HI I play in Bahamut and just want to say to the SE staff condolences to you all that lost loved ones or friends in the earthquake and following tsunami. Please forward my sympathy and wishes that all are ok.
Doing an event to raise money this week where I work at where would the raised money get sent too? also some ideas for the event would be nice (work at Gamestation so game related event probably)
I know it was a hard decision but it was definitely the right one. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm stunned that this wasn't done sooner, whether by choice, or by force, but I support the move, even if it selfishly means I can't level this weekend.
Kudos on the no-payment for the month of April, I might just donate my monthly fee to charity.

You're a terrible person.
While people are dying, losing there families, friends, houses, pets, jobs, cars, and everything else they have.
You're worried about you not being able to play Final Fantasy XI for a week.
This natural disaster is to blame, it's not like Square-Enix magically wishes to shut down Final Fantasy XI and it's other services just to harm you. With 3 nuclear reactors out, Japan needs all the energy in that area it can get.
I'm pretty sure this'll be your only post on this forum but, it's people like you that make the world a bad place.

The game servers are centered in Japan and Japan just dealt with a massive earthquake, in case you didn't hear. If we had an earthquake like that in the states, I'm pretty sure the only thing that would go down is playonline.com/ff11us and no updates from FFXI_EN Twitter.
Take a minute to think about how things are over there. Now imagine if this earthquake hit your area and your house was on fire after being hit by a tsunami. Imagine if your major energy source was taken out and you were told you had to turn all your electricity off to conserve as much energy for more important things.
Some people, I swear.

I really hope everything there goes well. I feel for your families and I'm sure everyone will do as much as they can to help rebuild. As for the self centered poster.. I can't believe someone would actually say something like that to people who are in such a bad situation.
Best wishes to all of you in Japan.

Freedom of speech, do you need it? Point in question is that, while the tragedy has occured and lives have been destroyed, most companies replicate their servers over wan to avoid just this.
No words can undo the disaster and the grief the disaster has caused, not being online is a small price to pay if that would help the survivors any. According to the news at the moment there is a power shortage and I'd rather have the power available allotted to hospitals and rescue workers.

just so you guys know, he probably didnt know that all the games core servers are kept in japan, and theres no way to allow just japan to not play, as they have to shut the servers off. hes probably under the impression that every country has a server that supplies them with data, but its not that way.
as insensitive as this will sound to some people: i feel that if the game is off for more then 1 buisness week, that SE should compensate us as the players in some way shape or form. also before any of you get on a high horse of " oh japan needs every dollar it can get right now" please consider the following: SE is NOT japan, they are a corporation. now if SE were to donate.... lets say.... a substantial ammount of money (substantial ammount meaning at least 5% of the costs to repair the damage done to japan), then i would totaly be ok with letting my scrip fees go to them without getting service, as it would be helping (so verry slightly, but still helping) japan get back on its feet.
ways SE, can make it up to the community:
1) not charging a subscrption fee for next month (extremely unlikely)
2) charging a reduced scrip fee next mont ( very unlikely)
3) using the time off to slap together a special memorial in-game event for the people who were killed, displaced, or are suffering from this disaster. (slightly possible)
4) creating a memorial item, that has no special use (like a cool costume or something) and distributing it to the entirety of the player base (slightly possible)
5) what se will cop-out and do: An apology letter. (highly possible).

Anyone that feels that electricity should be wasted on keeping a game server going in the midst of a tragedy such as what has happened in Japan, needs to wake up and smell real life, you have been playing the game too long! Pull yourself out of the virtual reality world people! There are people DEAD AND DYING in that country and they need the electricity elsewhere, so stop with your insensitive whining about how you can't play your game and become human again for once. Myself have friends in Japan and they play the game to get their mind off the earthquake and the disasters outside I know a lot maybe be sympathetic atm but there are addicts like myself that play this game 12+ hours a day that by the end of the week are going to be ready to quit FFXI for good because no game to play...

This made me very upset. Look, i know people in america are upset that they can't have a hit of there addiction for a week. but when Katrina hit i don't think people in that disaster were too worried about playing FFXI. It would be nice for us to show some form of condolences to our friends in Japan. At anyrate, for those of you who say "By the end of the week we'll be looking for a new game to play..." ***. You guys have been playing ffxi for many years, and have PROBABLY taken longer breaks from it then a week, and come back. Everyone comes back. Maybe the week will actually do you good and you can go out and play in the snow and get a little sunlight on your vampire like skin, living in your moms basements got going to find you girls! So stop *** about servers being down, when people in Japan can give a *** less of what you think about them turning servers off, when there having a hard enough time keeping food, medical care, and electricity available to them. And yes, if this had happened in america then no the servers would not be off, but the game is NOT centered in AMERICA it's in Japan, [Removed by Moderator according to the FINAL FANTASY XI FORUM Guidelines (http://support.na.square-enix.com/rule.php?id=20&la=1).]
To Japan, you have my beat wishes, and my $10 a month to the red cross (i wish i could offer more, but money is tight here) If there is any other way to help i'm here for you any way i can. Good luck and may some good come to you in your time of need.

My heart goes out to everyone in Japan, I wish there was more I could personally do to assist and help with the relief efforts but all I can do for now is pray for everyone in the affected areas, I was also surprised FFXI wasn't closed down sooner so I say well done to SE for managing to keep everything running as long as they did and hopefully we will once again be able to join our friends from around the world and share adventures in Vana'diel.
And I also agree that all the players that seem to think servers should stay up should go play WoW or something. Heartless people are not welcome imo.
Good luck to SE, their families and everyone affected by these events.

First off as with most people around the world our hearts and prayers are with the people of Japan during this horrible tragedy.
Having said that I think SE should use this week off for more then saving energy. I have a couple ideas on how they could contribute more to helping the people below. If you read these and agree please say so or list other things you think and maybe SE will follow thru with one of them.
1) Allow people the option to opt into paying the service fees, the proceeds would then go to families of the deceased and displaced.
2) Have an in game item for sale (either set price or a donation of at least X amount of dollars) This item would have no stats just show some sort of dedication to those effected by the disaster. Again all proceeds would then go to families of the deceased and displaced.
Either one or two would be great but would be even better if SE would match proceeds raised.
Thats all I have.
Again our hearts and prayers are with you.
My heart goes out to Japan. I can understand all FFXI and FFXIV members are feeling the same towards this devistation.
I know its wrong to advertise (reading T&C) but please everyone try help to get Japan back up and donate as little as you can to the following website: http://www.redcross.org.uk/Donate-Now/Make-a-single-donation/Japan-Tsunami-Appeal
I can asure you, this is 100% safe and secure. This is not a fraud activity.
http://www.redcross.org.uk/Donate-Now/Make-a-single-donation/Japan-Tsunami-Appeal
I only have found the donations that are taking place in the UK. I have no idea about else where, please google and find the most safe & secure website.
Thank you SE!

I'm just stunned by this insensitive post....
Also SE did not shut down the servers because japan got hit by an earthquake alone as you indicate. Neither would they if America got hit by one.
The notes say it as well as the news, the servers were shut down to save electricity necessary to operate hospitals and such.
11 of about 50 nuclear power plants in Japan shut down during the quake, and a power plant can´t just be activated within a few secons through a switch.
The major operator Tepco announced to be only able to supply 31 mil kW of electricity as oposed to usually 41 mil kW.
That´s roughly a 25% loss, and even the japanese gouvernment asked of companies to SAVE POWER whereever possible.
People are dying in Japan and if the supplied electricity can contribute to help even one person over there, it´s already well worth it!

by the way I am quite sure that this disaster will be so expensive... that many companies might just shut down or at the very least be forced to cancel or indefinitely postpone project they were working on... (i.e. anime and video game companies among others.) Japan will probably have to borrow money from other countries such as China. the disaster will cost Billlions and billions and the local economy will flop. japanese people will be spending a lot less money on things like anime and video games so all such companies will be hurting cause they prepare for international sales based of local sales most of the time... if any one cant sympathize with japan an and the companies based there, they can just go crawl into a hole and die.

