I just finally finished the update for this game, having only got it today, and I started it up and realized that I have absolutely no idea what to do. Is there anyone who can help show me the ropes? I am in desperate need.

I can't help with a lot but i can explain some basics.

1) Start leveling up! Save your Crystals and Put them on the Auction house.

2) Don't toss beastmen seals

3) The Auction house is in Bastok Markets (if you're from bastok)

4) Use the NPC for low level armor, Check the shops in Bastok Markets near the exit

5) The guards with the names "I.M" Give an effect called "Signet", Keep it on, Always! It gives you a lot of neat bonuses including Conquest points that you can use to buy some decent armor early on. These guards are generally located right next to any zone in bastok that leads outside

6) ffxiclopedia.org < its a nice place to find some info

7) Any further questions I might be able to answer in game, I'm afk a lot though..

Follow this guide to complete the tutorial quests.

These quests will bring you to at least level 10 I believe.

Also figure out how to leverage this system:

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Fields_of_valor

They are like mini quests that give you exp.

Do fields of valor pages until level 15...then head to:

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Gusgen_Mines

Put your party flag up and try to find an alliance that is doing pages.

This will help you get a {Magicked Skull} which you need to complete this quest:

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Elder_Memories

Completing this quest will allow you to elect a support job. This will provide a significant boost to your character's abilities.

You might want to try posting here for contacts to join a Linkshell group:

Well the only reason I got this game was to have fun and play alongside other actual people since I have never played an online game before. But it seems as if that is near impossible. I dislike solo player so I don't think I will be playing this.

This game isn't a solo game, it revolves around playing with other people.

Initially you may have to solo to about level 10~20, but after that you'll be in parties. Try to find a linkshell or a group of people. When someone runs by, strike up a conversation, explain you're new. /sh in cities or out on the battlefield for a linkshell/party.

Only the absolute most early part of the game is really where you solo, even then you can still team up, me and my friend duo jobs all the time.

All Endgame events, Even mid-game like BCNM20/30/40, Experience parties, etc are all multiple people. Find a good Social Linkshell, Its basically a social gathering of people to talk to and help you out.

I'm pretty sure every MMO is "Solo" at low levels to basically teach you the feel of the game before you join other people. Being our first MMO, I just thought I'd let you know its no different anywhere else. But thats only for the first few levels, people generally LFG around level 9~10, which at best will take you an hour or so to reach.

like the last couple people said, this is definitely not a solo game. try not to get the wrong idea XD low levels are BEST to be done solo and pass by very fast, though you have total freedom to do it with others. just look for a LS with decent people and that will help set everything into motion for you

Your worries will be over at level 10.

At level 10, anyone can make their level the same as yours. You can party together this way. This is called "level sync."

Just stick it out till then, good luck!

Thanks guys, I am now at level 9 but having trouble finding monsters who give more than 100 exp that I can actually beat. But anyway just to clarify I am on the Asura Server in case I didn't mention it. Also, how do you find a Linkshell? I have been looking but with no luck.

haha just go into town and ask people via /shout. not sure if anyone explained exactly what they are. A linkshell is an item that you equip (not via equipment but through the linkshell screen) and it just lets you chat with anyone else wearing it too, which is how people form long term groups in the game to do things together. so just head into town ask shout saying, your a new player looking for a social linkshell for people to do stuff with. and there are plenty of more places to get better exp but also just spam killing lower exp mobs can be just as fast or even faster, just try to explore everywhere, or ask around in game.

Try using this to determine where to go to find mobs appropriate to your level:

http://campsitarus.blogspot.com/

p.s.: you can't just jump in and play this game, it requires much much reading on numerous sites and forums.

you can jump in and just start playing... but it requires a level of patience if you do it that way. i played my first couple years by just finding my way through things and asking friends i met in game, though back then there were a LOT more low level/new people around. so yea if you wanna get the most outta the game, do what Gropitou said and read in to stuff, but if it suits you better you can play on the fly and figure everything out. If you do it that way though keep in mind, there is always more to do than you think, don't give up on something with out knowing whether or not there is more to it or a way around it. known a lot of people that get and quit this game simply cause they say "well i cant do this, it doesn't have this" even though it did, it just didn't jump out and tell them XD

Maybe all the new or low level players should band together. It makes a lot more sense than trying to get the older players to join us. Maybe we should all pick a server and join up. That is really the only thing that I can think of. I will gladly pay an extra buck to play online with other people. So let's all agree on a server and play there.

Try too avoid aggro mobs like goblins, rams, orcs, quadavs, links as well there is some mobs that will link if not careful
Try too join a linkshell if possbile and hope they are helpful bunch of people!
GO you!
