With the weeks downtime may there be the hope that they may have the time and inclination to do the server merge and major update patch while we are all offline for a week. No one will be able to ninja create accounts and we have the downtime albeit not the most fortunate of reasons or circumstances but lets hope that some small plus can come out of this.

While a good idea in theory, they turned off the servers to conserve power. Updating them, and getting all the data and whatnot together probably would use up the power that they're trying to save. Not as much as having the servers on full time, mind you, but it still doesn't jive with their original reasoning for shutting the thing off in the first place.

Well, yes. But you have to consider that if japan is in power-save mode, they might not have the best of opportunities to work on the server merges either. If they don't want to use power to keep servers up, maybe they don't want to use power on testing and performing the maintenance stuff either. I don't know, but I guess we can hope.

The best would be if Japan got the power issues sorted out again real fast (not just for the servers, but for the entire country). Hopefully they can sort out some deals with other countries to sell them more electricity. I would think Japan also has got undersea power cables, let's hope they weren't severed by the earthquakes.

Its not like they actually put the server down to all go on holiday and drink cocktails with tiny umbrellas .
Whole Japan has now plain other issues then keepin a game runnin for the rest of the world , i myself hope game comes back soon , but i can understand any time they need to get their real life , their houses , their familys save , fixed and back to a tiny bit of normality .

the servers are scheduled fro a week shut down so was just a hope that if they had sufficient power by day 5 for example maybe they could implement it as a surprise as Japan is a very powerful and wealthy nation I wouldn't be surprised if they had most of it cleaned up and running before 7 days.

Even if they are wealthy, it takes time and man-power to get the electric grid back up and running as before. There is probably a limited amount of people who are certified to work with that sort of equipment.

I can't see it happen for the reasons already stated above about power conservation.

Also, wasn't the whole point of warning us about the server mergers in advance partly so we could empty out our inboxes and auction houses? I'm pretty sure people are not ready for the merge in this way right now. Not everyone got the message in game or offline before the servers went down. If the mergers happen while the servers are down this week (or longer), lots of money and items will be lost, and honestly... people WILL complain, a lot. So it sounds like a bad move. And anyway, character creation is down for the affected servers, so no one can ninja create new characters.

Anyway, I really do think they have much better things to do in this downtime than to work on updates and mergers.

Another good point. If they did the server merge now without us being able to clear out our AHs and inboxes, lots of items could go missing.

Well, not for me, my server isn't gonna get merged (this time)

forgot about this point well taken :( my server isn't in the merge mix so thought past my mind.... and doubt they give us an update without the merge at same time :(

Even though they can not work online for testing ideas for the update, they can still think about stuff off-line. I would hope that the Dev team has enough people on it that know if this or that idea would be able to be done with current game specs ect.

To avoid possible massive blackouts in the areas, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said it will conduct from Monday an unprecedented planned rationing of power in its service area that covers Tokyo, Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Saitama, Tochigi, Yamanashi and part of Shizuoka prefectures.

The measure would last until the end of April, TEPCO officials said, while adding that it plans to exclude from the areas subject to the measure the central Tokyo area where the country's core functions exist.

Sounds like servers will be down much longer than 7 days.