My thoughts, prayers and best wishes go out to the people of Japan. As much as we love FFXI its a game, I am happy to not play for however long is needed so the people of Japan have enough power. I have lived through 2 natural disasters, an earthquake and a f4 tornado in which 250 houses in my town were destroyed, including my sisters. It make you value life and appreciate what matters, I will support SE no matter how long the servers are down. I would be happy to donate my April membership fee to the earthquake fund, but I am sure that would be complicated. I will look for the red cross links being posted.

My thoughts and prays go out to the people of Japan during this crisis and your time of need, and i completly agree with shutting off the game servers for however long it takes to conserve electricity for services that need it more. I like many others have been watching this all unfold on the news and would just like to say, ignore the people on here that cant seem to understand what you all are going through. and to the people on here who dont understand stfu there not billing you for the month of April, and there the ones who are going through the disaster, even though i disagree and would be happy to pay still even if the services were turned off for the rest of the month, just goes to show ya there are alot better people than you could ever be.

Um, I'm not a heartless selfish idiot, but I too am a bit upset at the servers being shut down. I don't even get to play as much as some others do, but this game is a way to take my mind off of everything and deal with stress and now it's gone. I'm sure I'm not the only person who feels that way... especially Japanese players right now. I saw plenty of them on the game yesterday... I'm sure the game is a big time stress relief for them after what they've been dealing with. From what I've read, SE is located in Tokyo and other than power outages and people having to sleep in buildings and their cars because many highways were shut down, the most catastrophy and damage seems to be outside the city.
I was one of the Americans who went to the Japanese forums to offer prayers to their people. I'm just as sad as everyone else at what's going on over there. But if SE's facilities have gone unharmed and THEIR employees can still get to work every day, they should keep it going. It's not to keep the selfish morons happy... it's to keep the game going for stress relief and to stick our noses up at mother nature that she can't keep us down. I don't know... that's just the way I feel about it. I guess what I'm trying to say is that for me, it's more than just a game. I'm not upset that I can't do dynamis this week or I can't go farming in sea tonight. That stuff can wait for as long as SE needs it too. But it's kind of like when a loved one dies and people grieve... if you try to live life normally after it happens, it kind of helps you deal with it because life doesn't stop and neither should you. This disaster is kind of like that. For many of us, living life as we normally do helps us deal with it.
My prayers continue for you, Japan. It's absolutely terrible what happened to you and I hope for a swift recovery and rebuild of the parts of your nation that were devastated.

Oh, I know. I just now read about the power companies afraid they're going to run out of power, so I can definitely understand why SE is doing this. But like I said... people should carry the attitude of telling nature she can't keep us down as a people. It kind of makes it harder for some of us who care to reach out in a sense. For instance, on the game I can actually talk to Japanese players who know English and directly help them emotionally/mentally/spiritually/whatever and now I can't do that. Now I have to post on here and hope they come to read it.

On the note of the servers going down, although I am dissappointed with not gettin my FFXI fix for a week but as they say in japan "Shikata ga nai (仕方がない)" meaning it can't be helped. These are exceptional circumstances facing japan and its energy supply, so i would hope that everyone can understand why the server's were taken down.
My thoughts are with those cought in the Earthquake and Tsunami, as well as those close to the nuclear reactors which appear as they may meltdown. Take care everyone.

Look. It's already been said, but yeah. Lots of people are hurt/dead/dying. It's horrible. I'm sure lots of you feel for them and all, as do I. Just not as much as I do having my favorite time killer interrupted. My father died in Katrina, didn't really care about that either. He was a worthless womanizing hypocrite. It's not so much that I'm a cruel person, it's simply that I'm sick of humanity as a whole. I've seen pretty much the worst from people, so excuse me if I seem heartless in saying I care more about my game time than I do for however many lives are lost. That being said, good luck to all of those affected.

Condolences to all those affected by the earthquake in Japan. I think sometimes we FF addicts use the game to escape from the news and other negative events of real life, so this hits "home" for us. To SE: Please focus on making sure your families are safe, and consoling those who lost loved ones. It sounds like from the news that the 3 towers of the affected nuclear power plant have been damaged to the point that they will not be brought back online again, ever, one tower has already undergone a meltdown and they are struggling to prevent the other two from doing the same, so there is the short term problem of prevent meltdowns, and then the more serious long term problem of the loss of power those plants provided to the country - which cant be replaced overnight. When / if servers are brought back online, you will have a loyal fan base ready to play again - but please focus on the important things first.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan and all those worldwide affected by the earthquake and it's tsunami.
That said, what a crock to shut down the game!!! Calamities happen every day somewhere, some more devastating to the local population than others. However, we are told over and over in their own publicity that SE is a global enterprise with major centers to serve their 3 main areas of gameplay: Japan, North America and Europe. So how about proving it and transfering game control to your servers either in the US or Europe and allowing your paying customers to continue on with their gaming lives. I seriously doubt the game would grind to a halt had this calamity occured in the west coast of the the US (earthquake or volcano). No, they would have put out some cute sympathy article and everyone not in the affected areas would continue on without interruption. Ever hear of mirror servers so backup sites can take over the workload should the main site be affected?
Will our monthly bill be reduced by 25% to compensate for this voluntary worldwide interruption of service, I doubt it as Final Fantasy customers outside Japan usually seem to be second class citizens. (ok didnt totally read SE notice b4 writing that part, my bad)

I think that's a great idea. Get some servers set up elsewhere for backup. I'm sure there's plenty of buildings on the west coast here in the US for sale they can use to set up some copy server computers and then copy all the server info into them.

Sorry to say but what happened during 9/11 did not cripple most if not all of the US, unlike the NE sea board power outtage that happened a few years back. Japan has POWER plants malfunctioning, and have had powerful after shocks that have done only the gods know what to the power cables ect. on top of w/e the tsunami and initial quakes did. Please use some freaking common sense. Instead of being a selfish uninformed oaf.

I offer my sincere condolences to SE employees and their families and the Japanese people as a whole. I 100% agree with your decision to suspend services. I was actually slightly surprised to have service the day of/after the quake. My brother works with the Red Cross in NYC and will be leaving for Japan on Monday so its kinda personal for me. My thoughts are to all involved. I am disgusted at the people who feel this was a bad move and SE's fault.
P.S. Good chance I will get flagged,ban,w/e for this but I don't really care, I hate heartless, self-centered individuals: Umbrion, Guardian, Gropitou and to a lesser extent a few others, your nothing but trash to me no explanation needed. If you individuals or anyone else who shares your opinion on this matter feels this is too much to deal with, feel free to contact me and ill gladly send ya nooses or let ya sit in my garage with the car running free of charge. Bummer. Of course the bigger bummer is the dead in Japan and the disruption in the lives of the survivors. I wish you guys didn't make such a high quality game, so I wouldn't go through withdrawal.
Well no biggie. I have other things to pass the time, such as my recently purchased copy of Dragon Quest 6, another fine Square-Enix product.
Best of luck in your recovery from this terrible disaster. I also want to say that it's a real class act that you're waiving the monthly service fee for the next month. If the game is down for 1 week, that sucks, but then we get 3 free weeks, which is awesome.

