Okay, so I have been playing this game from the beginning, and I took a two year break to have kids and change jobs blah blah blah boring life stuff.

Anyway, my wife and I are both back and we are on Asura. I am in Windy and she is in Sandy. Basically, I want to make sure I picked the right server. I was hoping to find a server that was not a ghost town, and had a good mix of character levels. I haven't played enough on this server yet to get a feel for it. Does anyone have any advice for me? I know that this has been asked a lot, and I know that people are tired of hearing how much the game has declined over the last two or three years, but I really hope that SE keeps it running. I understand that it remains the dominate MMORPG in Japan and as such, I hope that that they never decide to take the servers down for good. Does anyone have a feel for that? And does anyone know of a good party group near Windy? /tell Braidyn in game and let me know.

Thanks!

The game isn't going anywhere. Numbers have dropped and servers have merged, but all that was to refocus attention on FFXIV, which was a complete flop. Currently, most servers are similar in that the majority of the playerbase are all levels 80-99 and primarily focus on Abyssea, trials and complaining about how terrible the game is when they run out of things to do, but it's not all that bad. Leveling is far easier and with all of the content, it's not like you'll ever be bored. The only issue I've noticed is the lack of camaraderie the game used to have (I blame Grounds of Valor for removing the need to party the old way and actually create a system for the party to work. Now everyone just goes /DNC) and places that were once known for entertaining drama are now silent. To be honest, I actually miss zoning into Lower Jeuno to watch everyone flame Smokeone. So long as you have someone to play with or talk to, its the same old game with a few new tricks

Is there a threat that the game will ever be shut down completely? I worry because it has and continues to be my favorite game and I would hate to see it die. And by die, I don't mean lack of content. I have a lot of content I haven't played in this game and it will be a number of years before I reach a point where I have nothing to do.... no, instead I mean die in as they pull the plugs and turn the power off. Does anyone thing that will actually happen?

Eventually? Probably. Not for a few more years at least.

Well, if it's any comfort, Everquest is still churning along and that's been around since 1999 and they still get updates and content. While things have slowed down here, there are rumors of new content coming. I think right now it's in a lull as they fix FFXIV, but as far as dying, I seriously doubt this game is going anywhere soon.

Currently, they are just rumors of things briefly mentioned here on this forum. Currently, SE is focusing most of its attention on restructuring the games "balance" due to the recent cap increase to 99. This includes new job abilities, timer adjustments for current abilities/spells, and retooling current battlefields like Voidwatch and Abyssea. Most of this information can be found here: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/forums/82-In-Development

What comes after that is only really known to the development team, but they tend to update the in-progress testing going on on the test server fairly often.

It would be great if they added more story elements.

Not that I can think of a realistic way to implement it, but I'm all for giving us access to the Battle of Tavnazia. In real time, the war would continue on forever, but I don't think that would matter too much since the great war from 20 years ago, according to the games own calender, was more like 900 years ago. You'd think we'd all be dead by now >.>

Would require a new time-altering method, as the people who've progressed enough through CoP have already witnessed its destruction.

However, there's still tons of lore that I'd like to explore. My personal favorite would be the west continent, because it sounds like more than just wilderness. Most people would vote for Mithran homeland, I believe, but I've had some taste with Windurst and Kazham and am personally not a big fan of the vibe it gives off. But still, I'd take what I could get, gladly, if they make another expansion in any direction.

There are a ton of places they could fill in. Aht Urhgan still feels incomplete. Anything is better than a recycled area. As long as its not another variation of Jugner Forest, I'm all for it.

I agree, that would be interesting. lol has it been that long in game time? 900 years?
