View Full Version : Shut up about the servers.

I can't believe some people, One of the biggest disasters has occured in Japan and all you people can say is 'I don't see why I should suffer!' and 'Well there's no reason to be down for that long!', SE shut down the servers to help the power station in Japan which is on the verge of a nuclear meltdown, if you don't know the consequences of that then you clearly need to go back to school.
This is a game, Peoples lives are far more important then you levelling a job or obtaining pixels for your virtual character. If you can't go without a game for at least a week, then you have a serious problem.
And to the people who are trolling over this. You're just as pathetic.

I didn't read it like that. I'm pretty sure he was mentioning threads like the 'why the earthquake happened in japan,' which was a clear attempt to troll people.
I agree with OP, but trolls aren't going to care that you've called them out on their trolling, and making a whole new thread about it seems unnecessary.

This kind of holier-than-thou bullshit is sickening. Where were you when the Earthquake struck Haiti? I bet you were playing FFXI, weren't you? Hypocrites.

lol....
Well i can see both sides.
I"m a little annoyed at the servers being shut down also, i'm not going to lie. Is it awful what happened in Japan? You bet - and if this is actually going to help things then i'm all for it, but I don't see how it would. Square Enix also has a responsilbity to their global fanbase as well, as it's an international company, so they need to take their full clientale into account. I assume they took these balances into concern.
I live near two huge rivers, which flooded couple years back leaving me without power and water for over a week. Shutting down game servers woudn't have helped me a bit, and I really don't understand how doing this in Japan is going to help either. Everyone around those nuclear plants you speak of has already been evacuated. Those plants are already inoperable and not producing any energy, and if anything, shutting down the game for so many japaneese players who probably could use an escape from a reality now more than ever may not have been the wisest thing to do. And I really do doubt taking down the FF11 servers for a week is going to make any real difference what so ever with the problems japan is having right now. But as always, i could be wrong.

Yep. Completely hypocritical. Oh wait, no it's not. The server's haven't gone down just because of the disaster, they have gone down because in doing so they may provide vital energy needed to save lives, power resources and help speed up recovery.
If you put your own personal enjoyment over the well being of an entire country then you just might be a sociopath.
I also don't think anyone is claiming that if the servers weren't up that they wouldn't be playing, instead they are just stating that they are ok with the servers being down. I have done the exact same things I did with the Haitian earthquake, donated an amount of money and gotten on with my life. I am, unfortunately, powerless to do otherwise.
The FFXI servers aren't in Haiti. If they were, I would have been ok with them going down then too.

I think some people should turn on the tv with your down time from ffxi and watch the news. FFXI was NOT shut down because of the earthquake. FFXI was NOT shut down because of the tsunami.
FFXI WAS shut down because with power plants being down, and very close to a nuclear meltdown, the country is not running with even close to the electrical power as usual. They are having rolling blackouts to help conserve what power they do have, and thier government asked EVERYBODY to conserve energy. FFXI is not more important than anybody else in Japan who has to conserve.
or would you rather have FFXI stay up, so when the rolling blackout hits them, it crashes thier servers, possibly damaging them. Or maybe if FFXI stayed online, they could just bypass them and have the rolling blackouts hit the hopitals instead.
(I appologize for adding to this debate in a thread asking to stop it. I am just getting very tired of people who have no sympathy for what is going on in the world. And before somebody says "I wasnt complaining" if you weren't complaining, this wasnt meant for you)

I have no doubt S/E wishes their servers were up. They need money flowing into the country. Also, as someone who has been through a disaster, the only thing that kept me going was I had a job to do. As soon as the crisis was over, I was sicker than a dog. So, I'm sure some of their employees wish the servers were up also. To have some normalcy in their lives.
So, the fact that S/E chose to close the servers means they felt it necessary, for whatever reason. They are losing revenue and incurring costs at the same time. Businesses don't take that lightly. So, for anyone to assume that S/E made a bad decision closing the servers or feels that S/E needs to hurry up and re-open them, does not understand that S/E has made a decision to lose money when they most will need it. They don't need business advice or whining while the very structures, literally and socially, are collapsing all around them.

Ok well then answer me this. If conserving power was so crucial to people's survival, why havn't they shut down the servers operating these forums yet?

Forums such as this can be run off a PC in your house. Do you know how much energy it takes to run the game servers? Also I'm not even sure if the forums or the POL site are run on a server in Japan, maybe thye are, or maybe they were able to move them to a server in California. And before you ask, there is a big difference between moving forums to a different server and moving all the game servers.

Implementation plan of rolling blackout on and after Tue, March 15, 2011 (http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/press/corp-com/release/11031406-e.html)
(press release from power company)
REGARDLESS OF SOCIAL/POLITICAL/ECONOMIC DEBATE, THIS HAD TO BE DONE TO PRESERVE THE DATA, PURE AND SIMPLE.
No matter what anyone thinks/feels/wants... this would have been forced upon them anyway. They HAVE to maintain the integrity of the data. Even IF they had a failover network running on their own private network, eventually the forest would have fallen out of synch with servers and Network devices in various zones shutting down for 3 hours at a time. From a shear technical/practical point of view, it just was not a good idea to keep them up and risk everything going FUBAR with the game.
This is going to be a problem until at LEAST Friday night in the US time frame. We just have to sit tight and wait for an announcement from SE. They just had more explosions at the power plant ffs, and radiation levels are increasing at the site. Until they can stabilize the environment, they have to focus on ESSENTIAL needs for the community, which means various manufacturing sites and things like SE have to shut down services.
Give it time people.

You're being incredibly ignorant about the whole situation. You're suggesting that Square enix has more of a responsibility to keep the server online to appease a relatively small amount of players over providing even the smallest relief on a strained energy crisis. Watch the news. It's bad. It's much worse than our collective craving to play a game.

And the Japaneese players probably do need an escape from reality at the moment. I know i sure would if a tsunami just swept across my house. That's not an excuse, just an observation. I'm confused.
How is SE responsible for my entertainment?
If we were employee's for SE and we just went through a disaster such as the one they did, would you rather be sitting in an office with the power going out every few hrs to make sure people can play a video game, or would you rather spend time with your family, make sure loved one are ok, or do what you can do to help your neighbors?
So to say they hold responsibility for our enjoyment is BS. They are responsible to their families first. You dont mean anything to them during these times.
And the same would be said if the roles were reversed.

Well I mean on a personal level. As a business, they also have to put their employees into the equation.
And they're culture is a tad more family oriented than that of NA. I speak of the bulk and not people as individuals when i make that claim.
And I know for me, when I'm not in work, I dont care or think about work. I'm not getting paid to. There's a time and place for everything, and right now, is not XI's nor the user base's time.
Be patient and it will be shortly.