This is a repost from the other thread, but it's fascinating for me to see how many people come here and immediately whine and complain without reading the actual thing. How do I know? You're complaining about monthly charges. There are no charges for April, people.
If you have any hope for humanity at all, cease these nonsense attacks, and realize that there are many, many human beings whose lives will never be the same, who could be alive but no one knows it, and there are many more who will never see loved ones again, and will never know about them. If you are in a comfortable place with a full belly and are warm/cool at will and can read this, you are in a mostly better place than an incredible amount of people in Japan.
~
A friend suggested this last night:
Donate what you would have paid for April to a disaster relief fund. The Red Cross has been very prevalent, but there are quite a few places that are also offering relief. Or, you can wait until April 1 and do it then - they will need relief for more than just the immediate future.
~
I was a sackholder in a Japanese HNM on Alexander. I know that quite a few of my friends are still safe. I don't know about some of them. Most of them have quit, but stay in touch. I haven't heard from a few since the earthquake happened. My friends that live in Japan that can contact people outside Japan (cell phone networks are wrecked, the internet is spotty at best, rolling blackouts make things hard, etc) are doing so and relaying information as they can. I can think of two immediate people that lived north of Tokyo that we have absolutely no idea where they are. I believe the last count was there were 6 more people that no one's heard from since the disaster. We are lucky as a group because a lot of our people that I'm aware of were mostly in southern Japan, but not everyone.
Anyone - and I mean ANYONE - who complains about not being able to play the game should be immediately shipped to a disaster-stricken area and forced to help with the cleanup. I cannot BELIEVE - well, wait, I can, unfortunately, having played this game for years - that there are some people that are so narrow-minded as to think this will impact their lives on a bad way.
Go outside. Go to a library. Volunteer somewhere. Clean your room like you've been saying you'll do for a while. Go to class instead of skipping it for HNM camps. Call your loved ones. Be very, very, very happy that this did not happen where you live, and thank your lucky stars.
This is a REAL tragedy, one that will have ramifications for YEARS to come - not just in Japan but all over the globe.
Again - this is a natural disaster. "Disaster: a sudden calamitous event bringing great damage, loss, or destruction; broadly : a sudden or great misfortune or failure"
~
Again:
Please consider donating even $10 via text message to the RC or a similar place. You already budgeted the money anyway - if every single person that played FFXI that wasn't Japanese or that was adversely affected by this (I mean losing your home, not losing your ability to log in the servers) donated, we could make a LOT of a difference - just think, your money could help some of those people that you've played alongside for years. (Many people seem to forget they are human beings as well, but not everyone, thank the gods.)
Sorry for the soapbox, and if you are the praying kind, or the kind of person to send good thoughts - please send them overseas for my friends - and everyone - that are missing. Thank you.
PS: If anyone knows anyone that was in ICBM on Alexander that is still in Japan, please have them post or have them contact me, if you can. I would appreciate it. (my email is 1girlarmy@gmail.com) I have Kaminari on Xbox Live but I haven't seen him online since the earthquake. The other people I have contact information on have not been online either.

I wholeheartedly put my prayers to Japan since the earthquake happened. 95% of people understand the situation and will backup SE's decision, be it forced or voluntary, to do this action. As for those who play the game for the immense amount of time, myself included, I can only say that this is an excellent opportunity to at the very least take a much needed break. Go out, see that shiny yellow ball in the sky.
And donate.

Why did you not read the details before posting. You're not paying anything for this interruption, your entire next month will be free of charge. That means that unless this problem persists for over 4 weeks, you're actually saving money on it.

I'm betting they have development servers and billing servers, plus servers to handle things like this forum, but the lion's share of their resources, used to run the game, are set up in Japan.
And we aren't talking about a global network of highly critical military tactical information relevant to national security. We're talking about a video game. Setting up that kind of redundancy to keep the GAME going even after an enormous earthquake just doesn't make sense. It's not that critical.
Will our monthly bill be reduced by 25% to compensate for this voluntary worldwide interruption of service, I doubt it as Final Fantasy customers outside Japan usually seem to be second class citizens.
I believe it was mentioned that our monthly bill will be reduced by 100%.

I was watching my TV one night when they broke in with a special report
About some devistating earthquake in Peru
There were thirty thousand crushed to death, even more were buried alive
On the Richter scale it measured 8.2
And I said, "God, please answer me one question?"
"Why'd they have to interrupt 'The Simpsons' just for this?"
What a drag, 'cause I was taping it and everything
And now I'll have to wait for the rerun to see the part of the show I missed

It really saddens me to see people whine and complain because the servers are down, the devastation from this earthquake is probably hard to imagine within the comfort of your own home. So I recommend you sit and watch videos of everything that has happened over and over until you fully understand what is happening in the world before you post your little emotional post about the servers are down. I am a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and I was stationed in Japan, at the moment I cannot get in touch with any of my Marines because they are probably working their ass off as part of the relief efforts. To all the people going "EMO" over the server situation, try to contain yourselves for the following week and if you can't say anything nice then just S.T.F.U.

I have to lol when people compare this to 9/11. No, your little 9/11 wasn't even close to the magnitude of destruction this natural disaster caused.
Did 9/11 put two nuclear power plants out of commission? Did it destroy 70 thousand homes, and wipe an entire town off the map?
This is the biggest earthquake recorded in decades, and some of you retards are worried about OMG I CANT PLAY HERP DERP.
You should go shoot yourselves in the face.
But it's kind of like when a loved one dies and people grieve... if you try to live life normally after it happens, it kind of helps you deal with it because life doesn't stop and neither should you. This disaster is kind of like that. For many of us, living life as we normally do helps us deal with it.
So it's ok for you to tell people, who need this power to save lives, to get on with it so you can play a game, but you don't see that you should be turning this advice back on yourself? It is YOU who should be trying to live normally and YOU who needs to see life hasn't stopped, not for you anyway, for many in japan, sadly it has, get over yourself and try RL for a week, who knows, you might even like it

Did you also see that if I had the money, I'd go out there right now and help? Life doesn't stop... even for the many people in Japan. After they've picked up the pieces, they will be trying to keep living life as normally as they can. Don't pretend they won't be. As I read deeper into the power situation, I do understand why SE did what they did today. But it still doesn't account for their lack of a backup by having servers elsewhere or whatever. I'm sure SE isn't happy about not collecting April's fees from millions of customers next month. I'm not blaming SE and I'm not a moron. I just think there's a lot of us that think SE could have been better prepared or done something differently. After all, if our service had been interrupted IMMEDIATELY from the earthquake, I don't think ANY of us would be on here mad about the interruption. It's that our gaming life seemed uninterrupted for THREE DAYS AFTERWARDS. Unless you spend your life glued to the TV media's nonstop coverage (which I'm not because I don't have TV), then you don't really realize a lot of what's going on over there, so it's hard to understand why after three days of continued service, the servers have to be shut down. It's because of people on here who are posting news tidbits about the power and nuclear facilities that I'm beginning to understand why.

What you and I felt was a natural human reaction. Now that people are sharing some of the stuff going on that directly affects the power, I'm feeling less upset about it. Don't beat yourself up over it. And ignore the people so quick to judge you and I just because we didn't feel the same thing they did at first news of the shutdown.

People need to stop bringing up 9/11 in this discussion. 9/11 had nothing to do with actual FFXI game servers. SE isnt shutting down the servers due to there being a natural disaster in the area (even though it is a massive disaster), SE is shutting down the servers because they do not have the power to keep them running 24 hours a day right now.
So please, do the rest of us Americans a favor and stop with your ignorant compare/contrast using 9/11 because all it does is make us look foolish.

What makes you think I'm prioritizing my right to play over the needs of a country? It's not just MY right, but the right of millions who do business with a "global company". I'm not even upset about not being able to farm or do dynamis or level my smn for a while. What bothers me is that I don't get to spend time with my friends from literally around the world for an untold amount of time. When somebody else on here said SE should be using servers they have in other countries to keep it going, I agree with them. What is wrong with that? As I said, this game is stress relief for a lot of people. I saw Japanese players on the game yesterday when I was playing. Obviously, they also use it to escape the reality of this tragedy in their own country. I didn't know until today that Japan relied so heavily on nuclear power for their electricity. And knowing that one facility has a reactor meltdown with two more reactors threatening to meltdown is a big enough deal for me to be like... "oh damn... I guess I understand why!" That doesn't negate the fact that a "global company" shouldn't have a backup plan.
I mean for god sakes... some of you are seriously judgmental at others just for not feeling what you do.

