View Full Version : Should Jug pets really have a duration?

Just seems off to me. All other pets have an infinite duration until killed or in SMN's case no mp. But yet, BST, all pretty much have around a 2 hour duration, when these things actually cost us money to even use. I'm fairly new to the game so maybe I'm just crazy, but these things even disappear upon zoning or logging, so I just don't understand any reason to give these a duration...

That's a tree that people have been barking up for a while. Hopefully SE will give us some kind of fix for that. I remember a thread popping up with good ideas about a static general pet that we could just summon up without having to use a jug.

This usually isn't a problem... I mean how long are you really in 1 zone w/ the same pet.... ?

except just the other day this was a problem for me. I was killing Iku-turso in abyssea - vunkerl farming seals and my pet despawned mid fight. I was bewildered and it took me a few minutes to figure out why it disappeared. There was no way he could have been killed... but it turned out I had been at it for a long time and simply wasn't paying attention to how long...

I really don't get it that they expire. it doesn't really make sense.

You know the answer to this question already. It's completely variable, but it's possible to stay in a zone for days on end if you're camping an NM or farming materials, doing trials etc. We have to spend gil to make gil, that's true for all jobs, but BST have an added expenditure in the form of our pet timer. Auto-despawns make farming with Yuly an exercise in gambling, because even with TH there's no guarantee you're going to make enough gil in the time you popped the pet and used it. This narrows down choices with Yuly, I don't want to use her unless I really need her or know that I can make back enough for spawning her to be worth it.

If jug timers were removed we would be able to keep a pet around long enough to be sure we get our gils' worth out of it before it randomly disappears in the middle of an NM fight and completely screws us. Alternatively, if the devs feel that removing the timer is unbalancing a visible duration timer for pets would be great. So when I try to fight something with my pet I can be sure it won't despawn and cause the NM to tear my face off.

FYI it does not randomly despawn, it has a 2 hour limit. Just make a mental note of when you popped it and this should never be a problem.

I'm aware of the 2 hour limit, I only used "randomly" to make an exaggeration about having bad luck. Making a mental note that you take everything written literally for later use.

I don't like the duration timer either. However I would much rather be able to change zones with my pet.

It is pretty clear by your post you are aware of the duration. I was only pointing out the fact in the case some donkey comes on to these forums knowing nothing about bst and thinking "omg jug pets randomly despawn. bst have it so bad blah blah blah..." I'm certainly not opposed to a visible timer. It would not be game breaking. As far as zoning pets... we have been barking up that tree for years sadly.

BST is the only job that has to dump gil into/use items to summon a pet. for that reason, despawn timer should be removed and we should also be able to zone with jug pet just like smn, pup and drg can do with their pets. zoning with a jug pet into a non-level capped area should not be an issue to allow, right?

I think this is only a concern because charm is so useless at high levels and end game. Actually w/ recetn changes to zone monster allocation, we have more high level opportunities to charm. however, in events, charm is still useless.
