View Full Version : Why are skill up rates so atrocious?

What's the point of being able to level up so quickly but it takes a ridiculous amount of time to skill up your combat/magic skills? Skill up foods don't seem to do much either.

Because skilling up wasn't adjusted to the new way people level... or rather people don't care about skilling up, only leveling. This is why there is skill up food, equipment, and kupo power "Martial Mastery". It's not that hard to cap many skills though, unless it's something like parrying, enhancing magic and summoning magic... the ones that's always been difficult.
Cap skills use to be something only people dedicated to their job(s) that used that particular skill to benefit from... to complain about it when you can get to level 95 in two days and skill levels past 230 and break a latent trial weapon within hours over it...

Puppetmaster skillup may be the worst thing designed since Voidwatch.

Yeah, capping any skill is easy whether it's summoning magic or parrying. It's tedious. Martial Mastery and skill up foods seem to do little also. I can't say for gear as nothing looks less fun as days of chest farming. What harm is there in raising the rate of skills to go along with rates of XP now?

Where would one go to cap skills 300+ not inside aby?
pick a GoV zone. any one with pages designed for 90+.

Neither do I... summoning magic doesn't work that way either. On the plus side, thanks to voidwatch, I'll be hitting cap again. 12 more levels to go. >.<

Seventy-five million years ago, an evil galactic ruler "Xenu" massacres millions of people and is assisted by "Chu", the Executive President of the Galactic Interplanetary Bank, and "Chi", the Galactic Minister of Police. Xenu's psychiatric advisers "Stug" and "Sty" help him gather "unwanted" beings from all of the planets in his control and transport them to Earth. The beings are stacked around the bases of Earth's volcanoes including Loa, Mount Vesuvius, Mount Shasta, Mount Fuji, Mount Etna and others, and exterminated with planted charges of atomic bombs. Great winds raced simultaneously across the face of Earth, spreading tales of destruction...Xenu's massacre of these beings is called "Phase III".
And that's more or less why skill-up rates are so darned low!

cambat skills gain are extremely fast with skill up food. Evasion 0~396 took 30 minute on mule THF ( altepa, mandy train). H2H skill took 1 h for 1~200 ( outside, with food, its alomost 100% skill up rate untill 100) and another hour 200->cap. its easy for dualwield jobs, and with all the multi hit atma... Enffebling/flute, took 2h from 200 to 396 with sp food. Not too slow. Things like parry guard enhancing etc still suck, not that I care as they are semi useless. Only fix needed imo is summonning.

It's to leave the game with a timesink..have to have something to soak up your time outside of actual proper stuff to do, they have added things to help but it's still really slow which shows they intend to try keep it that way.

I usually see SMNs leveling skill in the Paradox just before Shinryu. Unlimited time to exploit the refresh atmas for extra skillups off bloodpact buffs.
For enhancing, level npc fellow to max and spam buffs on them.
For parry... yeah it's a pain.

Summoning is the biggest pain for me. I got something like 2 levels per hour spamming spirits, or 4 levels per hour spamming BPs on VT mobs. Parrying with Phalanx and a hoard of mandies is quite a bit faster than that.

lol what? pup is hard to skill up? get a percolator and done. I litterally hit 95 with almost capped skills thanks to that attachment.

And this is where most summoners fail. =\ I don't see much point in spamming summons and blood pacts. In most general application, skill up come more noticeably from using the job naturally. Using Gardua's fleet wind to travel. Pre-buffing parties and actively participating in fights. Believe me, if I were on SMN as much as I use to be, my summoning magic would have already been capped. But even then that would have taken maybe 1 week or two compared to combat skills.
Plus, I've had my summoning magic capped at 75 before cap increase via besiege spam, then capped at 90 when I came back through abyssea 95 will mostly be by pure luck and/or through voidwatch. Most smn I know who picked up the job haven't even gotten past the original 75 cap yet and those that have haven't even broke past 300 on the natural level without merits and equipment.

If they'd allowed skillups in Walk of Echoes then I'd be capped too. I use summoner in two places, and one of them doesn't allow skillups.
Soranika

I think every summoner would easily cap summoning magic in Walk of Echoes.
Right now I find myself only reall on SMN as of late to do WoE (once in a blue moon), using Alexander on old endgame and new bosses when asked, and voidwatch. I can't really remember why I would be on SMN anymore outside of those events. =\ It's saddening... for three years it was my only 95 job but now I've taken liking to DNC and I get put on WHM duty inside abyssea.

Buy skillup food. That stuff is ridiculous.
Only if you define ridiculous as in "barely noticeable". Honestly, I tried to be fair and bought it and tried it for casting, no go. Tried it for guard/parry, again no go.
I see more difference with martial master than skill up ring + earring +food (all at the same time)
I am sure it does something, but nothing worth my time to parse the minor difference.

Someone mentioned to me that the NQ skill up food say for example Saltenas only worked up to a certain skill lvl and beyond that skill lvl you would need the HQ Elshenas. So for example say that certain skill lvl is X, then from 0-X in skill lvls you'll get a nice performance out of Saltenas however once passed skill lvl X you need to buy the Elshenas to get that kind of performance.
^
Huge possibility that what was said to me was a giant lie like all things based on hearsay. Never had a problem skilling up weaps for my war with a few mandies and retaliation so i never even tried to eyeball the difference between NQ and HQ foods.

Elshenas, 276 skill (shield) to 382, Parry 240 to 262.

My last attempt to quantify the effects of skillup food was inconclusive. Neither Saltena nor Elshena had any detectable effect on my Parrying skillup rate (skillups/parry) or the size of skillups (skill/skillup).
It's possible I was over the skill cap for Elshena already (started at 335 parrying).

Skilling up is very easy. With just spending a few hours you can get melee skills from 1 to 250.

Elshenas, 276 skill (shield) to 382, Parry 240 to 262.
Well, i was using that other, cheaper food because I had no actual data on the potency of it, and didn't feel like being a guinea pig. I got something like 50 shield skill over 3 hours, along with 2-3 parry on PLD92 getting smacked on by 3-4 DC mandies. Started at around 230 shield.

From the Test Server update performed on 10/28/2011, it will be possible to skill up in Walk of Echoes battles.
This was implemented in order to test skill increases in various other battle content. Please understand that this is not a guarantee that Walk of Echoes will receive this change in the future.
Well, this is a step in the right direction if they implement it as it makes no sense to let us XP with 0 chance of skill gain.

Buy skillup food. That stuff is ridiculous.Well when teh A+ cap was 361, you could cap it on the birds in misareaux. I was out there last week skilling 300+ staff on war with food. I went through 4 of them only getting 1.1 levels. You're right, that is ridiculous.
