Steps:
1. Log into Final Fantasy with "Start in Windowed Mode" in FFXI Config unchecked.
2. Press Alt+tab, Alt+Esc or Ctrl+Alt+Del on the keyboard
3. Client crashes to PlayOnline Viewer with error "Terminated as error occured in Final Fantasy XI. Full-screen mode was lost.(-1)"

Hopefully this isn't too painfully obvious, but these should either do what they are supposed to do and switch windows or minimize windows without crashing the game, or they should be captured by the client so that they don't cause a crash.
The current windowed mode option in settings isn't quite how a 3d application should work. It is common for a 3d application to remain running when you tab to another window, even if at a minimum the application cannot show it's drawing surface while not in full screen. It has been common functionality since at least when quake came out in the mid 1990s. It's my belief this is why a number of players quietly utilize the 3rd party windower program even if they do not wish to cheat. According to it's information page, it performs this function properly.

FFXI and FFXIV cannot switch out of full-screen mode, it was staggering XIV came out like this. SE have never shown the slightest interest in making it work, hence the well-known third-party tool you allude to gained far more users than it otherwise would have done.
