View Full Version : Why are you a Dragoon?

Open ended as Final Fantasy XI's job system is, I understand that one character isn't strictly any one or two classes, but I'm sure many players have a class they favor more than others.
I like pet classes in MMO's, usually, and the idea of a heavily armored lancer fighting alongside a versatile dragon was too appealing to me to pass up. Why do you favor the dragoon?

When I first started I didn't know what job I was going to main... but on the first day while I was running around killing stuff in South Gustaberg, a player ran by me with a little blue wyvern following him and I decided to be a Dragoon.
I always liked Dragoons since the awesomeness of Kain in 4. The fun of using Jump in all of the Final Fantasies that had the command. And only Dragoon can pull off purple.

Personally I don't really "get" why people decided to play DRG based on previous DRG characters in other FF games. Kain and Cid to me weren't that great.. I could be missing something, but I felt that Freya was more memorable.
Why I leveled DRG is purely a tribute to lost friends. When ever a friend leaves the game, I make it a mission for me to keep their memory alive by leveling the job they treasured the most. I've done it for THF, RDM, SAM, BRD, next up I think is WHM.
Junyi is the player that inspired me to level DRG. He stuck by the job through thick and thin showing non-believers that DRG could parse up there with all the extremely well geared DD. Unfortunately he never got to see it shine in Abyssea.

The armor looked cool, and I liked the idea of a little adventuring buddy by my side through anything with the only time limit being a recall timer. Bst was all well and good but the threat of the mob coming to it's senses and eating you was a turn off. The honor of the dragoon is that they will do anything and everything to protect those around them, even at the cost of their own life, they will even die to protect their wyvern, and the wyvern will die to protect the dragoon. I just wyvern appearance could have changed as we lvl'd the job. Changing colors or taking on a smaller version of the wyverns we see roam the wild.

I always played mage jobs in every game, so i really wanted to do something different, by the time i started to play FFXI, everyone called DRG the loljob (loldrg), then i just took it up as a challenge to get something different and try to change taht image of the job, i must admit i hadn't any idea of DD when i became one, but once i started i just got amused by DRG potential and abilities that i'll never change my favorite job once again (DRG FTW!), we are loljob no more, and i think we are one of the stronger jobs in the game if played properly, and the wyvern, damn it looks so cool beside you!

Now it could be as easy as saying my favorite creature are dragons, and my favorite color is blue, but then I love to tell my FFXI stories.
I remember my first days I logged into Final Fantasy XI. I was in Zeruhn Mines doing the first Bastok Mission. I was completely stunned when I saw another character in the distance running around with a dragon flying behind him. I had to think for a second if that really was a dragoon. I read about it, but it didn't look interesting in the spring guide. Few days later, I was at the Auction House in Bastok Mines, and I saw another Dragoon, but this time up close and in full Artifact Armor. And back then, the armor looked awesome. So I vowed then to become a dragoon, and when I did, I enjoyed every bit of leveling it, until the 2handed and Hasso/Seigan updates were released, and it took off from there. Sure I got made fun of for being a dragoon by my linkshell. But one day my shell and I were going to zerg Kirin, and the leader had an app going to track damage. There was a SAM, me, and a DRK as the top 3. The DRK died early on due to not being able to take a hit with SoulEater on, I remember I was getting hit as well, so I Super Jumped, and the SAM had to Seigan the rest of the fight. When the leader told me I did the 2nd most damage at that run, I declared bragging rights that I was no longer an lolDRG, and should be treated like a real DD. So, I got picked on even more, but never let them forget that I can do damage and still live in a zerg on the frontlines. Since then, I've been on a 2yr break, and I'm now back reclaiming my bragging rights, starting off with being able to completely solo skillchain both light and darkness.

As an horse trainer as I am in real life, I wanted a FFXI job where I could have a companion fighting side by side with me without limits of time.
Beastmaster was going to be my pick, but I really didn't like the idea of the pet turning to attack me every now and then, or leaving after some time with jugs. Summoner wasn't quite my style, as I'm not used to stay back and watch my pet get hurt, not to mention they'd leave soon as I couldn't feed them with MP anymore. And lastly, PUP's overloading issues really left me disappointed. Wyverns don't do any of those things and are loyal fellows^^ Plus blue is my favourite color, so I couldn't resist but pick DRG as my first 75 (and now 90). DRG FTW!
I just wish more stuff was released for wyverns, not necessarily battle-related.
Like the possibility of seeing your wyvern in mog house, sleeping on the bed (sorta like your dog in Fable III), or wyvern changing color/shape based on the type (support, offensive, balanced). As a Drakengard fan I can't help but always hope for more crazy stuff to be added for wyverns.