My heart goes out to all of those who lost someone in this tragedy.
As to those complaining about not being able to play, most MMOs may have servers in multiple countries, but the game is located on a central server. If you haven't participated in a server transfer of the magnitude that it would require to shift everything for a game this size, then you really should stop and think for a moment. When you're transferring something onto say, a flash drive, it takes extra power to do the transfer, as well as the power that the server normally takes to run. Now, in the middle of that, turn your computer off suddenly. You data will be corrupted on at least one end, and possibly on both, which makes it unable to be recovered. This is meant to simulate the blackouts that they are having EVERYWHERE in Japan due to the power plants being damaged. So, you can either suck it up and go deal with people in person, or whine and cry about not being able to play when a server transfer could destroy your character.

do the world a favor and do this:

I understand the stress relief issue, it's as much an escape for me as anybody. But again you say

you are looking at it in a very business minded way. I'm not judging you, I just do not understand how when something like this happens in the world, regardless of how much news coverage I had seen(I know you said you had no TV, internet for the news maybe?) the first thing that enters peoples minds is how this affects them and their so called rights, tbh I couldn't care less right now when or if I may be able to start playing FF again, The only thing that should matter is that Japan does what it has to do do get through this awful, awful time, regardless of whos nose is put out of joint
Oh, I do agree with you. The more I learn about the power situation, the more understanding I am about the whole thing.

You express concern but show your crap view of business during a major national disaster to Japan... You think SE is the ONLY company who has closed its doors or services because of this?
Major Sony factories are closed, Toyota, Toshiba practically all Japanese companies are down and out and not providing a "service" get over yourself, shut the **** up and step outside for once.

one thing i've learned over the years is this: for every kind and nice person you meet..there are 10 that are assholes, pricks, simple minded fools who only care about themselves, and bully's to people. now that being said the nice people in this world are outnumbered by the assholes...so we just have to bear with it and ignore them and focus on doing what we can to help those in japan whether it be by preying, donating, or otherwise. that being said one last thing for those of you who"CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT FINAL FANTASY AND FEEL THAT SE SHOULD BOW DOWN TO YOU AND TAKE AWAY PRESIOUS POWER FROM STUFF THEY NEED IT FOR TO KEEP YOU HAPPY!"
do the world a favor and do this:
Shut down your computer,take a hammer and bash your monitor in, set your tower on fire, then yourself as well. because the less people like you in this world, the more the nice people like me and others can help those who need it without people like you getting to them first.-_-;

No, I wouldn't. I would seriously dig in and help people. As Vie said, I was speaking from a business minded standpoint earlier. I also did not fully understand how much Japan relies on nuclear power for their electricity, and so obviously the one facility having such bad reactor issues will have a major impact. It's all understandable. That's why I would go and help if I had the money too. I do feel bad for the people over there. But sympathy for people isn't the only human feeling and businesses (well, at least American ones) don't usually operate from a sympathy standpoint. they normally only care about money. It speaks a lot to me that SE is willing to not get paid from its paying customers for a month. I'm sure all the executives are in meetings right now decided how to best deal with this and get things up and running again. they are a BUSINESS after all...

Without sounding like the judgmental jerks on here, I will repost a message from another person that will explain why so you understand:
most MMOs may have servers in multiple countries, but the game is located on a central server.

And you're an idiot if you think what they did and they way they have compensated players for this disaster is anything less than heartless. FFXI is not "need" it's a want and because of that, the luxury of playing XI is disabled.
It's also not one reactor, its two that are having problems. Also they have 55 reactors that supply power to 30% of that country... all of which have gone into a shutdown mode until the aftershocks and tsunamis quiet down.

Agreed - The amount of trolling last night in Jeuno as the servers were being shutdown was really nasty, not for nothing but the true nature of people really showed through. The "Elite" End game people last night shouting throughout the city about how they wish everyone over there would die really pushes the straw. When the united states had to deal with 9/11 half the country shut down. Everyone on this game right now is complaining because a "game" shutdown. When your family is sitting in the hospital bed on a respirator keep in mind guys you would rather power the "Video game" as apposed to life support.
Trolls Will Always Be Trolls - but to be this heartless over a video game-- just keep in mind if they do not get this resolved it will have world wide ramifications, and it will not be just your precious video game that's broken, it may be half the stuff you turn over that says "Made in japan"
For those of you that truly know who you are just assume your on my blacklist eternally and wish SE would take the time to parse their own logs after last night knowing they never will its just a shame I'll have to even see you in game again.
Keeping the Japanese people in prayers as they deal with this crisis - do what it takes to avert disaster the addicts will just have to find another drug or seek help. all you end gamers who's precious schedule was messed up by this - go tell mommy you have reschedule dynamis/abyssea and your Empy gear will just have to wait - be great-full if the servers even come back up.
Goodluck and God Bless, Wish the trolls were all over there knee deep in it,.

I took some time to read most of the posts in this thread. Here's what I have to say.
Learn to live without.
This game should not run our lives, no matter how addicted we are to this game. This is not our life line, it is purely entertainment. If you put entertainment in front of your lives, you might as well live your life the way the affected people are living in Japan.
SE did what they could for the community to keep the game going, but the effects of keeping the game was not important for the future of Japan.
If the plants stop entirely because Japan tried to keep living in the condition they are in, we will find us right back into the same situation we are in now, no FFXI or FFXIV. In Square-Enix's fault, they did not plan on getting hit with an earthquake of this magnitude, and unfortunately they did not prepare for it. Or to say they were prepared for an earthquake, but not for this magnitude. They also did not predict this, like Katrina was not predicted. You can argue all you want that they saw physical evidence that these disasters were coming, but I excuse them for not being fortune-tellers and not being able to move the land away from the disaster.
I hope for the complainers and the understanding alike, that
Square-Enix should put their lives in front of ours and the company.
We, the gamers, will live on without the game, and will do whatever we can to have them come back, whether that's in prayers or volunteering to recover what was lost. I do think donating what we would pay for our April fee should go to the recovery of Japan, and so I will give my $13.95 to Japan. I hope all for the best for them and a safe recovery. My hopes are with you all.

Hmm.... Nevermind, I've changed my stance. Turn the servers back on!
I trust the servers will come back up as soon as the energy situation is settled. For the players affected by the quake, it's actually a good thing for them to be able to go back to a comfortable place.
Square Enix is just being considerate of the government's call to scale back on power consumption. That's all this is. Well, that and a bunch of people who live through FFXI showing that they lack any perspective on reality.

The decision to shut down servers must not have been an easy one, but it's understandable, considering the circumstances. Frankly, I'm surprised they were still up during and after the earthquake as long as they were. And I'm more (pleasantly) surprised that SE is giving us a full month for having the servers down for a week.
Now, if people are the giving type, one might take that 12.95 (or whatever money they're taking) and give it to the Red Cross/Church/insertfavoritecharityhere and call it a day. Or not, really it's the person's choice.
And really, the rhetoric in this topic needs to be cranked down a couple of notches or three. While the situation is rather dramatic, that doesn't mean we have to be.

