo was sub-par and nobody every used it due to lack of Cure V and Tier III nukes onry (personally I preferred Tier III nukes, much less MP consumption) but now? it cast Stoneskin and Phalanx on us. It doesn't have Erase (Soulsoother *finally* got this a few years later.. ugh) or -na spells but its formidable.
Valoredge frame/head has an Aegis grade Shield & Bash, with 3 min recast (can lower to 1 1/2 mins with Barrier Module, PLD has 5 min recast on SB.) in Abyssea the Shield Bash numbers are crazy with Hammermill installed, average around 300~500 damage easy (tends to fall to around 100~200 without Hammermill installed..). Damage is simular outside of Abyssea too depending on mob type.. slap Galvanizer & Coiler in there and those String Shredders do some crazy shit.
Sharpshot frame/head now has Armor Shatterer, tends to do a minimum of around 2000~ damage in and out of Abyssea, and evade rivaling if not passing that of a THF. .. 'nuff said.

I think I have to remove the TacPro though, now that we know what it does.

I use my PUP to clean the shower, take the rubbish out and to massage my feat.
I kid, PUP is useful in Dyna, perhaps get a hold of a Tarutaru sash for TH and get in on some Dyna currency farming. Otherwise I just mostly use it for soloing as unfortunately people prefer me on my other jobs. But still, PUP is pretty badass for reasons already discussed in this thread.

Dynamis, Nyzul, and any event that consists on fighting many not too tough mobs is the perfect field for PUP, as we can kill those safely and fast.
Many missions, too, can be done throw-pets-at-it style with Valoredge.
As for the "High end" content, which right nos is only VW... I've done several as PUP, and I've generally done well, but I'm not usually invited as PUP.

Soloing Dynamis atm... upgrading my Relic +2 gear on PUP; next in line will be BST, then DRK I suppose... dunno, but I <3 DRK--nostalgia. Recently upgraded my Ursine Claws to their final form: Ursa Majors Dmg: 34, +11 Dbl Attck and I'm thoroughly impressed. Fun times on PUP!!!!!
