View Full Version : DRK What we can actually do with it.

All rightly then.

There is alot of DRK-sux and DRK can't do crap buuut honestly imo I think DRK is a solid job inside and outside abyssea.

I'm going to skip the tp burn/exp thing cause honestly thats so easy now it's not worth worring about as long as ur not afk or leeching ur like 3 steps above most pple anyway lol.

My role as DRK inside abyssea....
I have played DRK well in low-man and all out 18 pple linkshell events and tbh even tho i have WHM SCH SMN COR ... DRK is my most useful job because i have put the effort in (unless we have NO WHMs then ofc my WHM is better lol)

What i do as DRK ... as DRK/MNK i fall into 3 area DD, Red staggerer and main tank.

DD wise it's pretty simple cap haste ect ect it's DRK main role.

Red stagging ... you need to be able to cover all the staggers DRK can on Red !!.

Tanking ... ok this imo is what has made up for my DRKs lack of DD in abyssea vs say a WAR and it's not to say a WAR can't do the same but it's taking DRK 1 extra step and allowing it to be useful. Well i should say it's taking the player one extra step and allowing them to be an asset regardless of job.

More about tanking
I'll explain more about tanking since it's not that heard of.

DRK/MNK geared correctly can Tank alot of mobs in abyssea for example with just a DRK + WHM setup well u can duo all of the caladborg NMs with some difficulty but once u work out stun timing and stuff it's pretty easy.

How it works ... with alot of HP and counter reducing DMG taken but at least 50-70% from melee and also reflecting DMG back at the mob it basically acts as a DMG mirror reflecting DMG back at the mob until it's dead using it's large hp to stay alive (i have usally between 3.6-4.2k hp) not to mention last resort and haste speeds stuff up as well ^^

Atmas

Razed Ruins - This is just for DDing
S.Scythe -This helps DD but the HP + is a huge boost to survivabilty and teh enmity isn't bad either if ya duoing.
Last atma varies for sitiuation
DD - VV
Tanking - Gnarled horn i even tend more towards gnarled horn cause the crit rate is nice with the counter+

Prereqs

Abyssites u need for the HP buffing abyssites at least outside that the curor buffing ones are nice too.

Gear.

DD gear is nice if ya can use it but i have used more survivable gear and when it comes down to surviving u need dmg taken -% gear since counterstance will basically 0 your defense.

In my top surivial setup i have
Main - -12% Phyisical DMG Trail scythe
Sub - -2% Physical eisen grip.
Body - Versa Hauberk -3% physical
Neck - Twlight torque (-5% dmg take """this is a very useful never take off peice)
Belt - The -3% DMG piece (nice for magic heavy mobs)
Legs the -2% DMG peice
Feet Askar (another -2% dmg peice)
Rings - i use bomb Q and the 90 hp ring or mermans for magical dmg (iseally u could have some nice augmented dark rings here instead)
Back - 95 hp one or Shadow mantle.

With above setup it takes along time for me to die and as long as i have hate counters will eventually kill anything... if i can i will use as much DD gear as possible starting with Caladborg but if my WHM is low or struglling i use all of the above to help out.

Basically with the above setup I have been able to use my DRK for low maning stuff from seals, af+2 items and some of my empyrean (Kizunas my ls helped with more than i did duo but it can be done)

Outside that in high man situations my ls have been able to use me DRK and a WHM to go off and kill NMs seperatly for people which allows my ls to do multiple things at once (or +1 thing with just 2 pple).

Ofc this is all inside abyssea stuff so far and i'll leave there (cause there is so much text and thx for reading cause i know my typing sux :X ) and hope other will come forward and express how they can use DRK positively.

If anyone wants to know the DRK duo strats on any of the caladborg NM just say.

also inb4 Job X can do all this ... it isn't about that it's about taking DRK to it's full potential and tbh in my linkshell anyone that goes all out on a job is extremely useful regardless of what it is ... expect maybe PUP but i've never seen a dedicated PUP so let just leave it there.

DRK/MNK is fun! You get to Chi Blast out of your weapon! lol

Though it is overlooked, DRK has always had the potential to be a good tank. The damage output and hate-generating abilities make it quite easy to hold hate, you just have to get around the squishyness of the job (as Rezeak has explained here)

I see it this way mostly: Inside Abyssea you will probably tank as /mnk (except on stuff like Karkadann and Iron Giants) due to the extreme counter rate from certain atmas+Counterstance, as well as the high HP. Outside, you are probably better off as /NIN or not tanking at all XD

That being said, I tanked a lot of the Nyzul bosses, Salvage stuff, as well as the MMM bosses (75-80 cap) as DRK/NIN with little problems.

tanking is exactly why I picked to play DRK!

I picked DRK for the great Damge Dealing capabilities and the ability to help turn the tide of battle with unique dark magic spells, with reasonable payoffs.

OH WAI-

I'll be totally honest. I picked drk for the relic back when cata was completely broken, and i'm too stubborn to let go of it.

Its still amazing, I'll have mine soon.

I can't wait to Tank and actually have survivability.

I picked DRK so I can deal high melee damage and be able to throw out spells when I needed to in order to help me and my team.

Too bad the magic side of the job wasn't what I expected. :c

Inside Abyssea you will probably tank as /mnk (except on stuff like Karkadann and Iron Giants)

Just easily duo the Iron giant in abyssea atlep DRK/SAM and Proced yellow with aspir = yummy ^^

Used winged gloom with my DMG- gear which made it's Ballistic kick leave me with 1k+ hp (instead of the usual 1)

Hey, I've been tanking lots of stuff on DRK/MNK as well for awhile now. Can you give some details on duoing Carabosse? I'm not positive but I thought she has a dispel move, or casts it. Usually if an NM can dispel, /mnk tanking is usually not the best option, so yea would like some info on that. I completed 85 Redemption, and now working on Caladbolg so your info is greatly appreciated.

Any job/NIN+WHM can take Cara pretty easily. Have a decent MDT set, keep shell up and wack away.

DRK/SAM

Greatest thing ever.

It would be the greatest thing ever if they ever removed the stupid increase in spellcasting time.

/Sam has served me well tanking in the past so... Forgive my ignorance but, why /mnk? I'm looking at Wiki because i'm no monk, but all i can see is i suppose a decent Chakra, (Even better boost from Abyssea Vit), like 60 HP increase and 10% counter rate. If you could elaborate for me plz =/. Just looking to expand my horizons if i'm missing out on a potential sub.

counterstance + gnarled horn = nuff said

plus the extra hp+ lets you survive any spells that may get off (which they shouldn't unless you suck at stunning)

I tank t3 khim as war/mnk or drk/mnk 100% of the time and as long as stunner's don't suck my whm hardly has to cure me at all

Tanking as a dark knight is possible, but silly in my opinion. Your job is to use your dark power to annihilate the enemy, striking down any and all foes.

Dart

every dd job is a tank, you just have to do enough damage to maximize enmity. so its not that silly

Countering for 700-900 DMG is annihilating the Enemy imo :)

I feel like a broken record but DRK was a premier tank at 75 and has only gained tools to help it tank now. The RDM tanking nerf hurt DRK tanking a bit but its still a very good hate holding job.
