I'm here in Purgonorgo Isle skilling shield like crazy by just standing in front of a bunch of mobs I pulled. You don't even need to engage and you skill up like mad; I just went from 91 to 130 in about an hour. I recall standing here months ago in my attempt to skill guarding, which took me 5-6 hours to achieve half the results.
The following source shows that the developers are "looking into" parrying and guarding skillups:
Adjustments to Gaining Guarding and Parrying Skill: Community Rep Comment (http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/threads/12417-Adjustments-to-gaining-Parry-Skill...what-about-Guard/page2?highlight=Skill+rate)
No update after this comment has mentioned anything about adjusting parrying/guarding skillups. Please correct me if I'm wrong, though. I certainly haven't noticed a change other then them adding the new skill up earrings.
If the problem is with balance, shield is currently more imbalanced, at least in comparison to guarding with skillups, which essentially performs the same function: reducing damage taken. Perhaps there's a grip or other item that monk can wear in the future that increases guarding chances dramatically at the expense of not reducing damage taken. Parrying jobs could receive a similar item that allows for greatly improved parrying at the cost of taking damage. One can infer that if forcing yourself to parry or guard an attack that isn't ideal, then taking more damage as a result should be expected. Since you would lose the perks of performing a guard or parry when wearing these items, they'd solely be used to skill up and couldn't be taken advantage of.
I'd like a status update Camate. Thank you.
P.S. After typing this up I'm now 141 shield. /sigh
