Why is there still no private messaging system on this forum?

It's 2011, get with the program. Forums have private messaging systems.

It's not "that kind" of forum.

You mean one created after the 90s?

Private Messaging systems are pretty basic functionality and come standard everywhere for good reason.

It wouldn't even be difficult seeing as how this forum is built on top of vBulletin.

You realize that doesn't really change anything, right?

You realize that doesn't really change anything, right? So you're saying that SE needs to take up their time and resources to add a means for people to talk amongst themselves just because it's on the net and other systems let you do it regardless of what the system is meant for to begin with?

Yes.

Superfluous+1text lolol :)

EDIT: But if they added PMs to the forums, how would you raise your post count with three letter and/or off topic posts :'(

Yes.

Pretty much.

We don't have any plans to implement a private messaging feature on the forum.

That's pretty discouraging and says a lot about the people in charge. None of it positive.

It says plenty about the people in charge and all of it is positive. Being in the position they're in, they can't allow PMs because they won't be able to moderate them and it thus creates an avenue for people to abuse eachother undetected.

You cannot expect all the same freedoms on an official forum from a game company as you get on a private forum.

If you want to PM, do it on a fan forum. It's unnecessary here and the potential for abuse is high, much higher than on a smaller forum.

Ya the forums main objective is to serve as a hub for player input If you would like to PM there are a bunch of others forums that allow it so if you are that focused on getting to PM others perhaps instead of PMing what if they allowed an option on the forums to send a "friend" request that could tie into the playonline friendlist so you could at least PM that way and get other info if you'd like.

This is all you can reply to today with all the bustling threads we have? Why don't you guys post as often as the XIV people. :\

Technically, Private Messaging system comes with all forums software, but it's whether they choose to USE it or not. In this case, they chose not to use it. Which makes sense for this kind of forums. So no it's not gonna take any resource. PErsonally I'd rather them NOT turn it on. WE all know everyone is going to abuse the crap out of it.

XIV is in development, XI is not. I also see similar reps posting on both forums so they both post just as much, there's the possibility they just....don't have much to say yet?

<--supports this

If PM's were implemented, the poor moogles would be bombarded with either fan mail or hate mail depending on the content of their posts. Besides, if ya don't like a particular person's post then click the triangle on the bottom left corner of said post...it's that easy.

Really, if you want to PM someone you can just look up their character on POL and send a friend request. Why you feel the need to add more junk to check the inboxes for is beyond me.

Hint: Private messaging comes standard on forum software.

It isn't "not added". It's disabled.

And that's perfectly fine for this forum.

Eh, not much of a loss honestly. I'd have liked to have it when the forums opened, but not so much anymore.

This forum originally had potential to be a place where people held discussions. Now it's just a place where people whine to each other about how much better SE should make their jobs, even though most of them don't even put in a few minutes to honestly think about their jobs' weaknesses and strengths.

Especially with the kind of discussion that tends to happen here, I dont see PM being used for anything other than flaming people where the mods can't see/can't be bothered to moderate.

(On most forum software I've used, PMs cannot be read through by staff, they're truly private. Only someone with direct access to the server with the forum database can access that data.)

Thank goodness and thank you Camate. A PM function would just lead to player and DEV/MOD harassment. You can use the PM function on a person's profile on FFXIAH if you really need to.

I love how even though you edited this and added more than enough characters, you kept in the superflous text. I like your style.

On topic PMs are unnecessary, and would be very likely open to abuse.

That's just how I roll.

But in all seriousness, some people are in need of some abuse, they don't realise how stupid/stuckup/arrogant/elitist POS's they really are. If I wanted to abide by the forum rules, and tell this person what I think of them, i'd have to take it to pm or risk the chance of getting an unjust slap on the wrist from the lolmods.

Frankly, there is no need to abuse anyone for any reason. The fact that you can hide behind a made up character and behave like an asshat just because you can and get away with it doesn't mean that you should. We are all guilty of it at some point. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but it would be SO refreshing to see people NOT call others stupid/arrogant/stuckup/idiots/retards/morons/elitists and worse. I would imagine though that this is how many behave in real life because let's face it, the world owes them, just as Van a'diel owes them.

I'm not sure where all the "Oogity-boogity PMs are used for Harassment" stuff is coming from. I could pull up literally all of my PMs on FFXIAH and BG and not i can only think of 1 that is negative, Which in itself turned into a positive (what with him seeing the error of his ways).

I don't think I've seen PMs on websites abused like some of you are describing, I'm not naive to think it doesn't happen, but i certainly don't think its as vehemently rampant as you all make it out to be.

The other day i had a perfect use for a PM, i wanted to tell Kingfury something, Instead i had to Bump one of his old threads. Its not a big deal, But thats when it would come in handy. Simple solution? Allow Mods/etc to view PMs. That way they could be moderated. No idea if thats possible but i don't see why not.

I'm not upset we won't get PMs, my only comment is that all this "THANK GOD THEY'RE ONLY GOOD FOR HARASSMENT" Bull is out of hand.

but then again, Maybe people who act like a turd and flat out argue with logic on every occasion do get these kinds of PMs. It Might explain the vehement fear behind the thought of an addition like this from people here.

PMs aren't needed. We can make off-topic threads and posts calling each other out instead. Considering that is how SE wants us to act. If they wanted us to take it to PMs, the system would exist.

PMs are usefull when you want to ask a particular poster some details without poluting or derailing the thread.

For instance, one person claimed that he could solo Dragua with Harlequin automaton, but wouldn't divulge how because he considered it 'his' secret. Now, he was most likely talking out of his posterior, or at best pre-buratinomore, but in case there was truth behind his words, some PUPs would like to know the 'secret'.
