While SE has the FFXI servers disabled I'd like to propose to SE and the FFXI forum community a bold idea.
Since the beginning of my adventures on the Asura world, achievements in the department of equipment upgrades has been a source of frustration and drama for most leaders and average players alike.
Here I will encourage a change to re-energize the end game player base and remove most of the strife associated with FFXI's item treasures.

Link new NPC vendors to all sources of equipment drops and Trial of the Magians quest item drops.
Create a new universal currency for these vendors similar to what ampoules of Therion Ichor or assault points achieved for their associated activities in Treasures of Aht Urhgan.
Players would obtain this new currency by doing nearly any real objective in the game.
This would include missions, quests, battlefields, bastion, campaign battles, notorious monster battles etc.
When a character obtains a title from a battlefield, quest, mission or notorious monster, that character would gain access to the stock associated with that title that the new NPC vendors would distribute.
For example once a character has the title from King Behemoth, that character could use their new currency bank to purchase a Defending Ring, or anything else that is possible in the King Behemoth treasure pool.
Do this for every equipment source.

If successful this proposal I believe would greatly improve the entire environment concerning FFXI character development.

i kinda have mixed fellings about these but be prepared for a mass flame rage thowards u , if ppl are already complaning about how abyssea killed partys just wait to see what they will tell about buyable nm drops. as for personal opinion while this would pretty much solve a great deal of drama on endgame it would kinda take that feeling of getting a rare, special item away so i really dont know how to define it, part of me thinks it might be a good ideia while the other part tells it would kinda suck to have a mass wave of ppl walking around on defending rings and such so really i dunno lol it would take the rare feeling of the item, also on a less personal note this would also affect economy as well, so this would really needs to be checked out trough in order to see if its viable or not. actually thinking about it abit depending on how much the items cost they would still be rare anyway, well dunno lol.

While its an interesting idea, I doubt it will work unless the amount of universal currency needed for the best stuff was absurdly high. While i do like the idea of having more ways to get certain rare equipment, It should be in a way that isn't too easy. Id like some challenge when it comes to getting the best stuff, not have it spoonfed to me.

The idea is most of the storyline game objectives and older expansion content is being largely ignored specifically because it is no longer a source of the new high demand equipment upgrades. It's difficult to do almost anything other characters have progressed passed, as well as have a large amount of players completely agree to the terms of treasure distributions. Maybe could add to the difficulty of using a title based equipment currency and npc vendor system by introducing a new challenge to unlock the npc vendor's store, eh? As for the "Special because it's rare" arguement, I only view that as a bottleneck issue, where the more influencial powerful linkshell leaders usually dictate placement of that type of treasure. If you're a player looking to create a specially equiped character, I'd recommend attempting a Mythic Weapon quest.
