Pretty much name ONE thing in ffxi that maade you cry tears of joy, for real.
The one time I cried tears of joy when I beat maat after 30 tried as rdm and 5 tries as mnk. I thouhgt I was never gonna beat time because back then I sucked at soloing.

I did that when i first got the pre change mee deggi drop 5 min before a maintenance on a day i was sick with bronchitis of some kind. Pretty much 100+ fever and breathing difficulty. THat made my day.

I've never cried tears of joy from this game, but the one time I was so excited that I couldn't sleep and couldn't stop shaking the entire day was when I got my YinYang Robe. The next day was also equally exciting because my friend got hers as well.

Beating Chains of Promathia.
Same - it was a long and grueling battle, and we went through so many setup changes over the months it wasn't funny. I ended up tanking promy on my warrior since our paladin ate dirt. It was a pretty epic and fun fight, and I have never experienced anything like it since.

Never cried, but there was a lot of fist pumping and AWH YEAH!s when I soloed Titan first try in the mini fork trial. My highest job was WHM 30 at the time, and he was the first big thing I fought in game. It started a life long love affair with going out to p*ss off random NMs to see if I can solo lol

When my static and I managed to get out of The garden of Ruhmet (sp?) after completing its mission for CoP way before the nerf. :) I didn't literally cry of joy... but after about 6-8h (if I recall correctly) inside, I was close to it.
But it was fun afterall.

I don't think the newer RDM's realize how much of a pain in the butt he was back in the olden days. I went up against him around the time CoP was released, BEFORE it had an ending. So nuts to you all newbie RDM's. We're hardcore! XD
The day that I defeated Maat I wasn't crying, but I was laughing hysterically since I went in on a whim. After at least a dozen failed attempts, I did it by doing none of the "conventional" RDM strategies.
But for me, the moment that "would" have brought a tear to my eyes from pure joy, though I haven't cried at anything in a game or movie, ever, is when I got my RDM Relic Hat from Dynamis-Xarcabard on my very first trip there. I had access to Xarc for well over a year, but we could never get enough people to go in. Again kids, this is way back in the olden days before the current version of the game. This was around the time ToAU came out.
Anyway, the linkshell I was in finally had enough people to tackle Xarc. My first time in, blasting the zone's music. And within the first half hour, we got a relic drop. Duelist's Chapeau. Lots were called by the leader and I was on the list. I let everyone else lot first and tabbed to the "Lot" button. I closed my eyes and touched the enter key. And then I couldn't look for another 2 minutes or so because I was afraid I was going to have the best RDM Lot ever - 0. And while I did have a RDM Lot (431 to be exact), I won! I could not believe that I won the hat! On my first Xarcabard run! I still wear that hat to this day and I'm NEVER giving it up!

I did RDM Maat in the era you guys were talking about (pre-nerf) and went 1/2. I'd have gone 1/1, but I didn't bring any meds or food because I kept listening to people who told me RDM Maat was FFXI's reincarnation of Mr. T and thought I needed a dry run. Iirc, I ran in and slept him, dispelled him/buffed myself, (silenced him?), Gravity, nuke a few times, Sleep, rest, Chainspell and kill (Stoneskin/blink, convert, cures, meds, etc). It was substantially easier than doing something like soloing the Brothers ENM on RDM.
I've never wept from FFXI, but I had a really good week at one point where I finished four Salvage pieces, got Novio/Gaiters/Ixion Cape (back when Ixion was new), got an E.body, got and upgraded BLM AF2 hands -1, and made over 10 million gil reselling stuff. I'm pretty sure that's going to go down in my FFXI history as my luckiest week.

Maat Asuran'd me for 0 damage. There was an element of luck to RDM Maat if your gear wasn't good or your skills weren't capped (basically, if you got resists), but he wasn't the god slayer that you guys make him out to be. I was using a variety of compromise pieces at the time (like Spider Torque and only Wind/Dark HQ staves) and still beat him easily.

Maat was ninja nerfed some time after CoP came out. Plus you guys had access to better gear and elemental staff prices dropped a lot.
When I beat Maat on RDM (before CoP, you damn whippersnappers), NQ elemental staves were around a million gil each and most of the gear under level 70 was terrible. The only earring with MND on it back then was the Communion Earring and that was another small fortune to buy. Magic Accuracy didn't even exist back then. We had to walk Waughroon Shrine in 5 feet of snow, uphill both ways! You kids today don't know how lucky you are now! Why, when I was a young Red Mage we had to go in alliances to get Genkai items and coffer keys! We didn't have no fancy "Colibri Parties" or "Abyssea" or "Book Burns", we had to make out XP with skillchains and we maxed out at 5 XP per hour!
Anyway, I think my single happiest moment I have had in FFXI was when I got my Ridill, Sweetness. Sweetness and I have had so much fun together over the years.