Having servers in North America would prevent such a situation, but, simple fact, that is not the case at this very moment, so SE is doing the responsible thing for their nation and shutting down an unnecessary service. Yes, it is unnecessary. For those trying to argue that the game is needed for relieving the stress of people who can afford to sit comfortably playing a game, I argue that those people can find something else to do to allow energy conservation and diversion to more necessary facilities such as hospitals and rescue and reconstruction efforts.
While some people don't have a GAME to relieve their stress, others don't have water, to drink. Or a house to live in. Or...
Thankfully, there are far more responses from people who understand that helping in a tragedy is more important than just playing a game. There will always be the insensitive, selfish and ignorant among us, but thankfully, there are others who think beyond themselves.
For those who do care, a great idea, as previously posted, would be to donate the April fees that SE is not charging us (for those who don't understand math, they aren't charging us for a whole month, even though they are only shutting down the game for a week, tentatively): http://www.charitywatch.org/hottopics/JapanTsunami2011.html

Been following the story through the newspapers and TV; I'm surprised I've yet to see any donation appeals for what has happened. It's literally catastrophic, and I know I'll probably quit complaining about the weather and realise how lucky it is to not get plagued by such a disaster.
Screw giving us a free billing month, put up an official sanctioned appeal for the country and I'd happily donate it (and more) towards it. I'd imagine a fair percentage of the player-base would most likely do the same. Failing that, if there's no official appeal, anyone know of any respectable charities to donate funds towards?

Disaster recovery sites are very very expensive. I'm sure they have considered this and also considered the expense of setting up a duplicate (or near duplicate) DR site. For something that is critical like your communication platform it is essential. I'm sure for the playonline and forums sites they have a full DR. I agree with SE when comparing potential loss of income / server outages vs the cost. In its place they are likely doing hourly backups and moving them offsite and finally out of the area completely should a complete disaster occur.
In this case they had three options:
1. Move the physical servers to a new colo outside of Japan - This is painful and expensive an can take months to return back to normal.
2. Create a duplicate of the system offsite at another colo and restore from existing backups, slightly less expensive but can take a week or more in most cases to come back online.
3. Shut down the servers for a week while the dust clears.
I suspect it isn't just the local power savings they are concerned with but also the IT staff operating the servers. If they have families and responsibilities then doing either of the first two will take 100% of their time to accomplish in a reasonable fashion. I am happy they took the steps of being nice to the employees and allowing them to take care of themselves rather than the game as a priority.

to go off in a diffrent direction im surprised no one has started the BS "omg this is a sign of XI's END !!" as we dont even know if any of the Japanese Developers were in that death toll. i bet the game will see a decent depopulation due to players that are dead from the earthquake or dying now from radiation. its going to be hard SE recently took a big $$ hit when the new XIV Director did some house cleaning.

And a polite notice to all those incentive pricks that really need to take there head out their own arses and smell fresh air for once . FFXI is a GAME not real life.. So it's down for a week big deal, some people have lost homes, friends & family. They won't come back in a week... You want to do something constructive stop typing such crap about being so hard done to with the servers being shut down and actually sit and think about what the people of Japan are going through ~

I just hope that one day this poor sad and lonely individual as well as anyone else who feels the same will reflect on what has happened, just for a moment................ and realise how fortunate they are not to be a victim.

Coming from a person that has family in Japan, all you ppl that are QQing over the servers being down can die in a fire. Seriously people, if your family was struck by a natural disaster you would be more concerned about them than some game. I think SE is doing the right thing. I've had alot of disagreements with how SE operates the game but this is by far the most responsible thing I think they could have done. Recovery efforts will be hard on Japan, more so than they would have been for the US for the fact that they are only allowed to have the JSDA and no standing military force since WW2. We have the entire US military to help out if a disaster strikes. The fact that they had three nuclear power plants go down is a MAJOR issue there. Try to remember just how much power those put out, loosing just one of them would be a devastating blow. SE, thank you for not passing the buck as it were.

Call me a troll all you like, i'm just saying only what people don't want to say because it's "politically incorrect". Anyone who places a game over human life should go play in traffic and take their own.
I meant the original troll, you were feeding him by acknowledgement. Best way to handle an idiot on a forum is to not respond. I don't necessarily agree with banning because someone shares an opinion, I do think the original was terribly insensitive and should be ignored and flamed via PM.

to go off in a diffrent direction im surprised no one has started the BS "omg this is a sign of XI's END !!" as we dont even know if any of the Japanese Developers were in that death toll. i bet the game will see a decent depopulation due to players that are dead from the earthquake or dying now from radiation. its going to be hard SE recently took a big $$ hit when the new XIV Director did some house cleaning.
Ah wow yeah I hadn't considered that. I'm also curious to know how many people will quit when the game is offline for more than a week. I hope most people will be patient, but I worry some people might find another way to spend their time. I guess if that happens, good for them to find something to do but some of them will be missed. It is amazing that people get mad at those that voice an opinion about the subject that if something happens to where the servers are at then the game would go down. But the game was made for the people in Japan and we where invited to play to at a later time so i would go with no if something happen in America or say Europe that would not happen but thanks for bringing up the issue and trying to make it so people are not thinking about those in Japan that are now missing family members. Yes its sad we cant play and no wining will change that till SE decides to turn servers back on.

All the best of wishes go to Japan right now. My thoughts and hopes go all out to all effected by this horrible event. SE, take as much time as you need to save power and get the important matters handled.
With that said, to the players: Realistically, how long do you predict SE will keep the game down for? Personally I'd ballpark it anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months. Honestly I'm ok with that though since I highly doubt that SE would bill us for a service we can't use. I mean they already gave us the April billing cycle. I think that's proof enough. Besides, it's just a game. Sure I'm bummed that I just got my RDM to 30 only to have to wait before getting some of the advanced jobs but this all nothing in the shadow of death and carnage that has been ripping through Japan. Personally I'm donating every penny I'd normally use for this game to relief efforts for as many months as this game is down.

As someone from New Zealand, we know what you're going through, we got struck twice in 5 months by earthquakes that decimated one of our main citys, but even that doesn't compare to the ammount of devistation that's occured in Japan. I wish to state this very carefully...
After the announcement that Square-Enix would not be billing for April, I can see some people getting a little upset.
I certainly would have no issue with voluntary donations (which is one of the reasons I like some sort of gil-based donation process too, if it can be made workable -- there are a number of prominent players who, though they are prominent in the community, have made it no secret that they are struggling in the present economy), but, after they already said (to their strong credit -- they didn't have to, in that they could've declared a simple force majeure with every justification) that they would not bill for April, it'd be a bit of a reversal to go mandatory.

from my understanding SE are not going to bill us for April due to the servers being down i think it might be an idea for SE to give us the chance to pay the fee and then they use it to help those that need it. I will be sending what I can to the relief.
I think we will be very lucky should the game be back up and running in a week given everything that has happened and is happening I think we may be looking at a longer time out I just hope the most of the people understand why and don't go on having a moan about it.
My thoughts are with ther families at this very sad time.

I want to say this carefully, because I don't want my normal "subtle as a sledgehammer" motif to mark this thread up any worse than it already is, but I do feel I need to say something about the players disgusted by the (I am forced to censor myself, but please insert any inflammatory term you wish for them) who are either:
1) Actually more concerned about their own presence in-game than the events in Japan
and/or
2) Screwing around to get this type of reaction
Is it any real wonder why I don't respect the player-base when a bunch of you (similar censorship) act like this?

Yes. Agreed.
Some of these jackalopes need to come into reality. And now, to help do that, I'm going to say something which is going to be considered inflammatory to some:
People had better get their minds wrapped around the possibility that XI and XIV may never come back.
Anyone who's seen some of the pictures and videos out of Japan (and has been reading the news, especially on the nuclear power situation) has to put that possibility into play.
You've got these malcontents who are, at the least, stirring up the pot by acting like complete inhuman savages, for just a one-week outage.

What the hell makes you think the FFXI servers won't come back? All they have to do is flip a switch and they'll come back on. They were just up less than 24 hours ago... They're allowing for the energy that would be diverted to their company to be diverted elsewhere until this crisis is somewhat resolved. When they feel it's appropriate, they will turn them back on. Quit with the doomsday theories as they make absolutely no sense.

