View Full Version : Petition To Have S/E Add a Donation "Add-On" to PoL
Randwolf
03-13-2011, 10:50 PM
As many players are very appreciative of S/E's suspension of billing, most would not mind paying their monthly bill to assist S/E, since operating costs do not disappear during a crisis.
For that reason, we are requesting that S/E place on the services purchasing screen the option to pay our April bill.
We are also requesting that there be an "Add-On" to purchase titled "Donation to the Japanese Relief Fund" (or another appropriate name). The monies collected by this "Add-On" could be used entirely at the discretion of S/E to help their 'distressed' employees or Japan, as a whole.
Signed,

I would love to donate my April's bill and would very much like if I could do it with a "FFXI players all over the world support the country that gave us so many hours of fun" kind of funding instead of a generic donation to the red-cross or other organizations. I would really appreciate that all the Japan ppl could know that the FFXI fanbase is with them and will support them.

While the servers are down if they added a button we couldn't get the update that has said button until the servers are back online (could be a week, I'm expecting much longer). I do however support the idea, moreso in the form of a link/button on the website and/or forum. Either way you still get my signature.

Even after the servers come back up, there will still be a need for donations. For many, FFXI is their main connection to Japan. There's always a little extra in that good feeling of donating when there is a personal connection.

First off, you're losing sight of the fact that Square-Enix is a for-profit company, not a charity. On top of that, they are an entertainment company, about as far as producing an essential as you can get. Your money would be better spent directly on an actual charitable organization.
Second, the servers are down because their employees and their communities have more pressing needs than this. And you want them to take the time to do the research on reputable charitable organizations (and the legal research for navigating the liabilities and obligations for making such a link), all because you're too lazy to go out and do it yourself?
You all could have made donations to the ICRC or the Salvation Army or so forth in the time it took you to browse and post on this forum.
Call me cold-hearted, but I'm disgusted by this. If you actually cared, you'd do it yourself.

i agree and hope that will read this thread sometime in the next couple weeks. which they may not get around to due to the current crisis but i think that taking the april monthly fee and donating to the relief fund is an amazing way for the community to help out. SE has been pretty good to us over the yrs. and this would be a great way for us to help them out in this time of need. if it wasnt for them this community of players wouldnt exist so lets give back to them. they gave us a game and a way to make friends worldwide. lets repay them and help out the nation

I wouldn't call you cold-hearted. I'd say you were unrealistic and ill-informed about fund-raising.
If you want people to give to a cause, you don't wait for them to decide to do so on their own. You make the opportunity to give as convenient as possible.
You also give them a personal connection to the 'cause.' If you want an example, the United Way has campaigns that reach into business where people sign-up to have deductions made one-time or from each pay check. Talk about convenient. Charitable causes also use celebrities because people feel a connection, real or not, to them. Why do you think you see all those stars on television soliciting donations?
You think that S/E has no interest, even as a for-profit company, in helping its country? That one has me baffled.
So, yes, if people ran out and gave of their own volition, it would be marvelous. But, S/E allowing the opportunity to give both makes it easy and provides a real connection (be it a real, virtual connection) to the people of Japan. On top of that, when the servers come up, people who already gave may determine it is within their means to give again.

About a minute after my last post, I thought better of posting it and went back to delete it, but I saw it was already too late. So I’ll add some things.
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
When a disaster strikes, it’s natural for emotions to overwhelm people. But in responding to such disasters, being overwhelmed by emotions is the last thing you need. It leads to poor judgment and bad decisions.
The entire point of this little internet petition is to say “Square-Enix should do something.” Sure, it’s well-intentioned, and the people who suggested this “are only trying to help.” But throughout, you’re forgetting that the people you’re telling to make these changes and do these things have very likely been sleeping and (hopefully) eating in their offices for the entire weekend. I would wager that the servers have been up this long in great part because the people maintaining them have been physically unable to go home. Heck, keeping those servers up probably helped these people have a slice of normalcy in this psychologically taxing situation.
And you want these people to do more.
Let them take the week off. Let them find their ways home to their families.
On top of that, you are asking them to do something that is fundamentally difficult and needs to be done carefully. To be brief, what if the “charity” that Square-Enix links to is a scam?
If you really want to help, donate to a reputable charity or relief organization, and remind yourself that you are, ultimately, doing the right thing by helping the people who are the most capable at helping.
And if you want to help Square-Enix directly, you need do nothing more than buy their stuff. It could be argued that buying Final Fantasy XIV was already an act of charity.
I won't be commenting on this topic again.

Even if SE doesn't bring the servers back up, u don't need a special button to donate to the relief fund.
Customers of participating wireless carriers can text REDCROSS to 9-0-9-9-9 to make a $10 donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Donations will appear on customers’ monthly bills or be debited from a prepaid account balance. Message and data rates may apply. Depending on the carrier, individuals can donate two or three times per month.

I would glady donate the amount i pay for all 3 of the accounts i pay for in my household to help the people in Japan.
I also think all of us need to realize just where FFXI came from. These people have lost homes, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, husbands, wifes, aunts, uncles, cousins, grand parents and friends. Lets show them an outpouring of love and support from the USA and any other nation that is not going through such a horrific time.
In short "lets put ourselves in there shoes if just for a few moments".
I play with a lot of people from Japan and haven't heard from most of them. I am worried about my FFXI friends. My heart goes out to them and i hope they are all alright.
Someone once said: "Dont be glad its not us, Be sad that it is them, People all have feelings, You, Me, Everyone."

Because SE has already said Apr will not be billed. I will give that money to the Red Cross on my next payday. Everything is budgeted in my house. But would be nice to have another way in game to show support from the FFXI community. My son has suggested an in game item to be ordered like the add ons. That I also could support a few extra dollors will not totally break my budget.

Seriously? We all just want to help out in anyway possible. I would much prefer to donate through SE just for the fact that JP players will know that NA,EU,UK Players do care about them and are helping in any way possible. I agree that there are other ways to donate BUT the point is we are all a FFXI Family, & we should show our support as a Family. Grow up & get out of the bubble you live in. Kitheren and Valkarie, formally of Asura ~> Remora ~> Leviathan both sign. We were planning on doing this anyway.
I think maybe we just want Square Enix to do it so they can see that their fans and customers don't only care about the entertainment that is provided by their home country but that we actually care about the country of Japan itself? Just a little "Hey, we appreciate what you do for us so we want to show you how much we care!" rather than a bunch of messages send to their feedback saying "I donated to Japan!"
I don't know. I don't exactly dislike the idea of an item to be "bought" when you donate but I'm not crazy about it either. People would be donating to get the item and/or brag about donating, with proof, trying to feel better about themselves?
If we donate to Japan at all it should be because we want to help them. Not for recognition of that nature. I just want SE to realize how much we actually do care. That, my fellow gamers, is why I want this button on the viewer, website or forums to donate.
But I don't think it should go to Square Enix themselves. SE as a whole will be fine. Are you going to quit because the servers are down? Unlikely. I think maybe they could set up a little donation website or something to accumulate our donations and send out 100% of it to the Red Cross. Or we could just donate to the Red Cross itself, which I am about to do via my cell phone.
Again, I just want SE to realize that we can actually put our money where our mouths are. Yes, it is easy to sit behind a keyboard and say "I am praying for your country" but it's so much better to see the action of it. After all, actions speak louder than words.
This is my opinion. I respect yours, all of you. So please do respect mine. We are all fellow gamers and no reason to be disrespectful because we do not agree with one another.
