Would it be possible for the Devs to add a:
"Use Forbidden Key" option while you have the menu open for a chest?
Sometimes chests are on top of each other, or time is running out, and exiting the menu and then targeting the same chest can be difficult because of how the chests are spawned on top of each other
I have no idea if this is a complicated suggestion from a programming perspective, but would be extremely helpful to those of us that cleave on a regular basis and have to figure out which of 20 chests we want to open.

This is a really good idea for its convenience, but I don't think it's possible in this game.
There's no place where interaction removes items from your inventory passively that I can think of, and I don't think it wise to implement that kind of design. From a development standpoint, anything that expends items should require direct action like trading the item; believe it or not, the way it is currently is just safe game design.

Cutscenes, bcnms, clicking on a ??? for a pop monster (mostly in abyssea)....no you're right, its not possible, and no place in the game does it.
It's been suggested before time and again but nothing has ever come of it. I do think it's probably technically possible. I'm pretty sure if the system can remove gil from your pockets for stuff, it can for items. But there is such a thing as too much convenience. I say this as a warrior who cleaves, constantly, there are consequences to cleaving to be suffered. That's why when I do it I make sure I'm never the one opening chests.
And when I am opening chests I'm using a controller so it's probably easier for me for accuracy purposes and I could see this adjustment being really helpful to the KB user, but KB users are always so defensive about their KBs so I'm sure things are just peachy for them and don't need no help from nobody.

Unfortunately, the code required to make it possible expend keys from the chest menu would interfere with the four lines of code that prevent every NPC in Vana'Diel from transforming into a Tropical Rarab.
Yes, prevent. I don't get it either.

Cutscenes and ??? for popped NMs remove key items, not normal items. Any time a cutscene or pop NM removes a normal item, or when entering a BCNM, you have to TRADE the item to the spot... just like you currently have to do for forbidden keys.