I'm all with them, I don't care about FFXI in this case, it's just a game after all... it was the best thing to do, they need power to supply hospitals first.
And for those who are looking for something to do... go play outside, take a walk, go to the movies! You know... the things we used to do before video games and MMORPG were invented? ^^

My friend (who played FFXI very very very long ago, was working outside Sendai, and left earlier this week when the 7.+ went off - his company gave everyone the rest of the week paid off and told them to go down to Tokyo) has communicated to me that they have been told that rolling blackouts will be fairly normal measure from now for a "long while" (translated from French). that is - Indefinitely.
For those who might not understand this - it's not always a scheduled thing, or able to keep to the schedule - so even if servers were turned back on, there would be chances of the power being cut almost all the time. It's beneficial to EVERYONE to keep the servers down - no corruptions or loss of data, etc. I hope that makes sense.
as for the previous comment, I think I was misconstrued a bit, so I'm going to clear up:
I haven't had a job since Dec. 09. I've logged in maybe 2x a month in the last 3-4 months. I've been playing since 04. I fund my FFXI entirely on selling on half.com and other venues. I understand financial hardship on that realm.
And no, I'm not saying SE should go back on their word - I'm saying I'm wondering what the responses would have been had they decided to do a mass donation instead of taking the profit for a month.
I'm hoping many people (at least, in the US) will just do the easy thing, and donate $10 via their cell phone or whatnot - it's still less than you would have paid next month, go grab a soda with a friend this week with the rest.
PS: Muito obrigado, SGM Jhanaka for closing the other thread- it's nice to see you again as well, you have always been nice and fair.

Well, not all of them are taking time off. They're keeping the forums going and their website at least and the GMs I'm sure are still moderating this.
WHat is still running and what is not should tell you something about which servers are either 1) hosted or backed up at SE-EU or SE-NA, or 2) are hosted by a non-SE server farm.
Anyways, my thoughts and prayers go to those in Japan picking up the pieces.

You shame North America with your selfish ignorance. RL > FF. There is no discussion. Japan is facing a rough road to recovery. Shutting down a game is the least of their nations concerns. They are trying to prevent nuclear meltdown for the safety of the entire world. An entire nation is mourning the loss of their country men & women. I don't care if they shutdown for a year. Their recovery is essential to world stability & prosperity. May god lift their heavy hearts & help them rise like the phoenix.

After reading some of the posts in this thread, it's surprising that some people even care about the game and when the servers will be up again. A whole country has been devastated. They lost everything that was inside of their home, and to the even more unfortunate, family members and friends have been lost. This is definitely not the time to worry about when you'll be able to leech your next job to 90 or when you will be getting the next piece of equipment. Who cares when you're knee deep in water and debris in your living room? Who cares when the people you care most in the world are missing or dead? Who cares when the country you live in and love has no electrical power for lonely, cold nights, no shelter for those who lost their safe haven called home, no food for the weary survivors, no heat for the cold and abandoned, no love for the ones who's lost everything? This is not the time to complain about a game, but a time to complain about what is not being done to help.
However, there are many posts in here that have touched me and made me want to post something here myself. It's nice to see some humanity left in this world. I would also like to send my condolences to everyone in Japan. I hope that everyone can be reunited with loved ones. I hope that your lives can be rebuilt and everything will one day go back to normal, where you would wake up and worry about the work you left at the office the night before, or how your children did in their last sporting event, and not the thoughts of what I will do for money now that the office is destroyed, or where your children are. I wish for your well-being and hope that you can find your children, or parents, or siblings, or anyone you hold dear to your heart. God Bless you all.

However the Devistation is Still great and with power and other Sytems being Knocked out , thier are far more important fish to fry , than Linkshell Dynamis runs or Abysia runs.

My thoughts are with all our Japanese friends in this time of great chaos. Having an interuption in our gameplay is a small matter, compared with what you are going through. I understand that electricity is a concern and it must be used to provide for basic human services, before it can be used for entertainment. I am sure that Japan will pull together (As it ALWAYS does!) to recover from this terrible misfortune. Take care, my friends!

I would like to start out by saying THANK YOU SE for your considerate actions to help preserve power in Japan in this time of emergency and THANK YOU for preserving all we have worked so hard for. Like many I will miss playing the game for a week or three, but is this is the very least I can do to help others in this time of need I will gladly bear this onus.
Now for all you crying little babies here is 1 more point that I have yet to see mentioned.
From a computer technical viewpoint (and yes I went to college for Computer Engineering).
What you are also not seeing is that Vana Diel is not just a "World" it IS a network of computer servers tied together to facilitate the playing of a single game across the planet. If SE had not taken the servers offline when they did look at the other ramifications involved.
SE not only inconvenienced you for a week or two of your life they also preserved your prescious "World". Rolling black outs and power surges due to the loss of Japan's nuclear reactors could have (and most likely would have) destroyed the servers (seen it many times repairing other systems after elecrical storms). So now when you get done crying over your selfish loss, turn around and say thank you to SE for preserving YEARS of your advancments and achievements. All of which could have been lost forever.
Which would you rather lose? 1 week, maybe a month of game play OR everything you have worked for over the years, andeveryone starting back at lvl 1 with nothing?
Just my 2-cents worth maybe it will help throw another perspective on this situation.
May all our japanese friends be safe and remember that some of us are there for them.

wow. how self centered. You would rather see the electricity diverted to a video game rather thank...oh i don't know...HOSPITALS? I would like to say I'm shocked by this posters response but I'm not.
Aren't the servers in California? It's the electricity in Japan that is the problem. If people can't be disciplined enough to conserve their own electricity, then others shouldn't have to pay. Tragedies happen every day in the world, children die of hunger or aids, and yet we are all on the game complaining about something as trivial as not being able to get the empress hairpin to drop. What makes this tragedy any different?
Dear Square-Enix,
Please, first allow me to extend my sincerest apologies for the brutal and insensitive comments made, on behalf of the lower-beings who try to think that they belong to the human race when they clearly lack the compassion to truly be so.
Secondly - take all the time out you need! As many of us have mentioned already, the vast majority of players are more than willing to make donations - it isn't much, but I plan on making a £60 donation as soon as I get my next paycheque.
Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with you, and given time I believe that Mother Earth will repay the country for the damage that she has done. May the lives that have sadly ended from this burn brightly in the hearts of the survivors forever.
~ Blessed Be.

they probly cant get diesel fuel to deal with the rolling blackouts.....
lets face it a server farm doesnt consume that much power
doubt they are doing it for humanitarian reasons
you realise how many Hard drives and Clusters make up a Single World server? X that by trhe remainaing servers for XI then add the XIV servers + the POL Server cluster the average Consumer Machine will use 100~250 Watts of power durring use. Server class hardware consumes much more power. compare a server class HDD to a Consumer cflass HDD you'll see the server Class HDD consumes upto double or tripple.
you though with your post.. have no clue how much power likely YOU use up to run your system. <You can have this> <Boot To The Head!>

Tragedies do happen every day, but for you to say that you have to pay for a country's misfortune by not being able to play is sad. Bad things happen every day but that doesn't mean you get to use those things as an excuse to minimalize this one or to rationalize your selfish desire to play a game.

