View Full Version : Audio Mute - Request

Maybe this is in the game already somewhere. If so, somebody please enlighten me.

Normally, I like to have the game audio on while I play as it adds to the overall environment. However, I'd love to have a quick access mute function to quickly turn off all the game audio for those times when I want to listen to something else on my PC. The only way I know of doing this in the game now is to go through the config menu and turn down sound effects and music independently, which is annoyingly slow. How about /mute to toggle sound on and off?

If you use windows 7 then right click your audio speaker by the clock and click "Open Volume Mixer"

Then when it is open right click the Volume Mixer icon down at the bottom of your screen where all the program icons are and pin to toolbar.

Now whenever you want to mute FFXI just click that and click the icon in the volume mixer to instantly mute it!

As above- this functionality is a part of modern versions of windows.

It won't mute all of the programs.

But, it'd be nice for PS2, XBox360, and players not on Windows 7.

I'm sorry but Kalilla's directions will indeed mute all of your programs completely.

Just opened up volume mixer, muted FFXI, and I can still hear my CD in Media.

Tagrineth, if you're going to throw around "reading comprehension" I would suggest you learn a little more about computers before doing so.

Windows 7's built in Volume Mixer (the directions I just told you...) has the power to mute specific programs, even JUST FFXI. It will NOT mute your entire system.

By clicking the program's speaker icon in Volume Mixer it is marked with a http://kalilla.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/no.png sign which mutes the program.

And Meyi you are correct, so that would be a nice request now that you mention that.

Eh... whatever. That's still a very ghetto method to do it, and exclusive to Win7

Reading comprehension! We didn't say mute the whole PC! We said mute the individual application, which is possible from the windows audio mixer!

Please make sure you fully understand what is being discussed before calling other people stupid (effectually).

Eh... whatever. That's still a very ghetto method to do it, and exclusive to Win7 Yes, its exclusive to an operating system you should be running. Skipping Vista was understandable, but XP will eventually (is already?) not be supported by MS anymore. This isn't a "ghetto method,' either. It's easy an convenient, and often used to silence applications like your web browser which often don't have volume controls of their own at all.

(Side note; if using "unofficial windower", it will silence the game while it is minimized, which is even simpler than finding an ingame mute checkbox)

lol, if you get IndieVolume you can even do it on XP too if you have to stick with the OS...

I believe that I read somewhere that MS is actually beginning to stop giving support for office products on XP.

Even if that isn't true they definitely don't sell XP software anymore.

Hush bro. Not everyone has money to afford a new computer. I got lucky and I'm damn thankful my father was willing to buy me a computer with Windows 7 for my birthday, but not everyone has money just lying around to throw into a new computer. Need to be less judgmental.

Maybe if it just came out two years ago...

XP = Aug 2001
Vista = Nov 2006
7 = July 2009
8 = mid 2012

I see no reason why you can't save up 50-100 dollars a year and in 10 years get a new pc...

Microsoft is ending support for XP on April 8th, 2014.

Thanks for the Windows 7 tip. That should work for me. Not so much for those on other OS's. According to Gartner, the penetration rate of W7 should reach 42% by the end of the year. That's a lot of XP out there (granted, most of that stat will be enterprise which likely is overwhelmingly still on XP). Then, of course, there are the console versions.

But really, is it so hard to implement in the game itself?

Ingame just goto Config > gameplay > move soundfx slider to 0. Takes about 5 seconds, I know it would be nice to have a mute button but really it's not that bad right now.

FFXI has a function in config that lowers the sound to music volume and gameplay.

It's not only for Windows 7/Vista, btw., can do with Linux too! :b
As well as with other Windows versions, as mentioned, but indeed it would be a welcome addition for the game itself.

Yes.

It takes almost 10 seconds per slider and it doesn't work perfectly, nor does it affect Calls or the title screen in any way.

By doesn't work perfectly I mean.. ever play the game with the volume sliders all the way down while wearing a headset?

Yes I have, and it's horrible. Try fishing, the music changes with every bite.

I would love a mute feature just because of fishing, no matter if the sliders are down all the way I still hear the bursts of music every time I get a bite and release/catch it.
