View Full Version : What to do while Final Fantasy XI is down.

First of all I would like to offer my condolences to those affected by the recent Tsunami and Earthquake.

So the server for playonline and Final Fantasy XI are down.
Which I'm surprised it did not happen sooner.

So what to do in place of Final Fantasy XI?
Post your ideas here.

Well I've got this planed for the coming week/s.

Work on my website.
Use my ps3 to play games rather than a DVD, on-demand TV.
Deep Clean my Room.
Work on some PHP Projects.

I was thinking of trying out another MMO which has got a free trial, but I don't know which ones there are.

Personally, I don't think they should have shut the servers down. Call me insensitive, but tragedies happen every day yet we all ignore them and spend our time complaining that we can't get the empress hairpin to drop. If the Japanese can't be disciplined enough to conserve their own electricity, why should we have to suffer for it? That is something I'd expect from my fellow Americans, not a supposedly smarter society like the Japanese. If SE really wanted to prevent people logging on from Japan, it seems like they could block certain IP addresses or something.

A whole week. I might have to do something drastic... like omg read a book or something!

on-demand TV.
Deep Clean my Room.

Pretty much this, except replace on demand tv with Netflix and add some video gaming.

I don't think you're understanding the entire issue here. Japan lost two nuclear reactors, and might also have lost some of the undersea electricity cables from the mainland. Japan is an island nation, it is much harder to import electricity than it is for countries on the mainland. There simply isn't enough electricity produced in japan to keep every company's servers online all the time.

It is not to keep japanese players from playing, it is because SE themselves aren't allocated enough power to keep them running 24/7. Last thing I heard, there were controlled rolling blackouts all over the country, so that everything that wasn't a critical function like a hospital only was given electricity for a certain period per day.

S-E might have enough backup generators to keep a few servers online (such as the web servers and this forum), but probably not enough to keep the dozens of servers that are running FF11 and FF14 online without external power.

This is however off-topic, and the issue has been discussed to death in a number of other threads already.

I have a 2nd interview for a really good job on Monday or Tuesday, so I have that to look forward to. I may also go and purchase Pokemon Black/White (haven't decided yet) and start working on that too.

I may also goof off on FF13 on the PS3. I've yet to totally fill the Crystarium on my completed game and I'm nowhere close to being able to fight the really cool NMs like that big Cactuar, etc. etc.

In a new house so plenty to do:
* Check/Repair Wiring
* Yard Work
* Organize and Clean House/Room
* General Maintenance
.
.
.

Outside of that:
* Go to Movies (Some really good ones out there right now)
* Might play some Perfect World International (Similar to WoW but free w/ Cash Shop)
* 3hr Doctors appointment monday!
* Visit Friends (haven't seen me in about 2months - omg has it been that long since I seen them? FFXI = Addiction)
* Maybe go play some pool with my grandfather.

I'm sure i can stay busy.. or just sleep the days away =p

I went fishing today for the first time in 10 years. As I was pulling up a fish, one of the fishing songs from XI popped into my head. It was a nice diversion from things however. Other than that, I have a few other games in my backlog thanks to FFXI. A friend of mine has been bugging me to play WoW with him, but I never played it past the mid-30s and that was years ago. We shall see.

LOL, oh, I'm sorry for laughing. But it's funny how many of us have FFXI so engraved in our lives, that it follows us into the real world. I worry when withdrawal kicks in.

Looks like today I've done nothing but be in the forums. Eh, Day 1 has been very fun nonetheless.

Nah, don't be sorry. Oddly enough, I only fished maybe a handful of times in-game. "There is always something there to remind me!"

The last couple hours of uptime were spent with my LS rounding up Briareus pops and getting myself a few helms. We meant to do one more, but one guy with a pop disappeared on us and it got to be around 4AM.

Honestly, I think is crazy to shut down FF11. They could have been smart and setup central centers in each country incase of things like this. Just because 1 country has problems doesn't mean they should make everyone else that plays suffer. Im not saying this to be mean, but we pay them monthly, so they should have come up with ideas, and ways to keep certain areas up and running in events like this. Californa is already home to many other MMO's and they could have, or if they do, set up a server to run there. Its just a suggestion, but SE could get their ducks in a run and figure out a way to keep service to the countless that spend their money on this game. Japan has their problems, and our country has its, but you don't see japan suspending their games bc of katrina, or any other major event that happens over here.

I'm sure when they are able to recover successfully, they will think of ways to prevent this from happening again. Humans aren't perfect, nor are they prepared for everything.

First, I have to get off my chest the weird feeling this has; it doesn't feel like a temporary maintanence. I don't have any doubt about the game coming back in a timely fashion, it's just... Loading the POL viewer and then trying to connect feels like nothing's even trying-no morse code-like sounds or anything. It all behaves the way they will twenty or thirty years from now, with the game still ghostily installed on my old computer when the game is down for good, and it(and possibly XIV by then, too)-one of my favorite installments of the entire series-will be the only FF I can't still play.