WHY?!
OMG you are soooooo stupid if SE payed that much they would go bankrupt... TWICE...
Your Asking a victim of a disaster to take responsibility... dick...
Think before you talk. ill forgive you tho cause this is more ignorance than ill-will.
Guess my text didnt get through properly to some.... not billing for the month that a game is down for more then a week is a standard courtesy of virtually ALL paid MMO's. i wasnt demanding reparations or anything like that. im simply stating that, as a consumer in a corporate run world, that i am not willing to pay money to a corporation for services that are not being rendered as per our agreement.
Now if you didnt selectively quote my post, youd have noticed that i also suggested that they make commemorative items for the ingame player base as a reminder of this event, or make some form of memorial service.
I'm not too good with the whole tact thing, so i might have come across as an angry consumer by mistake. and i never said that they had to take responsibility for the disaster... i was simply commenting on SE's previous history of massive cop-outs. however i was completely mistaken and incorrect on this one (see quoted post below).
And yes i grossly underestimated the sheer level of funds needed to repair, .002% of 5 billion, is one million dollars (which is roughly what SE makes roughly each month on scrip fees, probably more like 800k) im sure 5 billion is no where near enough to completely repair all of the damage, however it is enough to get their country back in operating order, to set up temp housing, and begin repairs. (id assume 5 billion would be adequate for this task, unless someone has a degree in economics on a country's level could shed some more light on this as to what it would cost, im just a plebeian and can only put out a guess as towards what it would cost.)
Just incase you went off on a nerd rage and didnt read my second post (which came before this one)
Just to be sure, im not angry i cant play the game or anything of the sort, on the contrary, i just wanted to voice my concerns over, us paying for a service that isnt going to be rendered lol. im really upset over what happened in japan lol, not just some kid QQing because of his service fees. and im actually shocked that theyre not billing us for april. THAT just restored ALL of my faith in SE >_>.... see it was slowly coming back with this new dev team in place, and now that just did it for me.
i would GLADLY donate my april scrip fees to the disaster (as would all FFXI loving players), and if SE was willing to go dollar for dollar towards what was donated, it would be an immense help im sure. probably something for SE PR/Accounting to set up (wouldnt be hard for them to go dollar for dollar either lol, theyd just need to donate march or mays scrip fees :P)

What has been said by some of the people on here is just sad to see. I wish nothing but the best for all of those affected over in Japan with the situation(s) they are presently facing. Also, I wanna thank the Japanese for many of the things I enjoy today, not just XI, but Video games and Anime as well. I don't know what I would without them. Thank you again, and I wish you all the best. You will be in my prayers.

the servers in California are lobby servers not game servers, sure they could leave up the lobby servers but that would be pointless wouldnt it? as for them conserving electricity.....didnt you hear, they just had a tsunami and major quakes in Japan, there are lives lost, and the count of just how much is not known, if you wanna game go find something else to play till XI returns, SE is complying with their government and nobody knows how long it will be

For those who are still ignorant to the whole situation, should look at these videos to get a sense of what has happened.

doubt they are doing it for humanitarian reasons Uhm, servers take a LOT of power. The game Second Life for example, requires as much power to run for a year as the COUNTRY OF BRAZIL. So, maybe they use a bit more than you think.
Well now, time to pray for those of us who believe in God... after disasters always come hard times so I hope our Japanese friends will find courage and strengh to overcome this.
... and I'm from Canada, so North America as well... we're not all selfish please don't think we're all heartless :( Uhm, maybe those of us that pray should pray for everyone, not JUST the people who believe in a god?
Gonna stop you here.
You've never personally met a single person who died @ pearl harbor. There is a player in my LS that is in his 70s, which means it is technically possible to have met someone who died in Pearl Harbor.

You got a point here.
In my opinion, however, placing all the servers at the same place looks like a bad IT approach for any worldwide service (regardless of where that place is). If they had active distributed servers, at least half of them would be fully operational by now. That would also facilitate the execution of a disaster recovery plan (less servers to be redirected) and, in the worst case, the outage would be partial. It's no rocket science.
Given the current situation in Japan, shutting down the servers wasn't just the right thing to do - it was the OBVIOUS thing. Anybody with minimum common sense understands it.
Staying away from FFXI for a few weeks will not hurt, not a big deal for me. But I think SE should also learn something from this episode. I'm pretty sure they're losing much more than us.

If you are in the U.S. you can donate $10 by texting REDCROSS to 90999. More info and other ways to donate at RedCross.org (http://american.redcross.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ntld_main&s_src=F8HWA002).

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan, and i hope that the Japanese players I have had the pleasure to meet in my years in Vanadiel and their families are safe and well, and also the SE employees and their families who make it possible to have a game to play. This isn't just about whether servers are up or not, the people that operate them have families and loved ones that may have been affected by this disaster. This isn't to downplay any other disaster that has hit the world , i.e. Katrina or 9/11, but this is the one that has affected the most people in the Final Fantasy community.

How do you know this? Are you an accountant for SE? Also Japan shouldnt have to borrow money from anyone.. Money is a theoretical substance, not a real object. Its not that they wouldnt have the resources to rebuild its that they wouldnt have "money" to accumulate the resources.. Which is silly.. Everything is so limited because of "money" but in reality much more is possible when putting "money" to the side.
In reality they could hire people and pay them, money WAS and IS created from the mind, thin air.. not nature.

Very good, however I don't agree with these charities and having to donate money. They of course need "money" to fund the workers, food, gas and operations of course. However why is money the issue, if there is food, water, gas to be given but there is no money.. Where is the donation? It's not actually a donation.. Even in donating its not really donating, someone is still profiting. I agree with helping people, I just dont agree with money being the main factor behind everything. Really sad. Japan can rebuild im sure, if they arent able to rebuild its not because they dont have the technology or people who want to work it because of a lack of an imaginary theoretical material called "money", which has plagued the Earth.

People are gonna hate this post, please understand my intention is not to troll...
Maybe its time to spread out your servers SE...
Sucks about Japan, really a horrible situation which should be addressed and dealt with, but as a paying consumer who plays to engage in an escapist fantasy world, I am disappointed that FFXI is down. Obviously there is nothing to do but focus on the tragedy and help those who have lost loved ones and who are still missing, but as things have already unfolded i would like to say that perhaps it is time to spread out your servers in case this happens again.
As selfish as this sounds, we do not need to suffer for SE's poor management decision to have all servers running in one of the most environmentally skewed countries in the world. MMO's are games that are global, and therefore, SE should aim to globalize its game. Like most other MMO's, servers are spread out across the world for many logical reasons. I'm not sure why SE has never followed chase, but perhaps it should.
99% sure SE will never move their servers, but something worth being mad about... just saying.

You have a point. However, at this point it is very difficult for actual supplies to be crated over the ocean and distributed over there at the present. (apparently Candles and AA batteries are at a premium) That is why the monetary donations are the important thing - at the present time.
No one HAS to donate. I am because I already have the money budgeted. Once the immediate situation has quieted down, I'll be finding out how to send supplies over, as I really feel I have too much "normal stuff" and not enough "green stuff". =]

I'd like to point out to people reading here that just because someone posts in this thread using the English language does not automatically make them American. Some folks are too quick to make assumptions. Considering all the people in Europe, North and South America, as well as China, India, and other countries that speak English, I wouldn't be surprised if Americans represented under 25% of the English speakers of the world. Pet peeve of mine I had to address first. ^^
I fully understand and agree with why SE decided it was best for their company to close their servers to help their nation conserve on electricity. Aside from a month's worth of service fees, they'll probably lose a few customers over the decision as well, but not only was it a question of doing "the right thing", they likely realized that they couldn't guarantee their service regardless. Imagine how upset you'd be if you were playing as normal, camping some mob with that less then 1% drop item you've always wanted that actually drops this time... only to have a rolling blackout hit the SE servers and the game goes down without saving your progress.
I had plans to meet up with friends tonight @ 4pm for a Dynamis Windurst run. Obviously we'll all be doing different things tonight instead. Some of us are chatting in IRC, others are adrift who knows where. Hopefully the trolls here will be banned and we can do a lil weeding on the forums during this time off from the game. ^^

SE has a lot of issues to deal with. This disaster is just another problem piled on their plate. If after their recovery, they have the finances to learn from their mistakes, I hope they can.

