I'm guessing shutting down the servers pretty much pauses the entire game. Correct if wrong however, idk how it works.

To the OP: Yes, they do. On a negative side, your plants continue to grow and die also.

A good question. If the servers are offline, I would image that stones are not accruing. God, I hope I'm wrong! xD

I'm not sure if Vana'diel time stops or not when servers are down. If time keeps going then yea, we would accumulate stones but also we will log into an empty auction house and dead plants.

Pretty certain we will. As far as stones, I believe it is a time calculation from the reports of people's piles of stones growing as soon as they got the Celerity Abyssites. If they stones were pure accumulation, their stones would not have increased when they got the abyssite but simply would have grown from that point forward at a quicker rate.

Pretty sure the algorithm for stones is a date/time check retroactive to whenever you first got stones. t hats why celerity can retroactively reimburse stones

If the servers are down then yes all of FFXI's time has come to a screeching halt. No stone accumulation, but if they have a program to keep track of what the count was of your stones when the servers went down then it is possible to add them after the servers go back online.

With the Servers off of course the game is paused at the Time the servers Shutdown the software that Runs the Game server software. and stored a time and date to the last second when it happened. when the servers do come back online, (and if they do we habe no idea How close or far the server farm is from the damaged plant.) they will likely take a tad to fully come online as the servers will update stuff like stones AH items that will all expire, plants etc.
we have simply no idea How the Servers run in this aspect. the game could simply littlerraly be in an "Suspended state" (thing a emulators save state) they could do an update and recalculate stuff like abyssea stones. etc but think. if the radioation disaster worsens .. and the server farm is too close and teh area's sealed. then we've unwittingly seen the Last of FFXI and teh early demise to XIV.
All we can do is hope and wait

I'm guessing the game's time is bound to sysclock. Otherwise, when servers were down in the past for big updates and such, the vanadiel clock products would get out of synch with the game time. With some of the changes they've made in the past, core services have had to be taken down for the game, so there would have been some slight time slips over the years, which I have yet to see happen.
Once the servers come up and the sysclock is updated with the BIOS and/or Atomic Clock synchronization (guessing the OS synchs to something like the Naval Observatory or something--if it's a Windows Server it's programmed to do that), then the vanadiel calender will be back in synch and when you check stones it will recalculate and you will get your extras.

vana time is based off earth time and that hasnt stopped
Vanatime = (UTCEpoch + 91270800) * 25;

totally agree! i would rather have 21 stones (per week) plus than some plants who yield with me every now and then 5 stack of shell bugs !_!
but my plants will keep their selves alive for about a month :D so im good =)

If you clock up a load of stones cos of the servers being off spare a thought for me... My four day old Chocobo chick will have gone from capped affection to hating the very ground I tread!!!

Pretty certain too that S/E may decide, and certainly can decide to make it as though time stopped when the servers went down. They haven't done that in the past. But this is so drastic that they may decide that is the best route to go. I don't know how hard that is. But, bending 'reality' is certainly a choice you have in the virtual world. It would also, most likely, ruin all the app's that are based off the Vana'Diel clock.
Its being considered partial maintenance so I would assume that time is still going on and when you get on everything in the AH will be in your MH your plants will be dead but you will have more stones..

I would imagine that the stones are accumulating because when we had that really long (12ish hr?) maint that we could not log onto POL at all (just like now) i logged back in and had more stones then i had the previous day. Also i'm sure they can reset your chocobo chick if you're really that desperate, just like they do if they for some reason have to recover your account.

the servers whent Physically Offline (No Power) they were in Maintice mode (Logins disabled and the world software undergoing changes, ) here the servers are Powered Off.

Besieged is halted, I believe during maint. I know that the mobs progress is slowed when the servers come back up, also.

Like the server being on or off matter? I am sure its all just a time/date check and math. Its not like the game increases a counter for you every X hours. That is a huge waste.

Hard to say to be honest. When SE does maintence, they don't "shut down" the servers perse unless they're fixing a hardware issue. Most of the time maintence would be fixing ingame issues like bugs or resetting or rolling back the servers which the servers are not officially turned off, so the servers intenral clock is pretty much always running. However the servers are completely shut down now and depending on how the servers and the game is built and configured, time in vanadiel may have totally froze.

FFXI AND FFXIV date and time are related to RL they cant stop time. they can shut down ther servers . but when the servers are repowerd up they will read the curret date and time and set final fantasy acordingly. your going to lose your plants. and your ah items will return to you. no big deal. and youll have X amount of stone acumlaated. time waits for no man not even SE. it wont be the first time the servers have been down or moved or repaired or replaced and yet time still passed. SE dont care if u have 1 item or 3 million items on the AH.

They have made several changes in the past that would REQUIRE a system reboot, and there was no time slip (networking changes for example--in the past year, I have come a cross a new subnet in the mix). So it is likely that it is in fact bound to the CMOS clock ultimately.
So much of this "game" is likely a database with a front end that collects data, runs calculations, then spits data back out. With all that going on, I seriously doubt they have a routine that increments a seperate clock when they can just query the sysclock at will with a simple statement, than apply the previoulsy posted formula to the result. It's a helluva lot easier to basically get time from the OS when needed then to set up a seperate program to increment a value in the database every second for them to fetch when needed.
Raist
Edit: and I doubt a GM could answer that question. This is something at the core of the programming-- something they don't have access too, and I expect few have much (if any) real knowledge of. They basically only work within a limited scope of tools for moderating gameplay in real-time. Everything else is forwarded to another department.