... But I guess I'll just do what I normally do when not on FF11: School, work, and real life level grinding. And with spring break in effect and minimal extra hours at work, I may gain an entire level this week alone!

I bought Rift.

Yesterday, because I foresaw the servers shutting down. I wanted the game to be installed by the time they did.

Downloading: 8.3 kb/s. Time remaining: 136 hours.

This is after 30 hours.

When I check my connection speed it's supposed to be 4.36mb/s. So something is wrong with Trion. Sad face.

Anyway, in the meantime I'm reading about Japan and making myself depressed.

I'm hoping the death count stays at what is now, and doesn't raise up anymore, but from the reports I'm reading.... It's not looking good at all. And I'm not saying those that did die isn't a loss, it's a ****ing **** ton of people dead and it's a horrible, horrible tragedy. And it makes me teary eyed to read news stories about it. I just really hope it doesn't get worse.

I know I plan to spend more time on these forums and ffxiah.com, doing housework and of course gaming. Made a New Year's Gaming Resolution to play my backlog (15 games, thanks FFXI...) and I'm still working on Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, with Dragon Age II coming sometime this week from Amazon (more distraction from the backlog!). Spring break is this week as well which means no work (being a substitute teacher is interesting sometimes) so lots of free time and no FFXI. Really though, at least I got my Redemption to level 85 before they shut the servers down.

To prevent what? Giant earthquakes? This is the first time this has happened in 7 and a half years, and it happened due to extraordinary circumstances. It doesn't seem like it would be cost effective to set up and run redundant servers to prevent a week or two of total downtime once every 7 and a half years.

It's quite unpleasant to read some of the selfish comments in regards to how NA players are feeling they are suffering for the tradegy of one Country. Of course Japan did not shut servers down due to Hurricane Katrina. You have to remember they are a much smaller country then we are & Hurricane Katrina effected the South Eastern Coast. In the US almost every state has a major source of energy that it feeds from & I do not think any nuclear reactors exploded when that Hurricane hit (least I think). One thing great about the US is we are actively working on getting people back up an going after a major incident. However in respect to the home nation of the Company who developed XI I would think we as players could put aside our selfish comments & be more understanding to the reason that SE is cooperating with the Japanese Government & is willing to do anything to help. Remember we are not an American Game developed to be played worldwide like wow is (because wow invested the money to hosting servers globally, & I am sure they are paying a nice amount to do so). I am sure it would be very costly for SE a company dependant on serveral franchise for income (and is not as well financed as Activision, remember the company that formerly owned blizzard was bought out by Activision) thought it best not to invest the money on global servers especially during this economy.

To those of you who find it crazy, unfair of SE, & are genuinely upset about not playing a game (in which if you see the positive you are not paying for April's service), I hope you feel better tonight knowing that Thousands of Lives were lost this past week. Several Hundred are still missing & there are Americans with family in Japan who have not even heard a word if their loved ones are ok, but yes SE please keep your servers running so you can playing you MMO & screw saving power to keep the hospitals going, I need abbysea tonight!

Playing the 7 day Free trial of WoW. I just hope that FFXI isn't more than a week down or I'll get too involved in WoW. While I understand that there is no power to run the servers, it surprises me that there isn't a back up server in the States, considering the amt of players in other countries and the technology out there. If they don't get the Nuclear powerplants under control, they are going to have far greater problems on their hands. Which means we won't be playing XI for a really long time.

Yes but think of this as a business (which it is) there was 1,800 players online that day on my server alone alot of them where japanese so some dont realy care about the power consumtion if they where they wouldn't have been playing the game. We all got billed this month for the game. WE payed for there service which they cut us all off from, Not cus they had too but they wanted too. With out our consent. Those 1,800 paid there bill thats 12.95 from each of those ppl thats up 23310$ Just from my server alone, Not counting the other servers. They should rent a generator not like there useing the power on the server they got alot of money from us and now its like there takeing it and running. Business is Business This might make alot of ppl quit. They should refund our money or move the server's to another place for the time being.

Sorry to double post, but we're not being billed all of April to make up for this one week.

Please read the announcements before rudely accusing Square Enix of being money-greedy mongrels. Thank you.

I was checking out a bunch of MMORPG's yesterday, but nothing really stands out. I downloaded the free trial of Guild Wars, you get a whole 10 hours of playtime :( I guess I am spoiled in that FFXI and FFXIV are the only MMO's I have ever played. Everything else out there doesn't seem to compare. I hate to get involved in WoW, because I have a feeling that this shutdown in FFXI will last a lot longer than a week unless they set up some servers elsewhere. If it takes a few months or more, then you could really get involved with something else and may not come back.

If you get too involved with WoW in just a week, maybe you shouldn't come back to ffxi. :p

That's why so many play WoW, you can get a char and crafts maxed in like 3 days.