Ok, well after readin this and thinkin bout all the jerks and self centered people and the ruthless comments like Umbrion
people like that make me disgusted but hey thats what the human race has become now day. . . grow up n get a life if thats how u think honestly as Far as ur comment Zidian now... if u think hard and realize you dont make a multibillion dollar game with out some sort of back up server located away from the main server .. . . which im sure SE has done long long ago. but honestly There main concern isnt ffxi or ff 14 like ur is obviously n between the main headquaters n japan and n cali im sure they will fix the problem in time but right now stop cryin bout not having the game n stead worry bout what u can do to help them and get things better etc.. . am i mad a little but guess what nothing we can do bout it cause like someone said earlier Its a natural disaster You cant stop that , you shouldnt be worryin bout a damn game atm rather what effect if anything further goes wrong in japan how thats gonna effect us and the economy... better yet Hawaiii/ cali since there next door to japan. stop worryin bout ur self for a second and the game which yes WE ALL LOVE TO PLAY
worry bout others for a change donate some money for crist sake or something to help them out, you realize japan is one of the major trades to the US if japan goes think of how fast the economy will be effected where u live...
FOr the ppl who defended whats going on atleast u have some humanity. for those who are crying cause They shut ff down for a week if not longer to worry bout THERE NATURAL problem and POWER.... GROW UP
the current event in japan has not only effected japan it has effect cali/hawii/ parts of the east coast.... so seriously think before u speak. but gonna leav eit there before i say things i shouldnt cause you guys have disgusted me n your the reason some people are the way they are today thanks

when has ANY country sent support to help us? when has ANY country came to OUR aide in a time of natural disaster?
This moron from that locked thread can go jump into an active volcano. 97+ countries either offered aide or gave aide during Hurricane Katrina... I may not have read down enough, but I was so shocked by their total lack of education. How do you post something so blatantly not true on the internet without using some search forum to do a bit of research. It took me 2 minutes to find the information and count the countries, and what those countries offered us. One person from Japan alone donated a million dollars to the red cross during our hard time.
I am just completely shocked by people. Has anyone heard about the people finder on google being spammed by disgusting people, falsely trolling the people finder and "confirming" people as dead? Also being horrible to their families, and stating how they were doing graphic things to their loved-one's bodies. You can go to the people finder and search "A" and see just how absolutely horrible some people ( I can't even think of them as people they are MONSTERS) can be toward their fellow man. I was up until 6 am changing their status' back to what they should be so some older loved one with not-so-much internet experience wouldn't believe these awful things.
To Japan and also to SE I want to express my deepest sorrow that this tragedy has befallen unto you. I will gladly donate anything I can toward your relief effort. If I were rich in any sense, I would be able to donate more. I gave my time last night, and feel horrible that I didn't make it even to the E's before I became overwhelmed. I can only begin to imagine your suffering, and fear for the future. From my family to your nation, we hope that you all find some sort of peace during this time of turmoil. Words cannot express how we feel, and hurt for your losses.
Please forgive my long rant. I have been deeply saddened by this, and shocked at some monsters' reactions to this event. I lie awake at night, and worry about some mother worrying about her lost child. I can just go and check on mine and cry and hold her.. not knowing what I would do should this happen to her. I also have friends in Japan in the military who are doing what they can, and also a friend who was teaching in Tagajo City who played ffxi (Shamaya on Asura). He was missing for a time, but his mother heard from him today, and so far he is ok at the school. (Living off chips and candy). Such small blessings need to be counted for so much during such times that grief could overwhelm a person. /endrant

I for one, don't hate your post and I understand what you're saying. I took a break from reading the forums today to color my friend's hair and cut her husband's hair and go out to dinner with them. Surprise! I have a RL! Anyway, her husband is an IT buff who works IT for a couple places. One of them, he's part of a disaster recovery plan. Meaning, if something happened to their servers in Arizona and they lost everything, what would they do? He said it would take 2 days to get some things up and running, and another 4 days to have everything running as normal with new servers and data recovery at the new location. He suspects that SE is telling us a week because they are planning on migrating. It sounds about right to me if the Power Company is Japan is planning on rotating blackouts through at least the end of April to conserve energy and prevent massive blackouts. This would mean SE is migrating to either another country temporarily or to at least another section of Japan that may not be affected by this. I can only speculate. It's either that or they don't want to make us too angry that it's going to be longer than a week (which would by why they're going to wave April's monthly fee I guess). But all we can do is see what happens. I won't be on here in a week wondering what's going on. Things might get worse in Japan before they get better for all we know... and if that happens, they're going to need all the prayers from as many people as possible (no matter how you pray or who you pray too... spiritual strength is definitely needed during this time).
I agree that people should not be mad for some of us thinking about this stuff. Some of us are just business minded like that and not just being "selfish". I"m sorry that I'm not one of those people with my eyes stuck on the TV or disaster videos on the internet. I honestly can't handle watching destruction and suffering of that magnitude for more than about 20 minutes. It just becomes too much for me. That's not entertainment.

This is a wise decision. And in this time of crisis it REMINDS us that this game is not what is important; LIFE is. When Japan is able to resume some normalcy, then MAYBE they can re-open the servers, but for now, focus on getting things back in order. The Playground known as Vana'Diel won't go away anytime soon, and we can come back whenever, but when things like this happens you step back and focus on reality. Yeah yeah, I know, preaching to the converted; but I'm glad that they are doing this. My prayers go out to those victimized by this catastrophe, both in Japan and the entire Pacific Rim.
Quoted by Umbrion:
This will upset a lot of people and i am one of them, hope your feed back center is ready to work double over time.. and i hope when a quake hits North America you shut down the game again just to see the response from are friends over the ocean.
They will probably want to send us relief aid as well (doubtful, but very MUCH possible) if such a thing happens. That's all I'll say to that.

I think your missing the point Kraatos.
We DO care about what happened and we DO heavily sympathize with the tragic loss of life. There is just something to be said about how our lives could have avoided being impacted like this if SE had planned better.
My particular comment was to help SE realize that when you run a massive scale game like this you need backup servers all over the world (Something they CLEARLY don't have).
I also don't agree with you that we need to throw ourselves into helping Japan, Im sorry but not everyone believes in globalization or can bring themselves to sympathize with strangers. I think thats perfectly normal and you should respect peoples decision to politely refrain from donating money. You may think your right and righteous for throwing money at the Japans cause, but do not tell people what is right and wrong when you have no frame of reference.

No im not missing ur point Zidian, my point is to you SE has made billions from FFxi... do you really truely think they made a came that is a multibillion dollar game... One of the most played games of all... with out creating a back up server located where there other headquaters are , and im simply saying is yes im sure they have but htere focus is not FFXI period.
And as far as what u said ur right but my point is to some dont sit there and blah blah blah oh they shut down ffxi... wah wah wah think bout what effect this could have In the aera u live.... if something more dramatic and severe happens... There goes alot of major trades for the US, i was simply saying think more bout them then a dumb game.

Im not going to say I don't care about what happened over in Japan, bc I do, and I'm sorry it happened, but America has had hurricanes hit the gulf, earthquakes left and right, the towers etc, and you don't see them suspending any activity over there for us. Its stupid of SE to even think that they would be able to just center FF11 in Japan and then cut them down bc of an event that affects them. They need to make more stations to help keeping their services going. Just bc your neighbor stubs his toe, doesn't mean he should come next door and make you stop doing something you spend your time on.

I guess u forgot how to read.... Cause i know ur point my point is im almost certain they have a back up server stationed out side of japan.... BUT RIGHT NOW there focus is not FINAL FANTASY....
not saying i dont get what your saying or i dont understand im saying you dont make a freakin multibillion dollar game with out some sort of back up server stationed away form teh main Server.... like i said which they prolly have but right now is not the focus to make a phone call to have it utrned on its more worried bout there own problems atm
what more can u ask for or want that they are already waving aprils fee???? wnat them to give u billions of gil too...
