View Full Version : Spell progress bar blocks macros

I thought I'd read somewhere that SE was going to fix this. In the current client GUI, the progress bar for spell casting blocks out the first 3 or so spots of the macro bar, making it impossible to read. Any plans to fix?

People actually need to read their macro bar at all, much less while casting? News to me. I memorize my macros.

Pretty much was exactly what I was coming in here to say.

Multiple jobs, many of which use 60-80 macros. Nice that you've got yours memorized but no excuse for sloppy interface design. And really, it would take what, 5 mins to recode the position of that progress bar?

You'd be surprised.

Moving it would make the bar deal 9999 damage to Undead and we'd all be out of a game for another 16 hours.

Yes, I would be surprised. The design effort would be miniscule. The testing effort would be larger BUT made much easier using the test server.

Pretty much changing a variable and that's it. I cannot actually believe SE's coding is so horribly bad as everyone says it is. I do not want to insult them that badly.

There's a box in the upper left part of the screen that is not blocked out that will display the name of a macro above that casting bar(you can scroll through it with the KB like you can a controller) Whether that was there or not or not a help with smaller resolutions by chance, why do you need to see? You can't do anything except move around while you're casting anyway until it's done. And in time most people should be able to get used to where macros are at and remember what is where. Even if they don't, again, why would a person need to see their macros while casting?

I'm not trying to belittle you here like how others might, but if the issue is really as simple as you're leading on, I think it might just be in your mind that there's an actual problem to be fixed. Unless I'm forgetting something. I did get up really early today with only 4 hours of sleep or so. But that's why I'm asking why you need to see your macros. Maybe I want to see my macros, too.

The reason you need to see your macros is to prepare for your next action. Also, the spell progress bar will continue to run to 100% even when you've already cast due to various fast casting effects - you are actually ready to cast again even though the bar is still progressing.

An thanks for pointing out that box in the upper left hand corner! LOL i've played since the NA PC launch and never noticed that! Doh!!

if you dont remember what your macros are, yous hould consider playing your job more often.

I guess it's time for the fanboys to support SE's sloppy design.

The spell cast bar also blocks ability to see the item list. But, I guess people are supposed to know whats on the top of the list (which changes dynamically with temp items).

Fairly sure I could tell you all of my ctrl+alt 1-3 macros on each macro set for each of my jobs. I've never even concidered this a problem.

Forgot to mention something in my prior post...

I thought I'd read somewhere that SE was going to fix this.

You were probably thinking of the adjustment they made to allow you to view the radar/clock/weather while mid-battle (which was done months ago). I've yet to hear of any other adjustments they planned for the GUI.

That annoys me more than blocking the macro bar. But either way, it's just needlessly annoying. I'm guessing they did it this way because they were running out of space on the PS2 screen at low resolution. I'd love if they changed it.

I will not disagree that these aspects of the interface are rather flawed. However, it is a flaw that only shows itself when it matters little to not at all to most people, so I'd stick it on the low priority list of UI fixes. If we get a fix, that's great though.

Wow at anyone being against moving the progress bar. Are you guys masochists or something? Memorising macros works for simple jobs like SAM or WAR, but if you're a mage and use jumps between palettes (let's say 1 macro named Barspells moves you to another palette with all barspell macros, or all storms, or all T1 nukes (or all Fire nukes, etc.) for Voidwatch) it would be actually big game UI improvement.
Also, while we're at it, it would be nice to see active weather when engaged (magian trials), current day and current time of the day (Neo-Dreamlands-Dynamis) also when engaged.

And yes, this UI improvement was promised, I remember it well. And still waiting.

Please find the source of where it was promised, because this is the first i've even heard any complaints about it.

It doesn't exactly fall under good interface design, I just don't personally find it disruptive. I've never had to look at my macro bar and read what's in the first slots while casting a spell. This is mage jobs we're talking about, not melee, and I've never had an issue. I'm not against fixing it, it's just not important.

Wasn't on the forums. The talk of GUI improvements were in tweets posted back in February.

2 from February 15th

Now that the minor version update has launched, we're moving full steam ahead towards the next major version update!

That being said, we're currently planning adjustments to the radar and other info that is hidden while in the midst of battle!

Two from February 16th

We've received feedback asking for modifications so that the cast gauge and status icons aren't hidden by the macro palette. (1/2)

However, compared to the radar hiding in battle, there are more restrictions on what we can modify, but we’ll continue to investigate.

There you go. They never promised to change it, but they did say they would look into it, and a few other GUI improvements earlier this year.