If I could have my wyvern with me at all times, I would. But the cities don't allow pets in the city walls except Al Zahbi. It's a poop issue or some kind of congestion.

When I first started I had planned to be a SMN, however I had chosen Elvaan for my race and everything I read about the SMN job basicly said Elvaan and Galka don't make very good SMNs (an unfortunate lie I happened to believe at the time) so I decided I would go with a Damage dealing job. When I first saw the Dragoon's wyvern, I decided I wanted to play that job. I fell in love with job even more after unlocking it as the story of the job's quest was rather enjoyable for me. I played DRG for awhile and loved and then the day came when I got penta-thrust! and then ONE DAY LATER the TP nerf update happened. For awhile DRGs were considered gimp DDs and I almost gave the job up until I discovered a sort of pride in the job. It was fun for me to see a DRG, be given the "Dragoon Secret Handshake" and then continue on my way, and I play the game for fun so that was all that mattered to me. Also I thought the AF looked freakin' awesome lol. After DRG, I had of course learned much about the game and no longer held the closed-minded concept that Elvaan couldn't make good SMNs and so I leveled SMN myself, but I found I didn't hold the same love for it as I did for DRG. I've leveled other jobs and I now have DRG SMN PLD NIN BLM and MNK at 90 but DRG is the job I consider my main. It's the job I think of first when deciding what gear I want to claim or the job I want to be on when I'm completing a storyline mission (I know I'm kind of weird) and there's a strange pride about it.
I am a proud Dragoon.

I planned to be a dragoon from the start, the AF gear "looked" cool, lance, wyvern, jump attacks all appealed to me. since then I have leveled drg, had to switch accounts and lvled a new drg straight to 90. It Is my job and I dont know if i'll lvl another job to 90 just for the principle that I always want to play drg. I am the drg in my LS and i like it that way

Initially playing XI and reading the Brady Games strat guide (yes i was one of the ppl who bought it...lol) DRG caught my attention more over than any of the other jobs. DRG always amused me while I played the job while others I felt kind of unattached while EXP'ing. It was my first 75 job, and I never look back and regret leveling it or keeping it up to date with the best armor I can reasonably obtain.
I was one of the Vain ones when i decided to play DRG, I was going through the DAT files one halloween and i came across some cool looking purple armour, and found out it was the Drachen Set, seeing it was DRG i thought "Ok...I WANT that Armour" next was DRK but thats slowly moving up in levels.
As i was playing DRG, I found myself loving the job More and more, and Penta-thrust was the Deal breaker, even though we had a crappy 2hr at the time (Pre-Surge DRG here) i loved it, After i got lvl 60 and all my AF i renamed my Wyvern From "Firewing" to "Soryu" as somewhat of a celebatory promotion thing.
What kept me going was an old LS friend of mine back in Quetzy, and now, I'm a lvl 90DRG, i hear he's back in the game, but i don't have enough time to re-level my DRG on the same server (heres to hoping theres a Quetzy <-> Fairy/Sylph Merge

I was like Cruxus and even before I played, I studied up on all the jobs, and even when Call Wyvern was our 2hr, I loved the idea of fighting with the spear and a little buddy to assist, plus the AF looks awesome.
As I grew up in the game, DRG continued to work its way deeper into my heart :)

Because Altana wanted me to. I was farming moss and cuttings in ZiTah when I got a brown casket containing a rossignol. That was a sign from Altana that I should level DRG.

I guess i play dragoon when i want a risk thrill. All my other jobs (mnk thf Rdm) and my main job (bst) have vast defensive capabilities. Add in being a galka and sometimes it can get boring and feel like "this NM could not kill me if i went afk"
Dragoon has stuff to keep itself alive but it just cant take dmg. Makes things faster paced. feels like i could die. It doesnt matter if its a tiny little bunny when im on dragoon i get hit so hard. My Hp just dissapears. A properly timed super jump or healing breath becomes so much more rewarding when you know if u hadnt done it right you would be dead.
To sum up i like drg because it can do massive amounts of damage constantly and then cant handle the damage when it gets the monsters attention so i have to pay attention and be tricky to live wich keeps it interesting.
P.S. I also enjoy using super jump to kill mages who have bad attitudes. (noooow you have the hate teeehhheee!)

Way back in the day when I was a wee nooblet in the dunes, I was approached by some level 60 or so character who blindly initiated a trade with me. He gave me a Holy Lance and told me that he was quitting the game, and wanted to do something nice for someone. I decided to level DRG just to make use of the lance, and ended up falling in love with the job in the process.
I gave that same lance (the SAME lance, didn't sell and repurchase) to a friend of mine who had just finished the DRG quest much later on.