They nerfed RDM Maat quite a while after I did, and inflated prices were not just on staves. I used to sell Mannequin Bodies and Hands for 1.5mil. 20 seals -> 1 body -> 1 HQ it staff. In general, people had trouble with it because they were not used to doing anything other than casting Refresh, Haste, and Cure on their RDMs.

I probably was happiest around level 62 or so, when I stayed up to 6 AM to get carby mitts, and tank left at start of fight because he got upset and we had to rely on a group of poorly coordinate leftovers. Needless to say my pop was the last one we did, since we had no tank left.
I'd have been moderately upset if I had stayed up to 6 AM and didn't get the mitts though.

Back in the day, RDMs had the time to cap everything because parties were so slow, we were even expected to magic burst back then.
And thanks to a certain terrible PLD that used to be on Bahamut, I also had capped evasion! (This guy was responsible for a generation of mages beating Maat.)

I did not have a "cry for joy" moment but i did have a omgwtfbbq moment after 5 months of camping King Arthro day in and day out, waking up at 3am and sleeping between every window. I claimed many of times to no avail. till one day right before namis was going to start. I had lost ToD over the course of that week but i just happened to check zone and seen the regulars mounting up. So i op'ed out to Ronfaure hopped on my bird and rode out. long story short, I solo claimed and couple of the regulars dropped party and joined with me to help kill it. Finally, after all that time V. belt dropped... it was finally mine, I finally seen that name pop up in my log window and I was so elated. Really words can not describe how I felt. It was mine. All mine. I did not pay for it I worked for it and that made the taste even sweeter. Sadly its not the best anymore and I have moved on to my twilight but back then it was the belt to have. lets not count ninurtas cause lets face it, ppl that killed AV were few and far between back then. Big ups to Foxx. It was your Th that prevailed in the end. To Gradius, my jp friend who i sat with staring out over the lake for months on end. Mitos and Cocotaru, some other jp's that helped me after I claimed on several occasions and to all of MonstersInc for your constant support in my obsession lol. R.I.P. Ramuh! The place where I was born and raised, you will be forever missed. ^^

Maat's cap CS, earned from 6/6 Exp parties, in years of learning how to play every job in the game. Where parties had pullers, healers and tanks, not 15ppl trading in gil to stand by a conflux and warp after a couple hours to go figure out how their new 90 works. R.I.P Ramuh server, and traditional exp parties~

I've never shed tears (of joy!) in this game, but for me I was really happy when:
a.) I beat ACP when it first came out and got me a cheap Hauby body for DRG;

c.) I finally, FINALLY GOT THAT PEACOCK AMULET FROM ARGUS
oh yeah, and getting Hagun too. That was pretty awesome.

If I had any tears left... it would be for obtaining the Spelunker's Hat (http://ffxi.gamerescape.com/wiki/Spelunker's_Hat) from the Taisajin (http://ffxi.gamerescape.com/wiki/Taisaijin) after around 40-60 defeats spanning over a year, abouts.

Probably the times I've shed tears of joy for FFXI was when I beat CoP RIGHT before the first nerf. Watching the final CoP CS had me convulsing and crying. Getting my first 75. Beating RDM Maat(my first limit break fight). Finally obtaining my Bahamut's staff(after 2 years of trying to obtain it.). Getting full SMN Relic, the night I finally got my Summoner's Horn. Beating the entire storyline of CoP/RoZ together in Apocalypse Nigh. Finishing up to at least lvl 85 on my Hvergelmir. Unlocking and falling in love with BLU from lvls 1-95. Finding out guys could be DNC's because all they would advertise before WotG release was girls in DNC AF and demoing females fighting in the field. I've had a lot of very special moments with long time friends long gone. FFXI was and still can be an emotional break out for me. I slightly miss it, and yet I hardly remember it. So goes the bad times, and so come the good times.

Sure there is a small element of luck, but 30 times is, yeah...Had HQ stalves, top gear and capped skill. Never beat him. It's ratehr impossible when Maat, as a rdm, will triple WS you with only 100TP. Yes, that's WS 3 times in succession ala meikyo shisui. He would do this every time with out fail.

When I finished Wings of the Goddess missions. Why WoG? Because it was my last set of story missions and I realized I'd never have to sit through another enormous boring CS in this game again. Incredible joy there.
Other than that, RDM Maat victory here too. Uber fail on attempt 1. Attempt 2 he was at 50% and sleeping and I had just converted and used chainspell. Then I DISCONNECTED. I quit for a month, then beat him on my first try the first day back. It was more relief than joy though really.
