I'm currently attemtpting to skillup my weapons; I have the Terminus earring, combat skill prowess active, I'm using elshena and my server is currently affected by martial master. So, i'm looking for help here, from either SE or other players. Why with all those effects am I hardly recieving any skill ups?
I would really appreciate if SE could just simply let us know the difference between the skillups foods.
Thx

probably your choice of target. Need to have the right level range proportionate to the level of your skill. If it's around level 40 caps for your job, then you need to have mobs within a reasonable level range to a level 40 character (DC-IT). Note also that if they are too far up the scale from an IT that you would normally XP on in a group, the rate of the skillups will slope off considerably, so they need to be within a REASONABLE range as an IT (ie, a 40 level gap can work against you versus only 4-10 levels).
Sometimes you need to also take your gear into account. Items that increase your final ACC/ATT ratings can work against you sometimes if they are overpowering your stats (this includes DEX/STR mods, not just ACC/ATT).

My personal favorite way to skill up: Abyssea burn Warrior to 99, grab a bunch of weapons of different types, Go to abyssea grab about 5-10 mandy's .
Retaliation. Go to town. you get skill ups on counter, you will see the skill ups flying in.
Ninja for both kat and GKT, Paladin for shield, Monk for parry.

just seen a pattern when I would get close to caps...skillups stop coming, take stuff off and they come back. If you think about it, it would actually make sense....increasing the difficutly in hitting your target consistantly for a decent amount of damage. Not gonna bulkup much in the weight room without doing some heavy lifting--might tone up, but not bulk up.
Always done this, and when others have tried it they've said it appears to have an effect as well. Used beseiged to hit 75 caps ages ago the same way, even hit 80 caps on staff out there on SMN with first level cap. Most recent time I specifically remember it happening was when I learned fell cleave in Ru'Aun Gardens doing page 3 (11 groundskeepers, 75-78) on WAR in my PJ's. And no.. this wasn't with any skillup food or anything affecting skill rate, just normal fighting--stripped off the perle and accuracy accessories and got skills going again.

Yea...that's what's called placebo effect or PoI conjecture. There has been 0 acknowledgment from official sources, nor ANY data, nor a blip about them from a credible source. I think your just full of shenanigans there.

That cuts both ways...I've seen no such evidence to the contrary. However, in my own personal experience (as well as several friends), I have seen gear choice have an effect on the quality of my skillup experience. I have used this to cap out all weapons but xbow and throwing so far across 10 jobs (weapons I don't rely on for anything other than pulling), one of those being WAR. You are free to accept as a viable option or not, it is your choice. As for me....it has appeared to work, and to be honest, when thwacking mobs at the lower end of the DC range to skill that pose no threat, I see no harm in trying it if it takes me from the odd .1 skillup every 3 or 4 kills to a more consistent stream of skillups on the same targets.

Try it before you knock it. I figured it was common sense public knowledge that decking the house has a negative impact on skill ups but apparently not. Next thing I'll hear is about how it's just placebo that crafting skill ups slow down to a crawl when within 1 level to cap because SE has never said otherwise. It's all about having room for your character to learn. When something is easy to do there is little room left for learning. This is why it is so agonizing to cap weapon skills. You're like 1 skill level away on GA and you go 1, 2, 3, 4 monsters with no skill ups and you start losing your mind because before when you were dozens of skills away from cap they came so much easier. BECAUSE YOU HAD A LOT TO LEARN STILL TO CAP... YOUR SKIIIIIIIIIIIILL. That's when you move to something harder and you finally cap your weap and move on.

How is this not common knowledge amongst the older playerbase by now?

Well one thing that could help is if there are pieces of equipment that have a negative skill effect on them could help skill up, especially when close to the cap. I used to create gear on Oblivion for that exact reason to raise skills faster. I think I've seen a few pieces like that here on FFXI but not sure what skills are covered by what piece, you would have to research that yourself.
