Take a look at this video. It's quite humorous, but you get the point. Features like music, manga, in-game strategy guides. Where did all that go?

Because POL never really took off as a "network." Granted, it worked fairly well in japan, but at the time, they didn't think a lot of that other stuff would do well here. Also, not everyone in japan had PCs, so that's why that stuff was available on POL and not just on their website. Around here, PCs are much more ubiquitous so we can just use their website.

... the shit? What the hell, that was ever part of the plan? Production value looks suspiciously low even for late-90s TV, but suspiciously high to be fan-made. The interface looks similar to .hack, and otherwise it's all just clips from their games spliced together.
Yep. The gaming companies often have big dreams for their products but usually things never pan out because the customer base just isn't ready for whatever they envision. Such is life with entertainment products. People always envision things 20 years too soon, trying to make that killer buck on some great game changing idea that millions will flock to regardless of price.

I love how the Brit guy was the biggest opera queen on film.

Sounds like Final Fantasy 7. It is about the right time now to make it, since they've learned how to make good 3D models. Back when 7 came, it was so disappointing with cube fantasy. At least the story (while confusing) made the game possible to enjoy.

Thats what held me back from 7. I'm sure the story was good, but I could hardly play it for 5 minutes beause my Tandy 1000 computer was capable of more advanced 3D graphics (Not a joke, I have some polygonal 3D games that ran on that thing and they looked nicer) and the game was making my eyes bleed.
When FFXIII came around, they improved the graphics by a lot.

You could, you know, play it on the original PS1 (or PS2 if you don't have a PS1) and enjoy it there.

Originally in the FFXI beta when you changed jobs it would zone you back to the character creation screen where you could view a high detail model of your character. They removed this because people complained that changing jobs took too long. The models are still in the game as part of the character creation screen, but they only have the staring gear now. Supposedly you could look at all of your character's equipment originally.
