New player looking for advice

I am looking for a little advice as to what job/subjob would be suitable for group and solo play.

I am currently torn between wanting to be a BLM/RDM or a SAM/MNK. I know i need to unlock Samurai once I hit 30.

Which of those two combo's would be best suited for group and solo play and difficulty on learning them to play effectively.

I would recommend Black Mage/Red Mage for a true-blue starting player, because it can be such a strong job solo as well as in parties. Most melee jobs have issues when they find themselves without a healer, and that might be an issue you'd run into often as a new player.

Black Mage also happens to be a highly desired job for most things these days. It's good for many of the missions and quests that you'll probably want to do as a new player, too, so that would work out.

Since Black Mage is a single-purpose job compared to many mages, it wouldn't be too hard to learn. Just kill stuff and sleep stuff, to be really brief. The difficulty of learning to play Black Mage tolerably is really low. Depending on how awesome you want to be, the sky is pretty much the limit for the effort you can put into a mage job.

I do have some trouble explaining stuff in a way that someone new to FFXI can make sense out of, so I hope this has been helpful in spite of that.

Just make sure you have a THF friend once you get to the point of needing Ancient Magic if you find yourself unwilling to pay for them at the AH. Otherwise best of luck! ^^b

If you are still in the market for a linkshell then shoot Alcilly a /tell. FantasyFirst is working on gathering new/returning/old players to benefit from having a number of people in the lower level range.