An interesting question. Mostly, because it's what I decided to start with. I had a few ideas at first, and even had my mind set on Paladin, but I then decided to start off with a damage dealer job, and somehow got into Dragoon. I have to say I may have had an easier time with another damage dealer job, but I stuck by my choice and I don't regret it. Dragoon is still my favorite. Plus the new Jump attacks are pretty nice for spike damage.

I have always loved pet jobs. Well that is when I knew there were other jobs out there besides WAR,MNK,THF,WHM,BLM and RDM. I started out lvling BLM and i was like lvl 4 and a SMN came out and started skilling his magic skill and I fell in love. i stopper lvling BLM and lvled WHM for SMN sub. SMN was my first 75 and is my main. After that I took RDM,THF and COR to 75 and then I wanted to try a heavy DD. I already had DRK at 37 for RDM sub but I had ALWAYS wanted to try DRG seeing as I like pet jobs so much. I fell in love with it. Admittedly not as much as SMN but close. I love that even as a taru I have to bust my arse to not take hate off the PLD or NIN. something I never had to worry about as DRK. I stopped playing so I could go to college but now I'm back and can't wait to finnish my DRG(at 46 atm but it will prolly be my frist 90.).

I am a FF collector, I have all the games atm and have dedicated myself to playing through the games, so naturally when FFXI came out I was there saying ok lets do this. Unfortunately I didn't have a credit card so I couldn't play at the time of release but I got the game on PS2 and started reading the guides to get a good idea on what I was gonna do when I could start playing. I have created a story irl, a fantasy about a man who was a mighty spear wielder as well as the son of a human and a dragon, so as soon as I saw drg I was sold, incidently the character's nickname was Sting Ray and se made the lvl 80 trial weapon base named stingray kinda felt like an homage to me. It took me awhile to get ppl to help me unlock drg but once I did I loved it, I spent so much time building my own pt's so that I could level at a reasonable pace, but my favorite part was walkin past other drgs and getting cheers and bows and special salutes or handshakes, the drg community just stood so strong it was amazing. I used to be in several drg only ls's and just loved how united we all were. I don't spend much time on drg anymore its mainly drk blm and pup, but I still take pride in the drg job and love the direction its going in.

Why did I level DRG? To me it was more than just a job, it was multiple reasons. I could always go back to Dragoon and revisit all the memories attached to it. It started, however, with the Jump abilities with Cid from FFVII. Now I played IV and V before VII so I got to play Dragoon anyways, but Cid's 3D animations really got to me. Being able to jump over buildings and then thrust your spear onto your enemy with extreme force. That was awesome, even if Cid wasn't very strong. It was all about style. This love carried over to Freya with all her Dragoon based abilities. Not only was she decently strong, she was very stylish.
Now when FFXI came out I decided to Lv. RDM because well, it was my badass stylish job. However, once I got to level 30, I unlocked DRG and decided to start leveling that.
When the quest finished and you hatched your own wyvern, I was locked and a bond was formed between myself and my wyvern. We were attached to the hip, I never leveled a job (with the exception of abyssea) so fast just because I wanted that beautiful purple armor. When I hit 55 and Penta was unlocked, I felt like I was the best in the world. The reason I felt that was because before a certain update, you would get full TP return on your WS which meant Penta spam all day, especially with /sam.
When I was a Dragoon I felt a sense of accomplishment when I could double the amount of Weapon Skilling I did vs other Melee. I was in a constant war with Dark Knights because I would boast my power over them. To me I felt I needed to stay above and beyond the rest of the class to just show everyone that "Yes, I am great if not better than you."
With Dragoon I felt a certain honor that I needed to keep. I would defend the hell out of the job every chance I got.
I guess I kinda went into a tangent/old man rant. Regardless, I leveled my Dragoon because of the Honor, the style and the special connection you have with your wyvern. I'm not a big roleplayer but every time I switch jobs, I can't help but roleplaying a little.

Seeing it for first time in full af in the jungle leveling my highest job(25rdm) I knew it would be my first advance job. Sadly as time has gone by it fell from favor as my job I use everyday but still holds a place. Infact its the whole reason i started my current job I use most blu think that happen for many a drg. Blu like drg was a great solo job or party job(when people would invite you).

I played the PS1 game "Legend of Dragoon" and thought, "How cool would be to fight along side a dragon!?!" When FFXI came out in the states and I saw DRG as a job choice that was it for me. Even though my lil Belo is still a baby, I love having him by my side. :)
