View Full Version : Chocobo Race (Free Runs) freezing/hanging up

I tried e-mailing about this and got no help, and I can't get to chat support. So here I am.

I play FFXI on a Playstation 2.

Every once in a while, when I run a free run of a chocobo race, the cutscene of the race will freeze on the spectators watching the race. It won't switch back to the chocobos running. I have to force a shut down of my console when this happens. When I log back in and try to re-run the race, the same thing happens again and again, and it won't stop. I usually have to wait until the next day to continue racing, hoping it won't happen again.

It mainly seems to be whenever I am about to WIN a race. I ran five races in a row, getting second place in all of them, and finally I got to one where I was winning, and it froze. As you can imagine, this is extremely frustrating because I never get my chocobucks for winning a race, now.

It will still happen now and again to those that I'm going to win second place, but it's most common for first place victory races. I don't want this to be happening if I run an official race.

I'm assuming something is wrong with the particular file involved in that race cutscene, but I have no idea how to fix it.

Thank you.

I tried tightening my network adapter since it was a little loose and it still didn't help anything. It's still happening. Is there a way I can check/repair FFXI files?

Am I going to have to reinstall?

EDIT: I found the File Repair and discovered the game had some corrupted files. I repaired them and ran another race, and instead of freezing, it just crashed to a black screen this time. If this is a hardware problem I would really like to know. I'd really like some advice or some suggestions or something.

Please?

Edit 2: Problem persists if I plug ethernet directly into the modem instead of my router. I've been reading that other people are having this exact same problem. These problems did not exist a few years ago when I used to play before. I came back less than a few days ago to a bunch of bugs. I heard it's not just PS2 either.

It happens when I talk to certain NPCs, too. I heard that other people have this problem as well. Looks as if it's been going on for months with no fix.

Called technical support about it. He told me to open a port range, so I did. The problem continued.

I made myself a static IP address. Still happens.

If I log back in after forcing a shut down, zone, log out, then back in again, it will "skip" the race for me and allow me to run another, and even gives me the chocobucks I was supposed to earn. I suppose this will do as a temporary solution.

At the moment, on the ps2 client there are numerous things that will either hang for a long period of time, or freeze altogether. As for chocobo racing, that happened to me last night, but after letting it hang for a couple minutes it continued
