I posted this on the Tech Support section, but i think it is probably more appropriate here since its not really tech support.

I just noticed Sony just added a PlayStation 2 classics catalog in PSN. Will there be a possibility of having FFXI on PSN and playable on PS3 slim?

Let me put it another way as well, if you put it on PSN, I will definitely buy it again just like I bought it again on Steam because I miss playing this game sitting on a couch away from the TV!

Hm...I'm not too tech savvy, and I still have the first ps3 model, so I can't really say this with much certainty but, wouldn't it use an awful large amount of hard drive if it wasn't on a disc? Last time I checked I could have sworn that FFXI and each expansion took around 10gigs of hard drive. 40-50 gigs or so isn't much for a computer, because how many games do you play that take up 40gigs or more of space? On a console though, with saves and demos and other downloaded games...

I can see it working, it probably would work too, but you would need quite the hefty hard drive on it.
Unless of course I miscounted a number on the amount of space XI took up on my old computer. In which case, disregard this post lol

Biggest problem I see is that it'd effect FFXIV sales when (or if!) it hits PS3.

The only flipside is that people who want a taste of an MMO might like to try out FFXI before picking up it's shiny sibling. That's how I started on XI but I ain't moving to XIV anytime soon.

I thought exactly the same thing when I saw the PS2 titles pop up on the store but SE has broken my heart before.

Oh yeah and wasn't the problem that slim can't read the discs? Therefore no disc - no problem?

Yes, I thought of that, but you need the game disc in the ps2 to play it, right? I believe most of the data is stored on the disc and not the ps2 itself, right? I could be wrong :X I just brought up my main concern, because either way you cut it its still a lot of space and other games and their expansion packs (If skyrim was to have one...imagine the space O.O) will only be taking up more.

I think it has more to do with the game already being on ps2 and not worth the man power put in a ps2 vwrsrdo to diminishing returns. The only reason there is a Xbox 360 version is because there was no Xbox version before it. But yeah putting this on PSN would be a great idea.

Put into a ps3 version* is what that should say. Stupid cell phone.

No. You don't need the disc at all after installing it onto the PS2 HDD.

I think the PS2 Classics on PSN are converted to PS3, if that is done for FFXI, would be great. And yes, the game files are huge, but not unreasonable. Steam store is a <4GB package for download. That is typical for any PS3 game being sold on PSN. Look at Games on Demand on Xbox live, they are in the GB range.

Also FFXI is 10GB big total size including all expansions. Sony is or has end PS2 system support. This is a good opportunity to drop PS2 FFXI and port it over to the PS2 Classics on PSN. I think most people who own PS2 already on either a PS3, 360 or both.

Well I DOUBT they will port FFXI to the PS3 slim. Reason I say that is, even on my old school PS3, what happens is, they have a download that lets you run ps2 HD mode. Then that lets me install my PS2 FFXI to it. Now I am fairly sure they would have to recode everything to make it work on a PS3 port. Since the old 60-80GB models have PS2 support in them already. It was just easy for them.

However.... you really arent missing much. =( I tried FFXI on my PS3.. and man... that looked HORRIBLE. Overstretched and pixelated. Best you could do with it, is solo farm and craft. You wouldnt want to get into a serious party.

However, If you were playing FFXI on your PS2 with a old school CRT TV (Like my Samsung GX) 14' and so, it looks fine. Thats the issue with large TVs that focus on super res.. they just make the old things look bad.

Wtf are you smoking. FFXI on PC runs about 8gb fully updated. On PS2 it's around 3-4gb.

Anyways, I don't see FFXI ever hitting it as a PS2 Classics primarily because it's a subscription based title, especially when things with POL are going to be changing once they completely phase out payment via it. I'd rather they just do a proper no-frills port to the PS3/Vita and sell it as such.

So 6-7 probably for PS2.

I wish there was 50 gigs to be had. That would be the most epic MMO of all time where no one could ever utter the words "there's nothing to do" or risk being dragged out to the street and shot for doom mongering.

PS2 harddrives are 40G, so 50 gigs of data is impossible for this game. Second I played FFXI via 60G PS3 for years, and I didn't have space issues at all til I started buying games off PSN. Third, I honestly can see SE putting the game up on PSN, because as it has been seen throughout the years SE loves money, and remakes, and reissues, so I expect it especially seeing as 14 is still super failga.

Thing I hated about PS2 version... how long updates took on it. God I do miss the old days of playing FFXI on 56k on ps2 tho. Those were good days. Patch all night. Lol.

Now if they would only port FFXI to PS3 in true form... but then MS 360 would cry foul. Think they had the license for it.

Well I saw on IGN's daily fix (14th October) that FFXIV on PS3 gets another beta in November 2012. Kinda nerfs my earlier comment about FFXI on PSN effecting XIV sales.

So in summary I believe a PSN release would boost the player base and give PS3 users a taste of MMO before XIV lands. Also I will be able to play on my sofa instead of on the Ikea office chair in front of my PeeCee!! (or I need to splash out on a lappy with a graphics card!)