What do I have planned? Hmm...

Well, I cosplay a little, so I might get some sewing done. O.o (I'm thinking of making either SMN or BLU AF for a future project...fun stuff!)
I might also work a bit on the book I'm planning on publishing soon. Then there's grocery shopping, heading to the movies (assuming there's anything good in theatres), shopping for computer parts...I'll be busy o_o;

I found my old copy of FF8, the computer version.

Yeah. I actually bought that.

So, I figure it'll take me a week or so to get it to work in Windows 7 64-bit. Or I could just go back to grinding Prishe up to a reasonable level in Dissidia 012.

Also, scrounging for food, storing water, and weathering the rolling blackouts that Tokyo is forecasted. Fun stuff!

I start looking around for bombs every time it's foggy out.

I think I'll finally finish the storyline of FF XII.

I took this free time to fix my broken laptop (which i thought had a broken video card but apparently was a vista driver issue). But as my hobbys are mainly FF -> Anime > Manga i am particularly blocked. I did have a look at the Square enix website and browsed around the goodies (I recommend the Cloud Poster, no Aeris or Zack Available :( )
I'm hoping the release for FF Dissidia Duodecim will not be postponed as it will give me something to do, should this downtime be extended.

I also noticed Square Enix has several good Anime's like Pandora Hearts , so I'm going to look further into that as well.

I'm on a week break this week and had full plans of taking advantage of it to level some low level jobs before the merger of the server, and found my plans changed....So I came up with new plans. I'm teaching my daughter how to cook. We now have a menu made for the whole week of things she wants to try to make. In between that, I think I'll finally finish all my games I never finished. FF12 and 13, Dragon Age Awakenings, Lost Odyssey, and all that rot.

I just got back from an anime convention yesterday and was really surprised to find the game down, lol. I've yet to finally get access to the bonus dungeon in Tales of the Abyss and still working on a secondary file for Tales of Legendia. probably gonna restart my profile for Infinite Undiscovery because I've reached a point I can't pass due to lacking in training my characters.

After watching the news I'm aware of that Tokyo runs like normal: work, commute, shopping... I myself do not understand how a few servers can help but who knows. I believe SE made the right move I just hope FF won't be down for too long.

Without FFXI, my next week is going to go something like this:

Get 5000 pages of fiction written for my senior seminar in fiction
Play God Eater Burst
Find an internship for the summer/fall

Although to be honest, these are things that I needed to get done anyhow. If nothing else, this gives me a chance to begin a love affair with God Eater now that I can actually read the text.

Everquest 2 is free to play and is better than WoW in a lot of ways ( my highest char is 64 Shadowknight on free server Name: Masamune - for those who wish to test it out send me a tell sometime)

Their is also Gunz online a 3rd person tactical shooter game with unique gameplay compared to most shooter based games ( http://gunz.ijji.com ) ( IGN: Chrissm )

Guild wars... Global Agenda... Dungeons and Dragons online... Watch some anime... go get laid.... drink a beer.... sit down on the couch and say.... " awwhh... thats the spot "

What am I gonna do during the week the servers are down? Toss and turn because all I can think about is ffxi :/ Why? Because I've been gone from the game since 2 weeks after the first level cap increase from 75. I was so far over my ffxi withdrawal too, and of course, the bartender next door (i live next to a bar) brings up how he can't play his favorite game because the servers are down in Japan (go figure, it was ffxi, shocked the hell out of me, didn't think anyone with a 50 mile radius of me played it :/). So now, I'm writhing in the hell that is ffxi addiction (it apparently never goes away). My only reprieve being that I found a torrent for Plants vs Zombies but, I've already beaten it (in a day). *rocks back in forth in the corner*

Game is soooo boring LOL. If you like a good story with your MMOs then leave WoW alone.

No seriously thought there's quest grinding and PVP. I only got to 73(got tired of it) but I think the big appeal of that game is PVP and I don't think you can do the large scale PVP areas until around level 30. You can start doing dungeons in parties 5 with other players(even if they are not on your server) at level 15.

I just canceled my account but damn I am so bored right now. I think I may actually log back in and play it while FF XI is down. My subscription doesn't end until the 24th.

I have 3 80 wow toons i discontinued right before cata came out. Its fun to kill people but once you get lvled up enough to raid, its pretty boring and once a week shot at drops against all those people in raid makes FFXI old hnm system look tame. Ended up spending most of my time herb gathering all week between raids and it got old really fast. Weee kill heroic lk then rest of week was flying around zones looking for lichblooms lol. They've released new content since then, but it still wasnt enough to make me renew my subscription to play

Niklz

Well... I just had my first ffxi withdrawal dream, which consisted of fighting off a level 87 Besieged... (I have no idea where 87 came from...) Congratulations Siren, even in our wildly unscaled dreams we're still undefeated.
