Pretty much what the title says. Was at level 90 with 1 TNL before dying. Home pointed and ended up at level 89 with still 1 TNL.

My initial thoughts: you have your experience gain set to Limit Points Gain, and looked at limit points instead of experience points.
Limit points cap at 20/9999, and any additional limit points gained will NOT be shunted into experience. Unlike experience, where AFTER you reach the cap (be it 75,80,85 or 90), excess experience points are shunted into limit points.
Experience points are not split, I believe, so if you are below the cap, any exp gained that puts you over the cap is lost. Next time you earn experience, it's switched to limit points automatically.
So, never use the manual switch to limit points, unless you need merit points more then experience points.
