My problem is FFXI crashes my PC after about 30min or so of playtime sometimes more sometimes less. By crash I mean FFXI freezes up my entire computer and I am forced to hit the restart button.

I first went to tech support through email and they sent me to phone support. They said the DXDIAG info I provided them was perfect, I have every spec up to par and there was no problem there. Yet they have no solution for me.

I have searched through Google and the forums but haven't found a solution to help me. Anyone have this problem or know how to fix? Help would be greatly appreciated because I refuse to destroy my computer just to replay a game I once loved.

Thanks

more often than not, this is usualy an overheating issue, or possibly a bad cell in a memory module.

If you are using an ATI card, the stock fan speed profile may not be speeding it up enough and your GPU or Video RAM may be overheating--you could try going in to the overdrive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Va9Fe9j0TTI) settings and putting a manual fan speed in to help keep the card cool.

Check that your heatsinks/fans are properly mounted, voltages are set correctly, etc. and stress test the system with something like Prime95 (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100352-hardware-stress-test-prime95.html) or memtest86 (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/246994-guide-to-using-memtest86/) overnight to see if they detect any issues.

My card is a Sapphire Radeon hd 6950 2g dirt 3 edition, also all temps are fine. I will give it a try running the memtest and post some results, thanks.

Should have included this info in the OP. When SE last tested drivers (http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/envi/win/win01.html?pageID=win), they didn't give the green light for the 69xx series. Don't think they had found a fix for it yet back around Christmas time when someone else posted the exact same problem with their 6950. Last I remember, it was an issue with the drivers--some experienced screeching/squawking from their sound cards, and then the systme would lock up. I don't know if they ever got this worked out or not.

Edit: Found an old thread about it here (http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/threads/16047-Strange-freezing-issue-but-only-with-FFXI-(new-graphics-card-driver-issue-)). Not sure if what Jerji last tried fixed it or not though...no more posts after 12/28/2011.

Sorry for the delay. I been going through some troubleshooting with a friend of mine and still can't find the reason it freezes. At this point SE doesn't know what causes it and refuses to even figure it out. Tech support just says "oh well from the dxdiag report your computer seems fine so theres im not sure what you can do" just giving me bullshit. This game isn't worth messing up my computer and getting frustrated over shitty customer support. With that said I guess I wont be playing anymore, fuck this game.

Thanks to those that replied.

Sorry to hear that, but as stated earlier, it is an issue specifically with the 6900 series card, which SE has declared there is a compatibility issue. Until ATI fixes the driver issue, the only option known to resolve it is to use a different card.

Did a little googling, and apparently there is suspected incompatibility with Realtek audio integration through ATI's HD audio link (it may be other brands as well, just the Realtek on-board sound has been flagged specfically). Last post of this thread touches on what was done to remedy it:
