View Full Version : Cell Phone APP

I don't think anyone ever posted something like this, I did on killing ifrit but only got on reply.
So was wondering maybe SE should make a cellphone app to link to friend lists, linkshells and what not. One thing I love playing FFXI is because of my friends, if it wasn't for them the game wouldn't be the same and wouldn't be as fun. Too complicated? Maybe but totally worth it. What you think? Is it too much to ask?

I'll post in here as opposed to a new thread. I would like to see either an app like this or the Twitter account used to announce when the servers come back up. Now that I'm not in an HNM it would be preferable to sitting there and spamming the log-in screen.

I'd also like to see a mobile authenticator app so we don't have to carry around a POL authenticator

Yes it works on phones but that's not what I meant, it is nice to carry a friend list but that's just a web site I meant an actual app and preferably one where you can communicate with linkshell members, like a portable linkshell messenger kind of thing.
Oh and yes I do agree with that authenticator idea as well, for android too lol

I never used friend list plus but I would rather have more cell phone apps. I know there is one already out but its not that great and its not for communication.
Communication app for linkshell and friendlist (I would settle for friendlist at least)
Mobile auth (because buying it and then not being able to replace the battery and use it again for 10 bucks is bs)
Including Android
More mobile support in general for these (maybe) future addons and for the services they already have.
Ever since I got a smart phone its just too easy to do what I would have done in the past. If I want to check my email I just turn on my internet and if I have any new emails I get the notifcation. I dont have to sit down in front of my keyboard and log it. Its all streamline to my phone and I am control it and use it where ever I please. The fast they have more support and more mobile the better this well be.
Also if they do add all this mobile features, I bet more newer players will show up at least.
Also, again, I will forgive Square Enix for betraying us and making FFXIV. All will be forgive SE, just make mobile and all is fair.

A mobile app would be cool however, we can't use it to replace the FOB. Thats the whole purpose of the authenticator: no communication link to any server/internet device whatsoever. If you had a mobile FOB on your smartphone, then it would be accessed over the internet and someone could potentially corrupt the authenticator system,

WoW did it right. Its a game that makes Billions and I haven't read anything yet about the auths being caught. FFXI wont have the hacking power against them as they would WoW. So if the large majority of WoW players are safe, then I am sure we would be just fine with the same kind of auth.
I mean my WoW account has not been used in 2 years and I have been hacked twice. My inactive account for 3 years has been hacked twice in 1 year. One of the times it was used to do gold buying/selling shouts in a place in the scale of port jueno of importance (to current game importance I mean). got banned, contacted me, I called them and laughed because I said I haven't played in 2 years. Then 3 months later my account was hacked again and the person sold my account off to someone. I called them up, told them what happened, and then I got my account back and they told me to use the auth. Since then my account has been just fine. I don't play WoW. I haven't paid for it in 3 years. But with what their auth does, you cant ignore that kind of service. Plus it was free, and it takes just one phone call to get your account back to where it was if it was hacked without having the auth and everything is put back to normal to where you had it last. You cant beat/fight that kind of service.

I'm more interested in the social aspects of the advantages this app would give us. The idea came from when I had to quit the game for a while because I lost my job and couldn't pay for the game and I was the leader of a linkshell, so I looked for ways to contact them but it was barely any good. The social networks weren't enough. Somewhere along that time I just got the smart phone android which had recently came out and I searched for a "ffxi linkshell app" and I actually found one but it turned out to be a big let down because it was useless and defective.
If I were a tech nerd or a programmer or had the remote idea on how to make apps I would work hard to create one that serves this purpose. Friend lists, email messaging, and status updates would only be bonuses to this app IMO and messaging would be more of my interests. Why not just use one of the existing messengers? Because you can't expect your friends to always be online chatting through messengers AND not everyone prefers the same messenger program and in the same chat session. This could maybe be another extension to the existing Linkshell Community SE has created. Being able to switch through all your LSs and chat with them in real time even if you're not logged in game, there is a lot of possibilities with only that one function.
Of course this should be implemented in FFXIV as well...

I know some time back there was a project with chatting in Jeuno via someone's mule. All the shouts and say got posted on a website and you could type things in to have the mule say in shout. It would be pretty neat if we could have a cell phone app that lets you interact with a populated area in shout if you have a character. I guess it would be too easily abused but it would be great fun... even if we couldn't interact just to see what people are saying in town when you're bored but can't log in.

After reading this I decided to search my apps store, and WoW does have an app that allows players to communicate via their mobile phones. For SE it wouldnt be too hard to accomodate. update LS community to allow registered and logged in members to see chat from LS/friends etc. This way you wouldnt even need an app, just goto browser and log into pol community and you can talk to everyone no matter where you are. Maybe something SE could look into.

This would be great. If all it did was give access to chat with friends/linkshell it would be awesome. Other features such as viewing AH would be nice to haves, but the main thing I miss about the game right now are my friends there.

I program applications for both Android and iPhone, and with a little bit of work, it would be possible to send /tell and /linkshell.. The downside is you would have to have a character logged in on your computer with a little server app running in the background.
If there is a lot of interest, I could start working on a little side project for it.

Being able to see and post to LS chat and/or tells in game would be awesome to have in a phone app. Though definitely without the requirement of having to be logged in on a PC would be ideal after all can't control getting back on if you get disconnected for any reason.

So what you're saying is someone would have to hack your smartphone and then get the generated key before you can put it into the login screen?
How about how someone can hack your computer, prevent the login from actually being sent, and log the key you just tried to send to PoL?
How is either of them actually safer? Sorry I don't like false senses of security.

If they made FL+ an app, they would have to make it for every system, not just the android/lolphone market. A lot of systems still use windows and what ever the hell suckberries use.

Those are also the minority of the "Smart Phone App" market today. Blackberry lesser so but that is typically in its own market. I don't disagree it should work on more than just 2 markets but its best to test the waters on the biggest 2 to see if the app would even be worth developing for the other systems regardless of there being a price or be free it will still cost a programmer's time.

I totally agree with you on that, it's mainly android and iphone the bigger markets right now, they're the most capable ones.
