Okay, I'll start:

1: To transport servers overseas, find housing, find staff and go through all the paperwork necessary to set up shop would be exorbitantly expensive for a 1-3 week (guessing) downtime.

2: Any resources (specifically time, energy and manpower) that could be used for server transport is better suited to a rescue/recovery effort.

3: You get a week off, and can't play a video game. That counts as "down the drain"?

4: Running a game like Final Fantasy XI isn't as simple as just hooking up a bunch of computers to a generator.

The game has been down for about 12 hours now, and people are already freaking out. Relax.

Getting the game back up isn't really a priority right now. Some think it should be. It isn't. Bare necessities are coming first. When Japan recovers to where it is safe to return to regular living, they'll get back to business.

Easier to set up a secondary server in their american based office. It's already there, already staffed, etc.

I think there are actually about 700 servers that run FFXI... 20 main servers (like Alexander, Shiva, etc) and 35 secondary servers per main server (these handle 1-3 zones each - like La Theine, Whitegate, etc)... then there are also servers that handle the auction house, search functions, playonline, and so on...

Yeah, this thread is a jerk move. Seriously, do you only care about your precious FF, instead of how much Japan is suffering, and grieving about their losses? Just imagine that that happened here in the USA, and your family was killed. Would you think of FF only then?

People needs to stop bashing Japan and stop thinking about themselves. Japan is grieving and suffering. Please, have some courtesy towards those that are in pain.
